Give the Hose a Real Inspection Before You Order Anything
Ten minutes with the seat off tells you most of what you need to know. Pull the seat from the 2013 KingQuad 400FSi, find the hose leaving the tank on its way to the throttle body, and run your fingers along its entire length. You are checking three things: flexibility, surface condition, and the state of both fittings. Good hose feels soft and springs back. Failing hose feels stiff, sometimes chalky, and shows a network of fine cracks the moment you bend it into a curve.
Then look at the ends. A hose that has swollen or gone soft and gummy where it slides over a barb has been chemically attacked from the inside, and no amount of clamp tension fixes that. Dirt caked into a damp ring at a fitting is proof of a slow seep even if you never saw a drip. If any of that turns up, the hose is finished and it is time to plan the swap.
Identify the Fuel System First
This model runs fuel injection, which the trailing letter in the FSi designation tells you outright. There is no petcock or fuel valve beneath the tank on an injected KingQuad 400, and the machine does not feed the engine by gravity. Instead a pump lives inside the tank, sends fuel down a pressurized hose, and the hose retains pressure after shutdown. Your shutoff is a pair of line clamping pliers, and your first action is always bleeding that pressure down.
The FSi pairs its injected single with a five speed semi-automatic gearbox and 4x4 drive, and the drive layout affects the job in one small way. Front differential hardware and extra frame structure crowd the hose path, so the factory clips do genuine work keeping the line clear of exhaust heat and rotating driveline components. Photograph the routing before the old hose comes out so you can rebuild it exactly.
The Reasons Fuel Hose Goes Bad
Age is the dominant factor. Rubber fuel hose depends on plasticizers to remain flexible, and those slowly migrate out of the hose wall over the years until the material cracks rather than bends. Repeated engine heat cycles speed that transformation, and the pounding a utility machine absorbs on rutted ground drives shallow cracks into leaking ones.
Where and how the quad is stored matters just as much. Dry, low humidity climates draw moisture out of the rubber and harden it from the outside inward, sometimes in fewer seasons than an owner would guess. Ethanol blended pump gas works the other side, pulling in water and degrading the inner liner whenever fuel sits still in the line for weeks at a time. The combination produces a hose that can look acceptable while quietly sending debris toward the injector.
Symptoms That Show Up While Riding
- Bogging under load or hesitation just off idle that was not present before
- Lean surging that feels like the machine is running out of fuel with plenty in the tank
- Hard starting after the quad has sat, particularly if the smell of fuel is strong
- Fuel odor around the machine after shutdown, while the system still holds pressure
- A puddle, stain, or damp patch on the skid plate or the floor beneath the frame
On a pressurized system, small leaks frequently atomize and disappear before they reach the ground, so treat a persistent odor as evidence even when nothing is dripping.
Preparation, Supplies, and Fume Control
Collect everything before you open the system. You want gloves and eye protection, hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, fresh clamps in the correct style, line clamping pliers, an approved sealed fuel container with a shallow catch pan, a socket set, a small flat blade screwdriver, a razor knife, and more rags than you think you need. A quick-connect release tool belongs on the list if the tank end uses a locking coupler.
Handle the gasoline with respect. Its vapor is heavier than air, which means it settles at floor level and creeps outward toward water heater pilots, shop heaters, and battery charger contacts. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open, get airflow moving low in the space, and kill every ignition source before you begin. Keep an extinguisher within reach, cap the container between pours, and never send drained fuel into a shop drain.
Removal and Installation
Relieve pressure first by pulling the fuel pump fuse or relay, cranking until the engine stalls, switching off the key, and disconnecting the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and any bodywork blocking access, position the catch pan, and drape a rag over the first joint since a depressurized hose still holds fuel.
Slide worm gear or spring clamps well back before you break a connection. For a locking quick-connect, press both tabs squarely and pull straight off rather than levering sideways, because a plastic collar of this age splits under that kind of load. Twist gently to break the varnish bond at a stuck barb, and if the hose will not come, slit it lengthwise and peel it off instead of gouging the fitting.
Cut the new hose to match the original length exactly, then push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder. Install it dry. Grease, oil, silicone, and sealant are all off limits on fuel fittings, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path out from under the clamp. Hot water softens a tight hose end if you need help. Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly to firm rather than crushing, and leave a self-locking quick-connect unclamped once it clicks and passes a firm tug. Restore the hose to every original clip and confirm clearance from exhaust and driveline before the bodywork returns.
Proving It Holds
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line, letting you catch a weep while the joints are still dry. Wipe each connection with a clean light colored rag so the smallest bead of fuel shows up, then start the engine and inspect at idle, and once more after a few minutes of running plus a slow lap of the yard.
One last piece of context. The fuel filter on the injected KingQuad 400FSi is part of the in-tank pump assembly, not an inline element on the hose you just replaced. A fresh line will not clear a restricted filter, so if delivery problems persist after a leak-free installation, that assembly is the next place to investigate.
