Before a wrench touches anything, it pays to know exactly what kind of fuel system you are working on. The 2013 Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS is fuel injected, so the hose running from the tank forward is not a lazy gravity feed like the one on an older carbureted utility quad. A pump sits inside the tank and keeps that line under pressure whenever the key is on, and there is no petcock to twist closed. Every step below is shaped by that single design difference.
How the 2013 Grizzly Delivers Fuel
Yamaha's injected big bore single meters fuel electronically at the throttle body, which means the delivery hose must hold pressure rather than simply carry liquid downhill. Practically speaking, that rules out cheap general purpose hose, rules out reusing a stretched clamp, and makes depressurizing the circuit the mandatory first move. Some of these machines use a locking quick connect coupler at the tank outlet instead of a plain barb and clamp, so look closely at both ends before ordering parts.
The other thing worth registering early is chassis layout. This is a 4x4 with power steering, and the extra front differential and steering hardware means the hose threads through slightly tighter clearance than it would on a two wheel drive machine. Nothing about the procedure changes, but you will spend more time getting your hands into position.
The Slow Chemistry Behind Hose Failure
Hose does not simply wear out from fuel passing through it. The rubber compound gradually surrenders the plasticizers that give it flexibility, and once those are gone the wall turns hard and glassy. Heat radiating off the engine speeds that up, and the repeated flexing a Grizzly endures on washboard trails turns hardened areas into visible fissures. Riders in dry climates get there fastest, because ambient air with almost no moisture in it pulls the hose wall stiff from the surface inward.
Ethanol works from the inside. It draws water into the fuel and slowly breaks down the liner, and fuel that sits unused for a full off season leaves gum behind as the light components evaporate. That residue both restricts flow and sheds particles toward the injector. The unpleasant result is a hose that can pass a visual inspection while it is already failing internally.
Symptoms That Should Stop You From Riding
- Gasoline pooling anywhere under the machine, or a fresh wet streak running down a frame tube
- A sharp fuel smell that hangs around the seat, strongest right after you shut the engine off
- Surface crazing, hard spots, or a swollen soft area where the hose meets a fitting
- Bogging, sputtering, or a lean stumble at higher rpm that clean fuel and a fresh plug do not resolve
- Grime collected in a dark ring at either connection, which is dried fuel residue trapping dust
On an injected Grizzly a pressure side pinhole may spray a fine mist instead of dripping, so a persistent odor with a dry floor is still a genuine leak. Cycling the key to run the pump and then inspecting with a light usually reveals the source.
Setting Up a Safe Bench
Collect all of it in advance:
- Gloves, ideally nitrile, plus eye protection
- An approved sealed container and a drain pan for anything that escapes
- New hose sized to the original inside diameter and rated for injection pressure
- Replacement clamps, and a quick connect release tool if your coupler needs one
- Line clamping pliers, which take the place of the petcock this machine does not have
- Rags, a razor blade, and sockets for the seat and body panels
The safety note here is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor sinks and gathers around your feet, so open the garage fully or roll the quad outside and put a fan at floor level moving air away from you. No pilot lights, no grinders, no smoking, and pull the battery negative cable before you open anything. Keep a rag over each fitting as you break it loose so fuel drips into the pan instead of across the frame.
Getting the Old Hose Off the Fittings
Kill the pressure first. Remove the fuel pump fuse, try to start the engine so it burns off whatever remains in the line, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery. Then pull the seat and center plastics and trace the full run of hose so you understand where it clips in before you disturb anything. Photographs of the routing save considerable frustration later.
Ease the clamps back along the hose rather than fighting them in place. A barbed connection that will not release is best cut: slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it away, which protects a plastic fitting that has spent a decade in the weather. For a quick connect, press the tabs evenly and pull straight back, never rocking it side to side. Once the hose is loose, keep track of which frame guides it passed through, since the front differential hardware on this 4x4 leaves only one comfortable path.
Fitting the Replacement and Verifying It Holds
Match the new hose to the old one for length before installing. Push it onto each barb dry, all the way to the shoulder, resisting any urge to lubricate the fitting. Grease and oil compromise the seal on a pressurized line and can migrate into the fuel system. If the hose is stubborn, thirty seconds in hot water makes it pliable enough to seat by hand. Place new clamps behind the bead on each fitting and snug them uniformly, then confirm any self locking coupler has audibly clicked and will not pull apart.
Route the hose exactly as it came out, clipped clear of the exhaust and the front driveline, then reinstall the fuse and battery. Cycle the key several times to pressurize the circuit and inspect both joints with a dry rag before starting. Run the engine and check once more at idle, and only then reinstall the bodywork. Keep in mind that the filter on this injected Grizzly sits inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the visible hose, so lingering fuel starvation after a clean replacement points there next.
