Lay Out Your Supplies First
- Gloves in nitrile or rubber, plus safety glasses
- An approved gasoline container and a low drain pan
- New fuel line in the matching inside diameter, bought slightly long so you can trim it
- Fresh hose clamps or a mixed clamp kit, because decade-old clamps have lost their spring
- A stub of clear hose to run off the carburetor float bowl drain
- Flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a small socket set, and a pile of clean rags
Nothing about this job is difficult, but gasoline demands respect. Roll the machine outside or open the garage door completely, since fuel vapor sinks and collects near the floor rather than drifting out an open window. No grinders, no torches, no water heater pilot lights nearby. Spread spilled fuel out to evaporate in the open air instead of balling up soaked rags in a closed container.
How Fuel Reaches the Engine on This Machine
The Brute Force 300 is carbureted, and that shapes the whole procedure. A petcock at the tank gives you a positive shut off, so you can stop the flow completely before disconnecting anything, and fuel travels down to the carburetor on gravity alone. There is no in-tank pump to depressurize, no relay to pull, and no pressurized quick-connect coupler that needs a special release tool. Simple barbed fittings with clamps handle both ends of the line.
The carburetor also gives you a float bowl drain screw, which makes cleanup far easier. Empty the bowl into a container before you touch the hose and the carb side comes apart nearly dry. With this being a 2x4 chassis, there is no front differential or extra driveline hardware crowding the frame rails, so the hose run stays short and accessible — noticeably easier to reach than the same job on a four-wheel-drive utility quad.
What Kills a Fuel Hose
Rubber breaks down on a schedule of its own. The compound gradually loses the plasticizers that keep it soft, and heat radiating off the air-cooled 271cc single accelerates that loss year after year. A hose that starts out flexible ends up stiff and brittle, and once it reaches that state, everyday vibration cracks it at the bends and wherever a clamp has been squeezing.
Dry climates make it worse. Low ambient humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall and leaves the outer surface chalky and hard well ahead of schedule. Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from the inside instead, drawing in moisture and softening the inner liner until it starts shedding material toward the carburetor. That is why a Brute Force 300 that sits for a season with fuel in the line often ages its plumbing faster than one that gets used every weekend.
Symptoms That Show Up Between Rides
Look for a wet patch or slow drip beneath the left side of the machine, where the fuel valve and the hose run live. A persistent gasoline smell around the front bodywork is another early flag, and it often shows up before any visible fuel does. Pinch and flex the hose along its whole length; fine crazing, a hard glassy feel, or a swollen soft spot all mean the same thing.
Pay attention to how the engine behaves, too. A collapsing or air-leaking line starves the carburetor and produces a bog under acceleration, a lean surge at steady throttle, or the sensation that you are running the tank dry with fuel still in it. A ring of caked dust around one of the fittings usually marks a joint that has been seeping and drying for a while.
Draining and Disconnecting
Turn the petcock off before anything else. Pull the seat and any plastic panel that blocks your line of sight to the tank outlet and carburetor inlet. Slip your clear hose onto the float bowl drain, direct it into the container, open the drain screw, let the bowl empty, then close it again.
Slide the pan under your work area and drape a rag over the joint you are about to open. Loosen each clamp and walk it well back along the hose so it is out of the way. Rather than pulling the old hose straight off, twist it on the barb to break the varnish that has glued it in place; a hard yank puts unnecessary load on the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet. Stubborn hose comes off easily if you slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away. Before the old piece is fully clear, note every clip and frame guide it passed through.
Seating the New Line and Confirming the Repair
Trim the replacement to the same length as the original. Extra hose invites chafing against the frame or a kink that restricts flow, while a short piece keeps constant tension on both fittings. Work each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and install it completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel fitting; lubricant on the sealing surface creates the leak you are trying to eliminate and lets the hose migrate off the barb under vibration. Soften a tight end in hot water for a few seconds if it fights you.
Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly. Snug is the goal, not crushed, since biting into the hose wall does more harm than good. Open the petcock and give it a minute to fill the line and refill the float bowl, then examine both joints closely with a dry rag and strong light. Start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and inspect once more while it is warm and running. When both connections are bone dry, reinstall the bodywork and seat, and your 2013 Brute Force 300 is ready for the trail again.
