Few jobs on a small-bore utility quad pay off as quickly as a fresh length of fuel hose. The 2013 Grizzly 125 is a carbureted, air-cooled single with a manual fuel valve under the tank and a short gravity-fed run of rubber heading down to the carburetor. There is no fuel pump to depressurize and no electronics to coax, which puts this repair squarely in reach of anyone comfortable with hand tools and a drain pan.
A Simple Gravity Feed System You Can Trace by Hand
Lift the seat and look at the underside of the tank on this 125 and you will find the petcock, a small lever valve with ON, OFF, and reserve positions. From that valve, one hose drops through a frame opening and lands on the carburetor inlet barb. That is the whole delivery path. Owners moving over from a newer fuel-injected machine expect an in-tank pump module, quick-connect couplers, and a filter buried inside the tank — none of that exists here. The trade is that the hose itself does all the work, so its condition matters more than it would on a pressurized circuit.
Because the Grizzly 125 is a two-wheel-drive chassis, the run is about as direct as it gets. There is no front differential or drive shaft crowding the space beneath the tank, so you can usually see both ends of the hose at once without pulling bodywork beyond the seat and a side panel.
Symptoms That Point at the Line
Trouble usually shows up in small ways first. Keep an eye out for:
- A damp patch or outright puddle under the machine after it has been parked overnight
- A gasoline smell that lingers around the tank area even with the valve turned off
- Visible surface cracking, a chalky gray tone, or a section that feels stiff and glassy when pinched
- Bogging on hills, a lean stumble off idle, or behavior that mimics running low on fuel when the tank is half full
- A dirt-caked ring at either barb, which is dried residue from slow seepage
A quad this size does not need much of a restriction to run poorly. A collapsed inner wall or a swollen, gummy section can throttle flow enough to lean out the mixture under load while idling perfectly in the driveway.
What Makes Rubber Fuel Hose Fail
Fuel hose ages from the outside and the inside at the same time. Heat cycling drives the plasticizers out of the rubber, and once they are gone the hose loses its flexibility and begins to craze. Riders in dry, low-humidity regions notice this sooner, since arid air pulls moisture from the hose wall and speeds up the hardening. Every bump that flexes a brittle hose deepens the fissures already there.
Ethanol-blended pump gas works the other direction. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and slowly attacks the inner liner, leaving a soft, tacky layer that sheds particles toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits unused for a season in a 125-sized system compounds this, because there is very little volume in the line to dilute what breaks down. On a machine over a decade old, calendar age alone justifies a new hose.
Gathering Parts and Working Safely
Set out everything before you touch a clamp:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- Fuel-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut slightly long so you can trim to fit
- New spring clips or small worm-gear clamps
- A sealed metal or approved plastic can for drained fuel and a shallow pan for drips
- Pliers, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and a basic socket set
- Clean shop rags and a razor knife
Take the gasoline seriously. Work outside or with the garage door fully open, since fuel vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level where a water heater pilot or extension cord spark can find it. No smoking, no grinders running nearby, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within arm's reach.
Removing the Old Hose
Turn the fuel valve to OFF first — this is the luxury a carbureted Grizzly gives you that an injected machine does not, and it removes any need for line-clamping pliers. Next, drain the carburetor float bowl using the drain screw and its short overflow tube, catching the fuel in your container. That empties the bowl and relieves the standing fuel in the line so it does not run down your wrist.
Slide the clamp at the carburetor end well back along the hose, then twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond at the barb before pulling. If the rubber has hardened onto the fitting, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off rather than levering on the carburetor inlet. Repeat at the petcock end. With the hose out, glance at the petcock screen for sediment while you have access — on a carbureted machine this is your serviceable filter, unlike the in-tank filter arrangement found on injected quads.
Routing and Securing the Replacement
Hold the old hose against the new stock and cut to the same length. Extra hose is not free insurance; it kinks, sags into the frame, or drifts toward the exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, working the hose on dry. Skip grease, oil, and silicone spray entirely — anything slick on a barb gives fuel a path to creep past the seal, and it lets the hose walk off the fitting over time. A quick dunk of the hose end in hot water softens it enough to slide on with thumb pressure.
Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, snug but not crushing. Guide the hose back through the same frame opening it came out of, keeping a smooth downhill path so gravity feed stays unobstructed with no high loop to trap air.
The Leak Check That Ends the Job
Turn the valve back to ON and simply watch for a full minute with a clean, dry rag under each connection. Any dampness means the hose is not fully seated or the clamp needs another turn. Fire the engine, let it idle to fill the bowl and warm up, then inspect both joints again and check the ground beneath the quad. Blip the throttle a few times and look once more. When everything stays dry, wipe up spilled fuel, reinstall the seat and panel, and take a short lap around the yard before loading up for a real ride on your Grizzly 125.
