There is no interval printed anywhere telling you when to change a fuel hose, which is precisely why so many of them stay on a machine until they fail. The line on a 2013 Brute Force 750 4x4i has now spent more than a decade carrying pressurized fuel to a 749cc V–twin, and that is reason enough to put a fresh one on.

Fuel Hose Is a Wear Part

Rubber fuel line is flexible because of plasticizers mixed into it during manufacture, and those compounds slowly migrate out over the years. What is left is a stiffer, slightly shrunken wall that cannot conform tightly to a barb under a clamp. Heat cycling from the big twin pushes the process forward every time the machine shuts down and the airflow stops, and frame flex on rough terrain works small fissures into whatever hardening has already occurred.

Where you ride matters too. Dry, low humidity country hardens hose considerably faster, because arid air pulls moisture out of the rubber. Coming the other way, ethanol–blended pump gasoline attracts water and breaks down the inner liner, doing the most damage when fuel sits unmoving in the line for months instead of circulating through it. Brittle outside and soft inside is the normal condition of an original hose at this age.

Understanding the DFI Layout

This Brute Force is fuel injected, and there is no petcock anywhere on the machine to shut off flow. An electric pump inside the tank supplies the throttle bodies, and the line remains pressurized after the key is off. That means the job opens with an electrical sequence rather than a wrench: pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stumbles and stalls to consume the residual pressure, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

Line–clamping pliers take the place of the shutoff valve you do not have, pinching a soft section closed so the tank does not siphon while a fitting is separated. Since this is a 4x4 with independent rear suspension, expect the hose to route past front differential hardware and extra frame bracing that a two–wheel–drive layout would not carry.

Reading Symptoms Correctly

  • A gasoline odor around the tank that persists after shutdown while pressure is still held
  • A wet film, a drip on the skid plate, or dust cemented into a ring at a fitting
  • Hairline cracking that opens when the hose is bent, or a chalky gray outer surface
  • A hard section that will not squeeze flat under your fingers
  • Bogging under load, a stumble on hard throttle, or a lean feel at higher rpm

Interpret those clues with the fuel system in mind. On a pressurized circuit, escaping fuel commonly atomizes and evaporates before it reaches the ground, so the absence of a puddle proves nothing. A persistent smell over a clean floor is enough to justify pulling the bodywork and inspecting.

Assembling Tools and Managing Fumes

Have on hand: replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the matching inside diameter, new clamps suited to the fittings you find, a quick–disconnect release tool if the machine uses a locking coupler, line–clamping pliers, gloves, eye protection, a shallow drain pan, a sealed gasoline container, a screwdriver, pliers, sockets for the seat and plastics, clean rags, and a sharp blade.

Then set up the space properly, because vapor is the actual hazard here. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air and collect at floor level, which is exactly where you will be working under the fender, so the ventilation that counts is at ground height rather than a window overhead. Push the machine outside or open the overhead door completely, keep chargers and hot work lights well clear, and shut off any appliance in the building running a pilot flame. Keep gloves on throughout, since gasoline absorbs through skin and dries it out.

Relieving Pressure and Disconnecting

After the bleed down sequence, take off the seat and the panels covering the tank and the hose run. Slide the pan into position and keep a rag over each fitting as you open it, because a depressurized line still holds fuel that will run out when the joint separates.

Move any clamp well back along the hose first, then twist the hose to shear the varnish bond that has built up on the barb rather than pulling hard. Quick–connect couplers require squeezing the locking tabs squarely and pulling the fitting straight off, never levering it sideways, since an aged plastic collar cracks easily. A hose end that has fused permanently should be split lengthwise and peeled away rather than forced. Document every clip and clearance point before the old line is out, because restoring the exact routing is what keeps the new hose off the driveline and away from the exhaust.

Installation Details That Matter

Cut the fresh hose to the original length and no longer. Extra hose sags into something that moves or wears itself thin against a frame tube, neither of which you want on a machine that spends time in mud and ruts. Clean both fittings, then press each hose end on until it bottoms fully against the shoulder.

Assemble it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to creep out along beneath the clamp. Hot water on a stiff hose end is the only help it should get. Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten evenly to firm without cutting into the rubber. For a self–locking quick–connect, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm engagement, and add no clamp. Reseat the hose in all of its original clips.

Verification After a Heat Cycle

Reinstall the pump fuse or relay, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you examine both joints with the engine off. Look first, then check by fingertip, since a slow seep is felt before it is seen. Start the engine and inspect a third time with a clean rag while it idles and comes up to temperature.

Put the plastics and seat back on only after everything reads dry, then ride an easy loop and check both fittings once more after that full heat cycle. If a delivery complaint outlasts a clean installation on this 2013 Brute Force 750, look toward the filter inside the tank, which is part of the pump assembly rather than an inline element on the hose you just replaced.
