How to Replace the Fuel Hose on a 2013 Grizzly 450 EPS

Before you loosen a single clamp, know that the 2013 Grizzly 450 4x4 Power Steering runs a carburetor rather than fuel injection. That means the hose between the tank and the engine holds no pressure, feeds by gravity, and can be isolated with the hand-operated fuel valve beneath the tank. There is no pump relay to pull and no pressurized coupler to unlatch, so the difficulty here is access and clean fitting work, not fuel system complexity.

Why the Original Hose Is Living on Borrowed Time

Fuel line hardens as the plasticizers that keep it flexible migrate out of the rubber. That happens on a calendar, not an odometer, and a hose that has lost them cracks at the bends near the valve spigot and carburetor inlet instead of flexing there. Engine heat cycling accelerates the stiffening, and riders in dry, low-humidity country see it happen sooner because arid air draws moisture out of the hose from the outside in.

The fuel inside contributes the other half. Ethanol blends degrade the inner liner and pull water into the system, and gasoline standing unused for a season leaves gum and varnish that narrows the bore. That is how a hose ends up brittle on the surface and shedding material within, and why a line with this many years behind it is worth replacing whether or not it has visibly split.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

  • Wet staining or a puddle under the frame after the quad has sat with the valve open
  • Gasoline odor that lingers in a closed garage long after shutdown
  • Surface cracks, a chalky texture, or a hardened section you can feel when squeezing
  • Bogging under throttle, a lean surge, or symptoms that mimic an empty tank
  • Dust caked into a damp ring at either barb

Because feed is by gravity, a marginal joint often stays dry until the tank is full. Fill up, park on level ground with the valve on, and revisit the machine in an hour before clearing the hose.

Preparation, Tools, and Ventilation

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A sealed fuel-rated container plus a shallow pan for drips
  • New gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter
  • Replacement spring clips or compact worm-gear clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch the hose closed while a fitting is open
  • Flat screwdriver, sockets, a fresh razor blade, and clean rags

Gasoline vapor is denser than air and settles at floor level, drifting toward pilot lights, chargers, and any tool that sparks. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open, cut power to ignition sources in the space, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and lid the drain container immediately after pouring.

Working the Old Line Free

Close the fuel valve, then loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through the overflow tube into your pan. Pull the seat and the front bodywork that blocks the tank outlet and carburetor inlet. On the power steering version, the EPS assembly and its wiring take up part of that space, so give yourself real access rather than reaching around it, and photograph the routing with all clips in place.

Ease the clamps back along the hose, then break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist and pull the hose straight off. When one has bonded hard, split it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of prying, since the valve spigot and carburetor inlet deform easily. This 4x4 chassis routes the line past front differential hardware and additional frame structure, so record each clearance point while the old hose is still in place.

Installing New Line the Right Way

Cut the replacement to the original length using the old hose as a guide. Extra slack sags into the frame, rubs a crossmember, or drifts toward exhaust heat. Push both ends fully onto their barbs and install completely dry — grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting create a leak path that clamp tension cannot close. Hot water for a few seconds is the only assistance a stubborn end should get.

Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting the rubber. Reroute the hose through its original clips, well clear of the steering hardware and front driveline, and replace a dark or gritty inline filter now with its flow arrow pointed toward the carburetor.

Verifying the Repair

Open the valve and let the machine stand for several minutes with a full tank so both joints see real head pressure. Blot each connection with a clean pale rag and look for amber staining rather than a visible drop, since a slow weep colors cloth first. Once the static check reads dry, start the engine and inspect again at idle while heat and vibration find what stillness hides.

Take a short shakedown ride, shut down, and check both ends one final time before reinstalling the plastics. Keep in mind that fresh hose fixes supply and not metering, so if the 450 still stumbles with a new line and a clean filter, the float level and jetting inside the carburetor are your next stop.
