How to Swap the Fuel Line on a 2013 Suzuki King Quad 400ASi 4X4 Auto

The single most important sequence in this whole job happens before a wrench touches the machine: bleeding the pressure out of the fuel circuit. Skip it on a 2013 King Quad 400ASi and the first fitting you loosen will let you know in the least pleasant way possible. Do it properly and the rest of the removal is calm, dry work.
Bleeding Down the Circuit and Freeing the Hose
Begin by locating and removing the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine for a few seconds. It will stall or simply refuse to fire once the residual pressure is consumed. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable so nothing can arc while you have fuel exposed. Pull the seat and the plastic panels covering the tank until you can see both ends of the hose run to the throttle body, and slide a drain pan into position underneath.
Drape a rag over the first fitting you open. Even after bleeding, the hose holds a surprising amount of fuel that will run out the moment the joint separates. If the connection uses a worm-gear or spring clamp, walk it well back along the hose before you disturb anything. If it uses a quick-connect coupler, press the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off without prying sideways — those plastic collars grow brittle with age and will snap if you lever on them. Where the hose has varnished itself onto a barb, twist a quarter turn to shear the bond instead of hauling on it, and if it still resists, run a razor blade down its length and peel it off in halves. A hose you are throwing away costs nothing; a broken fitting costs a lot.
Trace and photograph the routing as it comes out. On this 4X4 chassis the line threads around the front differential housing, the front driveshaft, and additional frame crossmembers that a two-wheel-drive machine does not have, and the factory clips hold it clear of hot and rotating parts.
Understanding the Injected Fuel System
The 400ASi runs electronic fuel injection, which is why the depressurizing step exists at all. An electric pump inside the tank supplies the throttle body injector under pressure, so there is no petcock valve to shut off flow. Two other consequences follow: some connections are self-locking quick-connects rather than clamped barbs, and the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump module instead of an inline unit on the visible hose. If a fuel delivery problem persists after a clean hose installation, that in-tank filter deserves attention next.
Why Rubber Hose Does Not Last
Two aging mechanisms run in parallel. From the outside, engine heat cycles and years of air and sunlight exposure leach the plasticizers out of the rubber, taking it from pliable to stiff to cracked. Dry, low-humidity climates make this happen sooner, since the surrounding air keeps pulling moisture out of the hose wall. From the inside, ethanol-blended fuel absorbs water and slowly breaks down the liner, and fuel standing in the line during an idle season leaves gum and varnish at the fittings. Under pump pressure those weaknesses turn into active leaks faster than they would on a gravity-fed carbureted quad.
Symptoms of a Hose Near the End
- A gasoline smell around the tank that is sharpest immediately after shutdown
- A wet patch or dried stain on the skid plate, frame, or floor under the hose
- Fine cracking, a chalky surface, or a glassy hard section you can feel by squeezing
- A dirt-caked collar at a fitting, left behind by fuel that seeped and evaporated
- Bogging under load, a stumble on hard acceleration, or a lean feel at higher rpm
Because fuel escaping a pressurized joint tends to atomize, the absence of a puddle is not proof the hose is healthy. Smell for it and feel for it with the engine running.
What to Have Ready, and Working Safely
Gather nitrile gloves, safety glasses, a lidded fuel-rated container, a drain pan, replacement hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, correct clamps for the fittings you find, a quick-disconnect release tool if applicable, line-clamping pliers for pinching off a low-pressure section since there is no petcock, sockets and a screwdriver for the plastics, a razor blade, and plenty of clean rags.
Handle the gasoline with respect. Its vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level where furnace pilots and power strips sit, so real ventilation means the garage door wide open or the machine outside, not a cracked window. Keep every ignition source away, leave the battery disconnected until testing, and mop up spills immediately rather than letting them slowly evaporate across the shop.
Installation and Pressurized Verification
Cut the new hose to match the original length precisely; leftover slack only finds something hot or moving to rub. Press each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone anywhere near a pressurized fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a path out and lets the hose walk off the barb over time. Dip a stubborn hose end in hot water for half a minute to soften it. Position new clamps just behind each raised bead and snug them evenly, and where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until the collar clicks and pull firmly to confirm it has latched rather than adding a clamp it does not need.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting the engine. Each cycle pressurizes the circuit while everything around it is still dry, making a bad seal obvious. Then fire it up, wipe both fittings with a clean rag, and give it several minutes at idle under close observation. Finish with a short easy lap and a final warm inspection before the panels and seat go back on.
