Give your 2013 Grizzly 700 five minutes of honest inspection and it will tell you whether the fuel hose has any life left in it. Most owners never look, then get surprised on the trail. Since this is a fuel injected machine with an in-tank pump and no shutoff valve, knowing what to inspect and how to work safely around a pressurized circuit is worth more than raw wrenching speed.
The Five Minute Walkaround
Pull the seat and the side panel so you can see the hose from the tank back to the throttle body, then work through this list:
- Run a gloved finger along the full length and feel for hard, glassy sections instead of pliable rubber
- Look for fine cracking or crazing on the outer surface, concentrating on the bends where stress is highest
- Check both fittings for a caked ring of dirt, which forms where fuel has weeped and dried repeatedly
- Look under the machine for a wet spot or a puddle on the skid plate after it has been parked overnight
- Note whether there is a lingering gasoline smell around the center of the quad in the minutes after shutdown
- Think about how it runs: bogging on a climb, stumbling under acceleration, or a lean surge all suggest the engine is not getting all the fuel it wants
One caution specific to injection. On the pressure side, a pinhole can atomize fuel into vapor that evaporates before it reaches the floor, so a strong persistent smell with no puddle is still a real finding.
What Kills a Fuel Hose
Two processes work on the same piece of rubber from opposite directions. Heat cycling gradually drives the plasticizers out of the hose wall, and once those flexible compounds are gone the material hardens, loses its ability to move with the chassis, and begins splitting at bends and clamp shoulders. Dry, low humidity air speeds that hardening along, which is why riders in arid country replace hose more often than riders in damp climates.
Meanwhile ethanol blended pump gas attacks the bore. Alcohol draws moisture in and slowly degrades the inner liner, leaving gum and softened material that can shed downstream. A Grizzly that sits for a season with fuel standing in the line gets the full dose. Between the two, a hose can look passable while being compromised, and on a machine of this age the calendar alone justifies replacement.
Confirming the Fuel System Layout
The 2013 Grizzly 700 uses electronic fuel injection. Fuel is pushed, not gravity fed, by an electric pump mounted inside the tank, and it travels under pressure to the throttle body. There is no petcock underneath the tank to close, which is the single biggest difference from the carbureted utility quads many riders cut their teeth on. The circuit also retains pressure after the key goes off, so it must be bled before any fitting is opened.
Filtration sits with the pump inside the tank instead of hanging inline on the visible hose. That is worth remembering: a new hose fixes hose faults, but if fuel delivery still feels weak afterward, the in-tank module is where the investigation continues.
Parts, Tools, and Working Safely With Fuel
Have injection rated hose in the original inside diameter on hand, along with new correctly sized clamps, a quick connect release tool if the pump plate uses a locking coupler, and line clamping pliers to serve as the shutoff this machine lacks. Round that out with nitrile gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container, a drain pan, rags, sockets, a screwdriver, and a sharp utility knife.
Ventilation is the safety item that actually matters here. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it sinks and creeps along the floor where an open window at head height accomplishes nothing. Doing this in a closed garage with a water heater or shop heater running is asking for trouble. Work outside when you can, or roll the door all the way up and set a fan blowing across the floor to sweep vapor out. Kill every pilot light and heating element, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and take fuel soaked rags outdoors rather than leaving them in a shop bin.
Getting the Original Off
Depressurize first: pull the fuel pump fuse from the box under the seat, let the engine run until it starves and quits, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. With the bodywork already removed from your inspection, position a drain pan under the joint you plan to open and lay a rag over it, since a bled line still holds a slug of fuel.
Move the clamps well down the hose before you disturb the fittings. Plastic quick connects need their release tabs squeezed evenly and the coupler drawn straight off the nipple; prying sideways cracks a collar that has been hardening for over a decade. Where hose has varnished onto a barb, twist it gently to break the bond, and if it holds fast, slit it lengthwise and peel it away instead of levering on the fitting.
Trace the routing before the old hose leaves the machine. The four wheel drive layout on this Grizzly adds front differential hardware and frame structure that a 2WD quad does not have, and the hose has to clear all of it. A few photographs of the clips and guides now prevent a misrouted hose later.
Installation and the Final Pressure Test
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Extra hose does not simply hang there; it sags onto a crossmember and chafes, or wanders toward the exhaust where heat shortens its life dramatically. Slide each end onto its barb until it bottoms out, and assemble it dry. Nothing lubricated touches a fitting — grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a channel to creep along and escape. Hot water is the right way to soften a hose end that will not cooperate.
Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than crushed. If a connection is a self locking quick connect, no clamp belongs there; push it on until the collar clicks and then pull firmly to confirm the latch caught. Feed the hose back through every original clip so it hangs clear of the driveline and hot surfaces.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the hose, which lets you examine both joints while they are still dry and makes even a slow weep easy to spot. Wipe them with a clean rag, look and feel for any fuel beading up, then start the engine and check again at idle for several minutes before the plastics go back on.
