A soft, pliable fuel hose is one of those parts nobody thinks about until it starts weeping. On a 2013 Grizzly 550 4x4 the hose lives in a hot, cramped pocket between the tank and the throttle body, sandwiched against frame tubes and shielded from cooling airflow. Replacing it is well within reach of a rider with intermediate wrenching skills, but the order of operations matters here because this Grizzly is fuel injected.

Catching a Failing Line Before It Strands You

Most hose failures give warning. Park the quad on clean concrete overnight and look underneath in the morning — a dime-sized wet spot or a rainbow film is worth chasing down immediately. A gasoline odor that hangs around the machine after shutdown is another strong hint, and on an injected 550 that smell often shows up before any drip does, because pressurized fuel escaping a marginal joint tends to atomize and evaporate.

Ride quality tells you things too. A 550 that stumbles when you roll into the throttle, surges at steady cruise, or feels like it is starving on long climbs may be pulling air through a cracked hose wall or a loosened clamp. Run your fingers along the full length of the line with the engine off. Hose that feels stiff, chalky, or crunchy has already given up its flexibility, and a hardened section will keep cracking no matter how tight you crank the clamp.

What Turns Good Hose Into Bad Hose

Two separate processes are working on that rubber. From the outside, years of engine heat cycles bake out the plasticizers that keep the wall supple, and dry desert or high-plains air accelerates it by pulling residual moisture from the material. The hose shrinks slightly, loses its ability to conform to the barb, and begins to check with fine surface cracks that eventually run deeper.

From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas does its own damage. Alcohol attracts water and slowly attacks the inner liner, so a hose can be swelling and softening internally while the exterior turns brittle. Fuel left sitting through a long off-season leaves varnish and gum behind as it evaporates, which glues the hose to the fitting and hides seepage under a crust of dried residue. On a machine a decade or more into its life, calendar age is a better reason to replace the line than appearance.

Confirming You Are Working on a Pressurized Circuit

Do not go looking for a petcock under the tank on this one. The 2013 Grizzly 550 uses electronic fuel injection with an electric pump mounted inside the fuel tank, so there is no manual shutoff valve to close and the line stays under pressure even after the key is off. That means you relieve pressure deliberately rather than simply cracking a fitting, and it means the replacement hose has to be rated for injection pressure rather than the low-pressure hose sold for carbureted machines.

Gear, Gloves, and a Safe Place to Work

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, plus eye protection for the moment a fitting lets go unexpectedly
  • An approved sealed container and a wide drain pan to catch what comes out
  • High-pressure fuel injection hose in the original inside diameter, cut slightly long and trimmed to fit
  • Fresh clamps matched to the style you find, and a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch off any low-pressure or vent section, since no fuel valve exists to do it for you
  • Basic hand tools for the seat, side panels, and any tank straps, plus a pile of clean rags

Do this job with the garage door open or outdoors in moving air. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a fan low to the ground clears it far better than an open window overhead. No grinders, no work lights with hot bulbs, no smoking, and keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach.

Getting the Old Hose Off

Pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine for a few seconds until it dies, which bleeds most of the residual pressure. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the plastics that stand between you and the tank so you can see the whole hose run rather than working blind.

Slide a pan under the connection and drape a rag over the fitting before you release anything. Worm-gear and spring clamps should be walked well back down the hose first so they are out of the way. A quick-connect coupler wants the tabs squeezed evenly and the fitting pulled straight off — never pry sideways, because those collars grow brittle with age. When old hose is varnished onto a barb, slit it lengthwise with a razor blade and peel it away instead of twisting hard enough to damage the fitting.

Take note of every clip, guide, and clearance point on the way out. Being a 4x4, this Grizzly routes its plumbing around front differential and driveline hardware that a two-wheel-drive quad simply does not carry, so the original path exists for a reason.

Seating the Replacement

Trim the new hose to the same length as the old one. Extra length is not free — a long run sags into the exhaust or chafes on a frame weld. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray on a fuel fitting give pressurized fuel a path to creep out under the clamp, so keep all of it off the sealing surface. If the hose fights you, thirty seconds in hot water softens the end enough to slide on.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than crushed. Where the tank side uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until you hear and feel the click, then pull firmly to confirm it has latched. That style of fitting needs no clamp at all. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays away from the header and the front driveline.

Pressure Test Before the Plastics Go Back On

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off four or five times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and loads the system, letting you inspect both joints while everything is still visibly dry. Wipe the area clean, then start the 550 and watch again at idle for a full minute, checking with a fresh rag rather than your eyes alone.

One last thing worth knowing about this platform: the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline element you can swap on the visible hose. If your Grizzly still hesitates or leans out after a clean, leak-free hose replacement, that in-tank filter is the logical next suspect.
