Swapping a Worn Fuel Line on a 2013 Grizzly 350 4x4

Ride a 2013 Grizzly 350 4x4 long enough and the fuel hose becomes the oldest, most neglected rubber on the machine. It never gets adjusted, never gets inspected during a wash, and never announces itself until it drips or starves the engine. Replacing it before either happens is one of the smartest hours you can spend on this quad.

Start With What Feeds the Engine

This 350 is carbureted, which shapes the entire job. A manual fuel valve sits under the tank with ON, OFF, and reserve settings, a single rubber line carries fuel to the carburetor inlet by gravity, and the float bowl at the base of the carburetor has a drain screw. There is no fuel pump, no pressure to bleed, and no in-tank filter module. That is a meaningful contrast to a fuel-injected utility quad, where the correct opening move is always relieving system pressure and where a self-locking quick-connect fitting may replace the humble hose clamp. Here a lever handles the shutoff for you.

Because this is the four-wheel-drive model, the front differential and drive shaft share space beneath the frame, and the hose route is slightly longer with an extra clearance point compared with a 2x4. Same steps, a bit more routing awareness.

Two Kinds of Deterioration

Fuel hose fails from the outside in and the inside out at the same time. Heat cycling gradually drives the plasticizers out of the rubber, and once they are gone the hose loses flexibility and cracks at the bends rather than absorbing chassis movement. Dry climates hasten this because low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall, hardening it from the surface inward.

From the other direction, the ethanol in modern pump gas attacks the inner liner. Alcohol carries water into the fuel and degrades the inside surface, which softens and sheds fine particles toward the carburetor jets. Any stretch where the Grizzly sat with fuel in the system leaves gum and varnish behind as the light ends evaporate, restricting the bore and bonding the rubber onto its barbs. Age alone is a good enough reason to replace a hose on a machine of this vintage.

Symptom Checklist

Watch for these before they become a roadside problem:

  • Fuel puddling under the quad or streaking down a frame tube after shutdown
  • A gasoline smell around the tank that does not dissipate
  • Visible cracks, splits, or a chalky dry surface on the hose, worst at the bends
  • Rubber that feels hard when pinched, or soft and swollen at the fittings
  • An engine that bogs under throttle, hesitates on grades, or surges lean like it is out of fuel
  • Caked dirt in a ring at a barb from repeated weeping and drying

A faint smell with no drip still counts. A crack on the upper surface of the hose can release enough fuel to smell while it evaporates before reaching the floor, and it will only open further with use.

Preparation and Fire Safety

Set out the following before touching a clamp:

  • Fuel-rated hose in the stock inside diameter, cut a little long
  • Fresh clamps or spring clips, because old clips have relaxed
  • Gloves and eye protection — gasoline pulls the oils out of your skin quickly
  • An approved sealed fuel can and a low catch pan
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, a sharp blade, rags, and a work light

Then handle the fuel like the hazard it is. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and travels along the floor toward water heater pilots, chargers, and outlets near ground level. Do this outdoors if you can; inside, open the door fully and shut off anything that cycles or sparks. Pour drained fuel directly into a sealed container rather than leaving an open pan sitting, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within arm's reach.

Getting the Hardened Hose Off

Close the fuel valve. Remove the seat and whatever panel blocks the tank underside, slide the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties through its overflow tube, then close the screw. The line now holds almost nothing.

Push the clamp at the carburetor end well back along the hose, twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish grip, and ease it off the barb with steady pressure. If the rubber has fused onto the fitting, slit it lengthwise with the knife and peel it away rather than prying against the soft aluminum inlet. Repeat at the valve end, freeing the hose from each clip and guiding it past the front driveline hardware. With the hose out, inspect the valve screen for sediment while you have the access — that screen is the serviceable filter on this carbureted machine, whereas an injected quad hides its filter inside the tank with the pump where a hose swap cannot touch it.

Sizing and Securing the Replacement

Lay the old hose beside the new stock, mark it, and cut square at the identical length. Do not leave slack: on a 4x4 chassis extra hose can drift toward the front drive shaft or the exhaust, and a high loop can trap air in a gravity feed. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and assemble dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone off the fittings completely, since anything slick prevents a proper seal and lets vibration walk the hose off the barb. Warm a stubborn hose end in hot water for a few seconds instead of lubricating it.

Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without cutting into the rubber. Route the line through its original clips with an unbroken downhill slope, verify clearance from the differential hardware and hot surfaces, then tug both ends to confirm they are locked in place.

Leak Inspection and Final Steps

Open the valve and wait a full minute with a clean dry rag under each joint, watching for any hint of dampness. Fire the engine, let it idle while the float bowl fills and the motor warms, then check both connections and the ground under the machine. Give the throttle several sharp twists and inspect once more with the light, paying attention to the stretch near the front driveline. Once everything comes back dry, reinstall the bodywork and seat, clean up any spilled fuel, and dispose of the old hose and drained gas responsibly before the Grizzly heads back to work.
