Replacing a Cracked Fuel Line on the 2013 Grizzly 300 2x4

Ten dollars of hose and an hour in the driveway can keep a 2013 Grizzly 300 out of the back of a truck. This is a carbureted machine with a gravity feed system, which means the repair involves no fuel pressure, no special couplers, and no diagnostic equipment. What it does require is respect for the gasoline you are about to move around and a little patience getting old rubber off aged brass.
Start With the Fuel Valve
Everything about this job begins at the petcock under the tank. On the 2013 Grizzly 300 that lever is your shutoff, your reserve selector, and your first line of defense against a mess. Fuel leaves the valve, drops through the frame, and terminates at the carburetor inlet barb. Owners used to newer injected utility quads sometimes hunt for a fuel pump relay or a pressure test port before they start; neither applies here. The whole system is mechanical, which is exactly why it is such a friendly repair.
This is also a 2x4 chassis, so the underside of the tank is uncluttered. On four-wheel-drive versions of the platform the hose has to clear front drive components and picks up an extra guide or two along the way. Here, once the seat is off and the left panel is loose, you can put a hand on both hose ends without contortions.
Why Hose Hardens With the Years
A fuel line is a consumable, not a permanent part. The rubber compound holds softeners that slowly cook out under engine heat, and as they leave, flexibility goes with them. A hose that once bent easily starts to feel like plastic tubing, and the bends near the valve become stress risers where the first cracks appear. Arid climates accelerate this because dry air steadily pulls moisture from the hose wall, stiffening it faster than a humid environment would.
Meanwhile, ethanol-blended fuel goes after the inner liner. Alcohol carries water into the system and degrades the inside surface, leaving material that flakes off toward the carburetor jets. If the Grizzly has sat with fuel in it through a quiet stretch of months, evaporation concentrates gum and varnish inside the line as well. Hard outside, sticky inside, and restricted in the middle is the typical end state.
Warning Signs Worth Acting On
Any of these should send you looking at the hose:
- A visible puddle or damp streak beneath the machine hours after shutdown
- Persistent gasoline smell in the garage that gets stronger near the front of the quad
- Craze lines, splits, or a chalky finish on the hose surface
- Rough running under load: bogging in throttle, hesitation on climbs, or a lean surge at steady speed
- Grime built up in a ring where a fitting has been weeping
- A hose that is swollen, soft, and oversized at the barbs
Any single symptom is enough reason to replace the line, and a leak is reason to stop riding until you do. Gasoline dripping toward a hot exhaust is not a problem worth deferring.
Setting Up a Safe Work Area
Collect these before you begin:
- Fuel-rated hose in the original inside diameter, plus a few extra inches
- New clamps or clips appropriate to the fittings you find
- Gloves, eye protection, and a stack of rags
- A sealed fuel can and a low drain pan
- Hand tools for the seat and body panel, a screwdriver for clamps, and a sharp blade
Now the part that actually matters: gasoline vapor is heavier than air and creeps along the floor toward any ignition source it can find. Work outdoors, or with the overhead door fully open and nothing running — no space heater, no compressor cycling, no grinder in the corner. Keep an extinguisher nearby, and cap the drained fuel immediately rather than leaving an open pan sitting in the sun.
Getting the Old Hose Off the Barbs
Close the fuel valve. Slide the drain pan beneath the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through the overflow tube before snugging the screw again. With the bowl empty and the valve shut, there is very little fuel left to spill. Retract the clamp at the carburetor end well up the hose, then rotate the hose gently to break the varnish grip on the barb and pull it free. Stubborn rubber comes off best with a lengthwise cut from a razor so you can peel it away without stressing the inlet.
Repeat at the valve. Take a moment to check the valve screen for sediment while it is accessible, since a carbureted Grizzly gives you that inspection point — an injected quad hides its filter in the tank alongside the pump, where a hose replacement never touches it.
Fitting Fresh Line and Clamps
Measure the new hose against the old one and cut it square at the matched length. Too much hose sags, chafes, or loops high enough to trap an air bubble in a gravity feed. Push each end onto its barb until the rubber seats fully against the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and lubricant sprays have no business on a fuel fitting: they compromise the seal and let vibration walk the hose off the barb.
Place the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to grip without biting into the rubber. Route the line through the same frame opening with a clean downhill run, then pull on both ends to verify they are captive.
Final Checks Before the First Ride
Open the valve and wait. Watch each joint for sixty seconds with a dry rag underneath, checking for even a hint of moisture. Start the engine, let it idle while the bowl refills, then inspect both connections again along with the floor beneath the machine. A few throttle blips and one more look confirm the work. Reinstall the seat and side panel, clean up any spillage, and store the old fuel properly. With a fresh line in place, your Grizzly 300 should start crisp and pull cleanly without the fuel starvation that sent you out to the garage in the first place.
