Somewhere under the bodywork of your 2013 Grizzly 550 4x4 Power Steering is a short length of rubber doing one of the most important jobs on the machine. When it hardens or cracks, you get leaks, poor running, or both. Replacing it is a satisfying job with a real payoff, provided you handle the pressurized side of this fuel system correctly.

The Fuel Circuit on Your Power Steering Grizzly

This 550 is fuel injected, which reshapes the whole procedure. An electric pump sits down inside the fuel tank, pushing pressurized fuel through the supply hose to the throttle body where the injector does the metering. There is no petcock to close, and the line stays pressurized after you shut the key off, so pressure gets relieved deliberately before anything is disconnected. Buy hose rated for injection pressure; the softer low-pressure hose sold for carbureted quads will weep here even in the right diameter.

Why Replacement Beats Patching

It is tempting to just tighten a clamp on a weeping joint and move on. That rarely holds, because the problem is usually the hose rather than the clamp. Engine heat cycles slowly drive out the compounds that keep the rubber flexible, so the wall stiffens and shrinks and no longer conforms to the barb underneath it. Dry desert or plains air speeds the process along by drawing moisture out of the material.

Working from the inside, ethanol-blended fuel pulls water into the system and degrades the hose liner over time, softening and sometimes shedding it while the outer surface goes glassy. Fuel left sitting for months leaves varnish that bonds the hose to its fittings and hides early seepage under dried gum. A clamp cannot restore a wall that has lost its elasticity, and a hose that has been through this much simply needs to come off.

Spotting Trouble Before It Strands You

  • Fuel puddling or staining underneath the quad after it has sat parked
  • A gasoline smell lingering around the machine, sharpest in the minutes after shutdown
  • Cracking, splitting, or a chalky hardened section you can feel by pinching the hose
  • A dust-caked ring at a fitting, which is dried fuel residue holding grit
  • Hesitation off idle, bogging under load, or a lean feel that mimics running low on fuel

Keep in mind that a small pressure-side leak may never leave a puddle at all, since fuel escaping a pressurized joint often evaporates before it drops. Smell is frequently your earliest and most reliable indicator.

What to Gather Before You Begin

Stage everything so you are never hunting for a tool with an open fuel line in your hand. You want nitrile gloves and eye protection, a wide drain pan, an approved sealable container, injection-rated hose in the original inside diameter, fresh clamps in the matching style, a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank fitting uses a locking coupler, line-clamping pliers to substitute for the fuel valve this machine lacks, hand tools for the seat and side panels, and a healthy pile of clean rags.

Take the ventilation seriously rather than treating it as boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level around the machine and your feet, where you will neither see nor smell it well. Push the Grizzly outside or open the bay wide and put a fan low to sweep air out. Remove every ignition source, hot work lamps included, and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach.

Working the Old Hose Free

Relieve pressure first: pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it dies on its own, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and whatever plastics block your view so you can see the full hose run instead of reaching in blind.

Get the pan underneath, cover the joint with a rag, and expect fuel to come out even from a depressurized hose. Slide each clamp well back along the hose before you disturb the fitting. Quick-connect couplers release when both tabs are pressed evenly and the coupler is pulled straight off with zero side load — aged plastic collars crack when levered. When varnish has welded hose to barb, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it away rather than forcing it.

Map the routing as you work. This is a 4x4 with power steering, so the forward chassis carries a front differential and steering components that a two-wheel-drive machine does not, and the factory hose path exists specifically to clear them. Photograph each clip and guide before the hose is fully out.

Installation Details That Matter

Cut the new hose to the length of the old one and no longer. Excess sags into the header or chafes against a frame weld; too little tugs at the fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry. Nothing lubricating belongs on those surfaces — grease, oil, and silicone spray create precisely the leak path you are trying to eliminate. A hose end that resists softens nicely after thirty seconds in hot water.

Place new clamps immediately behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, snug but not biting into the rubber. Self-locking quick-connects get pushed until they click and then pulled firmly to confirm they latched, and no clamp should be added. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and driveline movement.

Final Pressure Check and Cleanup

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without starting. The pump runs and pressurizes the hose each time, letting you inspect both joints on clean, dry rubber where a single bead of fuel is unmistakable. Wipe everything down and repeat if you are unsure.

Then start the 550 and let it idle several minutes, checking both connections again with a fresh rag and paying attention to the air around the tank. Reassemble the bodywork only once it has run leak-free. If fuel delivery still feels soft afterward, remember filtration on this model happens inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, so a restricted in-tank filter is the logical next thing to investigate.
