Parts and Tools Worth Having Ready

Gravity Feed and a Shutoff Valve

The Slow Chemistry of Hose Failure
Hose does not wear out so much as it breaks down. Heat cycling from the engine, plus sunlight and weather, leaches the plasticizers out of the rubber and leaves the wall progressively stiffer. Once it stops flexing with the chassis, surface checking turns into cracks. Dry, low-humidity climates reach that point sooner, since arid air draws moisture out of the material continuously. Inside the hose, ethanol-blended fuel holds water against the liner and slowly degrades it, and gasoline left to oxidize leaves gum that either narrows the bore or breaks free and blocks carburetor jets. Standing fuel does more damage than fuel that gets burned, which is why a lightly used machine that sat for two seasons often needs hose first.
Symptoms You Should Not Ride Past
Look for a damp patch or small puddle under the machine after it has been parked, since a low-pressure gravity system drips visibly instead of misting the way a pressurized one does. Take a persistent gasoline smell seriously even without a visible source. Inspect closely at bends and fittings for hairline cracking, a chalky surface, or a dried ring of dirt where fuel has seeped and evaporated. Pinch the hose in several spots; anything that creaks and holds its shape has lost its elasticity. Finally, watch how the engine runs, because a restricted line shows up as bogging under load, lean surging at steady throttle, or a stumble that behaves like an empty tank with fuel still on board.
Extracting the Old Hose
Rotate the fuel valve closed, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty into your container. Remove the seat and any panel blocking the run from tank to carburetor, and slide a catch pan into position. Photograph the routing and clip locations before disturbing anything: the 4x4 driveline on this MAX carries the hose near front differential hardware and introduces frame clearance points a two-wheel-drive chassis would not have, while the two-up frame adds a little length to the path.
Slide the clamps well back along the hose rather than wrestling them at the fittings. Where varnish has bonded old rubber to a barb, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of twisting, which protects the carburetor inlet and the valve outlet from cracking. Hold a rag beneath each joint as it releases; low spots retain fuel even after a proper drain.
New Line In, Leak Check Done
Cut the replacement to match the original length so the hose neither rubs a frame tube nor tugs at its fittings when the chassis flexes. Push each end onto its barb dry, seating it completely past the raised bead, and keep grease, oil, and silicone off the fittings entirely, since lubricant stops the rubber from gripping and gives fuel a channel to creep out along. A few seconds in hot water softens a tight hose end without leaving residue. Set new clamps directly behind the bead at both ends and tighten evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the wall. If an inline filter is going in, respect its flow direction arrow and support its weight rather than letting it hang on the hose, then route everything through the original clips clear of exhaust heat and the driveline.
Seat the drain screw, open the valve, and let gravity refill the line and bowl as you watch both fittings. Wipe them dry with a clean rag and inspect a second time, since fresh seepage is obvious on clean rubber and invisible on damp rubber. Start the engine, idle it several minutes, and check again while everything is hot, then take a slow lap and give it one final look.
