Fuel hose rarely fails all at once on a 2013 Brute Force 750 4x4i EPS. It gives you a series of small hints first, and most of them are easy to attribute to something else. Learning to read those hints is worth as much as knowing how to swap the hose, because the goal is catching a marginal line in the garage rather than discovering it two ridges from the truck.

The Warning Signs, In the Order They Usually Appear

  • A gasoline smell around the tank that is sharpest immediately after shutdown, while the injection circuit still holds pressure
  • Dried fuel residue at a fitting, showing up as a dark, dust-caked ring rather than anything wet
  • Surface cracking, a chalky bloom, or a section that feels rigid and glassy when you flex it
  • A wet patch or small puddle on the skid plate or shop floor after the machine has sat
  • The V-twin bogging under load, stumbling on hard throttle, or behaving as though it is starved at higher rpm

One caution specific to an injected machine: a leak on the pressure side often never leaves a puddle. Fuel escaping a pressurized joint atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a strong smell with no visible fuel is a legitimate finding and not a false alarm. Trust your nose here more than your eyes.

What Makes This Machine's Fuel Circuit Different

The Brute Force 750 4x4i EPS is fuel injected, and there is no petcock anywhere under the tank. An electric pump sits inside the tank and pushes fuel through a pressurized line forward to the throttle bodies on the 749cc twin. That means you cannot simply turn a valve and start pulling hose — the circuit must be depressurized deliberately, and it will hold pressure for a long while after the engine stops.

The fuel filter is bundled with the in-tank pump module rather than mounted inline on the visible hose, so replacing the line does nothing for a restricted filter. Expect the possibility of a self-locking quick-connect coupler at the tank outlet, secured by a plastic collar with release tabs rather than a clamp. Identify the fitting style before you pull on anything.

How Age and Ethanol Ruin Good Hose

The rubber hardens from the outside as the plasticizers that keep it flexible slowly migrate out of the wall. Heat cycling from a big air-cooled V-twin accelerates that, and dry climates accelerate it again by drawing what moisture remains out of the rubber. Once flexibility is gone, the constant vibration of a heavy utility quad on rough ground works fine checking into a real crack.

At the same time, ethanol-blended gasoline attacks the liner from within. The alcohol pulls in moisture and slowly breaks the inner surface down, and fuel that sits unused for months does the most harm. The softened liner releases fine rubber into a system that pushes fuel through injector openings measured in thousandths of an inch. On an injected engine that debris has nowhere forgiving to go, which makes hose condition worth more attention than it gets.

Assembling Tools and Working Safely

Get all of this together first: hose rated for injection pressure in the correct inside diameter, not general-purpose carburetor line; new clamps matched to the fittings you find; a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank uses a locking coupler; line-clamping pliers for pinching a low-pressure section, since no petcock exists to shut off flow; nitrile gloves and safety glasses; a sealed fuel container and a drain pan; screwdrivers, a socket set for plastics and tank hardware, a sharp blade, and plenty of rags.

Ventilation is not optional. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles along the floor, so an open window at head height accomplishes nothing — get the door up with real airflow moving through, or pull the machine outside. Remove low-level ignition sources in particular: unvented heaters, hot work lights, grinders, or a nearby appliance pilot. Keep an extinguisher at hand and seal the fuel container the moment you finish draining.

Depressurizing and Getting the Hose Off

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine until it stalls, which bleeds most of the pressure out of the circuit. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative. Remove the seat and the side plastics covering the tank outlet and the hose run heading back toward the throttle bodies.

Position the drain pan and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, since residual fuel remains even after depressurizing. Slide any spring clip or worm clamp back along the hose before touching the fitting. For a quick-connect, depress the tabs squarely and pull straight off — never lever it sideways, because aged plastic collars crack readily. A hose bonded to a barb by varnish should be twisted gently to break free, or slit lengthwise with the blade and peeled off if it refuses. Note the full routing as it comes out. On this 4x4 chassis the line passes front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers that a two-wheel-drive machine does not have, so photograph every clip and clearance point.

Fitting the New Line and Confirming It Is Dry

Match the replacement to the original length precisely. Extra length lets the hose chafe on the frame or interfere with steering components, and a short piece loads both fittings continuously. Push each end on dry until it seats fully against the barb shoulder. Keep grease, oil, and silicone completely away from the fittings; any lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path to creep out, and this system is far less tolerant of that than a gravity-feed setup. Warm a stiff end in hot water instead of lubricating it. Set clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly. If a self-locking quick-connect is used at the tank, push until the collar clicks audibly and then pull firmly to confirm engagement — that joint needs no clamp at all. Route the hose back through its original clips, clear of the front driveline and away from exhaust heat.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, giving you a chance to inspect both connections while the surrounding area is still dry. Wipe each joint with a clean rag and look closely for a bead. Then start the engine and check again at idle with full operating pressure and vibration present. Give it several minutes before the plastics go back on. If delivery still feels weak with fresh hose installed, the in-tank filter and pump module are the logical next place to look.
