That valve is your shutoff, the float bowl drain screw is your way to empty the carburetor, and everything else is clamps and clean fitting work.

Ventilation, Protection, and What to Have Ready

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It sinks to floor level and creeps toward water heater pilots, chargers, and anything with brushes or a flame, which makes an open overhead door or open sky the only acceptable workspace. Cut power to ignition sources, keep an extinguisher within reach, and cap your fuel container as soon as you are done pouring into it. Then gather:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A lidded fuel-rated container plus a shallow catch pan
  • Gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter
  • New spring clips or compact worm-gear clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers for pinching off an open end
  • Flat screwdriver, socket set, fresh razor blade, clean rags

The Case Against an Old Hose

Fuel hose does not fail from work; it fails from time. Plasticizers leave the rubber steadily, and the wall that remains is rigid enough to crack at the bends near the valve spigot and the carburetor inlet. Heat cycling off the engine drives that hardening forward, and riders in dry country see it move faster because arid air draws moisture out of the hose from the surface inward.

Inside the hose, ethanol-blended fuel degrades the liner and pulls water into the system, while gasoline left standing during long idle periods deposits gum and varnish that restricts flow. Those two mechanisms work against each other's evidence — the outside hardens while the inside softens and sheds — which is why a hose can look serviceable and still belong in the trash on a machine with this many years behind it.

Symptoms of Fuel Delivery Trouble

  • A puddle or damp trail under the frame after the quad sits with the valve open
  • A persistent gasoline smell around the machine, worst with a full tank
  • Fine cracking on the hose or a stiff, glassy section you can feel when squeezed
  • Bogging under load, lean surging, or the engine behaving as if the tank is dry
  • Grit packed into a wet ring where fuel has been seeping at a fitting

Gravity feed makes head pressure the tell here, so evaluate the machine with a full tank on level ground rather than judging a dry hose on a quarter tank.

Removing the Original Line

Turn the fuel valve off, then loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through the overflow tube into your pan. Remove the seat and whatever bodywork covers the tank outlet and carburetor inlet, then photograph the routing and every clip while it is untouched.

Slide each clamp back along the hose before disturbing a fitting. A gentle twist breaks the varnish bond built up over the years, after which the hose pulls straight off the barb. If one has fused hard, split it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of levering, because the valve spigot and carburetor inlet both bend easily. This is a 4WD chassis, so the line threads past front differential hardware and additional frame structure that a 2WD quad does not have — note every clearance point as the hose comes free.

Seating the New Hose

Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Anything longer will sag into the frame or edge toward exhaust heat, and both invite a repeat of the job. Slide each end fully onto its barb and install it dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere near the sealing surface, since any lubricant there gives fuel a path around the clamp. A quick soak of the hose end in hot water is the correct way to make it slide.

Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, firm enough to seal without biting the wall. Put the hose back through its factory clips, keeping it away from steering components and the front driveline, and replace the inline filter now if it looks discolored, orienting its flow arrow toward the carburetor.

Confirming the Job Is Dry

Open the valve and let the machine stand several minutes with a full tank so head pressure loads both joints. Blot each connection with a clean pale rag and look for amber staining rather than waiting for a drip, since a slow weep marks cloth well before it forms a drop. With the static check clean, start the engine and inspect again at idle while heat and vibration expose what stillness hides.

Finish with a short ride, shut down, and check once more before the plastics go back on. A fresh hose restores fuel supply but not metering, so if the 450 still stumbles with a new line and clean filter, turn your attention to float level and jetting inside the carburetor.
