The 2014 model year brought a comprehensive redesign to the Rancher 420, and the biggest change for anyone working on the fuel system is that this generation runs programmed fuel injection rather than a carburetor. If you have replaced a hose on an older Rancher, set those habits aside: there is no fuel valve to turn off, no float bowl to drain, and the supply line stays pressurized after shutdown because the pump sits inside the tank.

How Injection Changes the Approach

Three practical differences drive the whole procedure. First, pressure must be relieved deliberately before you separate a fitting, or the line will spray rather than drip. Second, line-clamping pliers take over the role the petcock used to play, letting you pinch off a section when needed. Third, the fitting style may be a locking quick-connect coupler instead of a clamped barb, which calls for a completely different technique to release. This particular Rancher is a 2x4 with foot shifting, so the hose run stays open and reachable, without the front differential and driveshaft hardware that 4x4 versions route around.

Why Rubber Lines Deteriorate

Fuel hose ages from the outside in and the inside out simultaneously. Externally, heat cycles from the engine drive the plasticizers out of the compound. The hose loses its flexibility, hardens, and cracks under the ordinary vibration and chassis flex that a working utility quad generates. Dry climates accelerate this measurably, since arid air keeps pulling moisture from the hose wall.

Internally, ethanol-blended gasoline is the aggressor. Left sitting in the line for a season, the alcohol draws in water and degrades the liner, leaving softened material and gum deposits that can restrict flow or travel toward the injector. That is the damage you never see coming, and it is the reason a hose that looks fine can still be the source of a running problem.

Warning Signs on an Injected Rancher

Because the line carries pressure, a small leak often produces a fine mist that evaporates before it can drip. Smell is therefore your earliest indicator.

  • A gasoline odor lingering around the tank and seat after shutdown
  • A puddle or damp streak beneath the frame after an overnight park
  • Cracking, glazing, or a chalky film along the hose
  • A dust-caked ring at a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or hard starting that comes and goes

Supplies and Ventilation

Stage everything up front: gloves and eye protection, a sealed gasoline-rated container, a drain pan, plenty of rags, replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for injection pressure, new clamps, a quick-disconnect release tool if your machine uses locking couplers, line-clamping pliers, a razor blade, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and sockets for the seat and covers.

The gasoline itself is the hazard worth respecting. Its vapor is denser than air, so it settles at floor level and moves along the ground toward pilot lights, heaters, and electrical connections. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully raised, shut down flame appliances in the building, keep an extinguisher close, cap your container immediately, and move soaked rags outside.

Relieving Pressure and Removing the Hose

Pull the fuel pump fuse first, then crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls and will not restart. Switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the panels covering the tank, trace the hose from the pump flange to the throttle body, and photograph every clip and guide before anything moves.

Slide the drain pan under the fitting you plan to open and wrap it with a rag, since residual fuel remains in the line even after a proper depressurization. Retract clamps well back along the hose first. A locking coupler releases only when both tabs are pressed squarely and the connector is drawn straight off — prying it sideways cracks plastic that has aged in the weather. If old varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, slit it lengthwise and peel it away rather than twisting hard on the fitting.

Installation and Pressure Testing

Trim the replacement to the original length. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it bottoms out, and install it completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all create a path along which pressurized fuel can creep, so keep lubricants away from every sealing surface. Hot water is the right way to soften a tight hose end. Set new clamps behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly; a self-locking quick-connect needs no clamp at all, just a firm push until it clicks and a tug to verify. Reseat the hose in its original clips so it cannot chafe on the frame or rest against the exhaust.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the circuit. Inspect both joints with a light and a dry rag while everything is cold, then start the engine, idle it a few minutes, and check again with some throttle applied. One platform note to file away: the fuel filter on this injected Rancher is part of the in-tank pump module rather than an inline unit on the visible hose, so a delivery complaint that survives a clean line swap points there next.
