The 2014 Rancher 420 4x4 AT with power steering uses programmed fuel injection, which puts an in-tank pump on one end of the hose and a throttle body on the other. There is no petcock, no float bowl, and no gravity feed to interrupt. Understanding the layout first turns a potentially messy repair into a tidy one.
Understanding the Fuel Path You Are About to Open
The tank sits under the seat on this platform, and the pump assembly installs through the top of it, bringing the strainer and filter element along inside the tank. That leaves one accessible section of hose: the delivery leg from the tank outlet down to the throttle body on the right side of the engine. Since the pump is electric, the only way to stop fuel is to cut power to it, which is why the removal sequence below begins with a fuse rather than a screwdriver. It is a genuine departure from the carbureted utility quads of the previous era, where a rider could reach under the tank, rotate a valve to off, and open a float bowl drain to empty the last of the fuel. Being a 4x4 with power steering, this Rancher also carries a front differential, driveshaft, and steering assist unit that a two-wheel-drive model does not, and the hose picks up an extra clearance point or two working around them.
What Goes Wrong Inside the Rubber

Cracks appear at the bends, shallow at first, then deeper. Dry regions push this along faster, because low humidity draws moisture from the outer surface.
Internally, ethanol-blended gasoline works on the liner. Alcohol carries water into the fuel and gradually attacks the inner wall, and fuel left standing during long parked stretches leaves gum and varnish behind. Because you can only see the outside, a hose can be well on its way to failing while it still looks presentable, which is the case for treating age as a legitimate reason to replace it.
Signs Worth Chasing Down
- A gasoline smell around the seat and tank, strongest in the first minutes after shutdown
- Fuel staining, a damp patch, or a puddle under the right side of the engine
- Cracking, a hardened section, or a chalky texture when you flex the hose by hand
- Dust caked in a ring at a fitting, left by fuel that has been seeping and evaporating
- Bogging under load, hesitation on throttle, or a fuel-starved feel with plenty in the tank
Because this system runs under pressure rather than gravity feed, a small breach can atomize fuel into vapor that never makes it to the floor. A persistent odor with no puddle deserves the same attention as a visible leak.
Tools, Materials, and a Word on Vapor

- A sealed metal or fuel-rated container plus a funnel
- Correct-style clamps, and a quick-connect release tool if your fitting uses a locking collar
- Line-clamping pliers to take the place of the missing petcock
- Sockets and drivers for seat and panel fasteners, a razor knife, and plenty of rags
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It sinks, spreads across the floor, and finds pilot lights, chargers, and dropped shop lamps at exactly that level. Do this outdoors when the weather allows. Indoors means the door goes all the way up and everything capable of a spark or a flame leaves the space until the job is finished and the rags are out of the building.
Removal and Installation, Step by Step
Pull the fuel pump fuse, run the engine until it stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the panel covering the tank outlet, set a catch pan under the work area, and lay a rag over the first joint you plan to open. Slide worm-gear or spring clamps back along the hose before disturbing the fitting, and release a quick-connect by depressing both tabs squarely and pulling straight rather than levering to one side. Where varnish has bonded the hose to its barb, twist it gently or slit it lengthwise and peel it off. Trace and note the routing, including every clip and the clearance points around the front driveline, before the old hose is fully out.
Cut the new hose to the same length as the piece you removed and push each end fully onto its barb until it seats. Work dry: no grease, no oil, no silicone spray, because a lubricant film on the sealing surface gives pressurized gasoline a route out from under the clamp. If the hose end is stubborn, warm water softens it enough to slide. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to snug. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used at the tank, push until it clicks and confirm with a firm pull instead of adding hardware. Return the hose to its original guides and verify clearance to the exhaust with the bars swept lock to lock.
Pressure Up, Inspect, and Wrap Up
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and loads the line, giving you a pressurized system to inspect while both fittings are still clean enough to reveal a fresh wet mark. Look with a light, wipe both joints, and look again. Then start the engine, inspect at idle, blip the throttle, and inspect a final time. Several minutes of dry running earns the bodywork going back on.
Last thing to file away: the filter on this Rancher is part of the pump module inside the tank rather than an inline element on the hose you just replaced. Fresh hose ends leaks and restores a collapsed section, but it cannot improve flow through a filter that has been catching debris for years. If fuel delivery still feels soft after a clean, dry installation, the in-tank assembly is the next place to look.
