Every fuel line on every machine is on a clock, and the one on a 2013 Scrambler XP 850 H.O. EPS has been running since the quad was new. Replacing it is an ordinary maintenance job with one important prerequisite: understanding that this Scrambler carries a pressurized injection circuit, so the sequence you follow matters as much as the tools you use.
Two Kinds of Damage, One Hose
A fuel line deteriorates from the inside and the outside at once, which is why age is a better predictor of failure than appearance. Externally, the plasticizers that keep rubber pliable slowly migrate out of the material. What remains is stiff, and a stiff hose cannot absorb the vibration and heat cycling it has always lived with. Cracks appear at bends and at clamp locations, where stress concentrates.
Internally, ethanol-blended fuel takes a different route to the same result. Alcohol draws moisture into the system, and a hose that spends months holding E10 while the machine sits develops a softened liner along with gum deposits that can break free later. Arid climates make the exterior worse still, because low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall and speeds embrittlement. On a machine over a decade into service, both mechanisms have had ample time.
Verifying This Scrambler's Fuel Delivery
The XP 850 H.O. EPS is fuel injected, and that shapes the entire procedure. An electric pump inside the tank pressurizes the supply line running forward to the throttle body, so there is no petcock to close and no gravity feed to interrupt. Raise the seat and you will find the pump and sender module bolted through the tank top with a wiring connector attached; the hose leaving it often ends in a plastic quick-connect collar rather than a plain barb.
Relieving pressure is therefore step one. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it dies from starvation, turn the key off, then disconnect the negative battery cable. This machine is also all-wheel drive with electronic power steering, which means the front differential, its frame supports, and the steering hardware all sit near the hose corridor. The procedure does not change, but the working room is noticeably tighter than a two-wheel-drive quad provides.
Signals of a Line About to Let Go
The failure is almost always preceded by clues:
- A puddle or damp streak on the skid plate or the floor beneath the machine
- A gasoline smell near the tank, sharpest in the minutes just after you shut the engine off
- Hairline checking, a chalky bloom, or a stretch of hose that has gone hard to the touch
- Bogging under throttle, breaking up at higher rpm, or symptoms that feel exactly like running out of fuel
- A caked band of dirt at a fitting, which builds up wherever fuel seeps and evaporates over and over
An injected system complicates the visual check. Pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole tends to atomize rather than drip, so a convincing smell with a dry floor is still evidence worth acting on.
Tool List and Honest Safety Prep
Collect everything before opening the system:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils in minutes
- A sealed, fuel-rated container to catch what drains out
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure and sized to the original inside diameter
- Fresh clamps matching the installed style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers, since there is no valve on this machine to shut off flow
- Sockets for the seat and plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and plenty of clean rags
Take the ventilation requirement liteRally. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor, drifting toward pilot lights, portable heaters, and anything else near ground level. Outdoors is the safest option. Working inside means the overhead door fully open and a fan low to the ground moving air out of the building, with no ignition sources anywhere near and a fire extinguisher within reach of where you are working.
Taking the Old Line Out
With pressure gone and the battery disconnected, remove the seat and any panels covering the tank so the full run to the throttle body is visible. Slide a catch pan under the low point and hold a rag around each fitting as you separate it, because a bled line still carries a slug of fuel.
Move spring clips and worm-gear clamps several inches back along the hose before the joint is disturbed. Quick-connect couplers need both tabs depressed squarely and a straight pull; plastic this old snaps if you pry sideways on it. Where varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, twist gently to break the seal instead of pulling hard, and if it will not surrender, slit the hose lengthwise with a blade and peel it off. Protecting the fitting matters more than saving a hose headed for the trash. Take photographs of the routing and each clip before the old line is fully free, especially around the front differential where the path is least obvious.
Making the New Connection Right
Cut the replacement to the length of the piece you removed. Extra hose is not a safety buffer; it chafes against frame edges or wanders toward the front driveline. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it seats against the shoulder, and do the whole assembly dry. Nothing lubricating belongs on a fuel joint, since even a thin film of grease or silicone gives pressurized fuel a route to escape past the clamp. Hot water for a few seconds is all a stubborn hose end needs.
Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, enough to seal without crushing the hose. A self-locking quick-connect at the tank pushes on until it clicks and takes no clamp at all; confirm the latch with a firm tug. Return the hose to every original clip and guide so it stays away from exhaust heat and the front driveline.
Pressurize, Inspect, Then Ride
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and loads the line, letting you inspect both joints under genuine pressure with the engine still cold. Wipe them with a clean light-colored rag and watch for a stain reappearing. Start the engine next, let it idle several minutes, and check a final time with everything hot. The plastics and seat go back on only after both connections stay dry under load.
Finally, a note about what a hose swap cannot do. The fuel filter on this injected Scrambler is part of the pump assembly inside the tank rather than an inline unit on the visible line. Fresh hose stops leaks, but if the engine still acts starved after a dry installation, the in-tank module is where the diagnosis continues.
