Aging Rubber and the 2013 Recon ES Fuel Line

The fuel hose on a 2013 TRX250 Recon ES has been quietly getting worse since the machine was new, and it has been doing it whether the quad racked up hours or sat in a shed. Replacing it is cheap; understanding why it needs replacing is what keeps you ahead of the failure.
The Two Ways Fuel Hose Dies
The outer wall loses to heat and light. An air-cooled 229cc single throws real heat, and every warm-up followed by a cool-down drives off a bit more of the plasticizer that keeps the rubber elastic. Over a decade the hose becomes stiff and slightly glassy, then begins checking at whatever bend flexes hardest. Ultraviolet light filtering past the plastics works in the same direction, and machines kept in arid, low-humidity regions harden noticeably sooner because dry air keeps drawing moisture out of the compound.
The inner liner loses to fuel chemistry. Ethanol-blended gasoline attracts and holds water, and every span of the Recon ES sitting unused with gas standing in the line leaves that mixture pressed against the rubber, softening it and depositing gum. The end result is a hose that is brittle where you can see it and swollen where you cannot — a combination that produces both leaks and flow restriction.
Checking the Fuel System First
The 2013 Recon ES is carbureted, and its electric shift system governs gear selection rather than fuel delivery. There is no in-tank pump, no pressurized circuit, no injector, and no relay or fuse to pull before starting the work. A petcock under the tank offers ON, OFF, and reserve, which is your shutoff. Standard clamps retain both hose ends instead of the locking quick-connect couplers used on injected machines, and the carburetor float bowl drains through a screw on its underside. Nothing critical to this job hides inside the tank.
Access is straightforward because the Recon ES is 2WD with a solid rear axle. No front differential and no extra driveline housings sit beneath the tank, so the hose route is short and stays visible once the seat and left side panel are removed.
Evidence of a Line That Is Done
Any of these should put you under the fender:
- A gasoline smell hanging around the machine well after it cooled
- A small puddle, wet ring, or drip trail below the left side of the engine
- Cracks at bends, a chalky exterior, or hose that feels like hard tubing
- Dust caked in a band at either clamp, which is dried fuel from slow seepage
- Bogging under load, a lean surge, or an engine acting empty with fuel still in the tank
Since gravity is the sole delivery force on this machine, restriction hurts as much as leakage. An internally swollen hose can hold a steady idle in the driveway and then starve the carburetor on a long uphill pull.
Getting Set Up
Lay out the following first:
- Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
- New spring clips or compact worm-gear clamps
- Rubber gloves and eye protection
- An approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
- Line-clamping pliers as backup if the petcock weeps past OFF
- Flat-blade screwdriver, socket set, razor knife, clean rags, work light
Handle the gasoline seriously. Its vapor is heavier than air, so it drops to floor level and travels outward until it reaches a water heater pilot, a charger, or a spark. Work outdoors or with the door fully open at ground height, let the engine cool completely, keep an extinguisher within reach, and spread used rags outside to dry instead of closing them in a can.
Out With the Old Hose
Turn the petcock OFF, remove the seat, and take the left side panel off. Slide the drain pan under the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through its tube. With the fuel level dropped, retract both clamps well clear of the fittings and plan on replacing them regardless of condition.
Twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond before pulling it off. If an end has hardened solidly onto the fitting, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away in strips rather than levering with a screwdriver — both the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet crack easily with age. Note the routing clips and the hose clearance from the exhaust header before the old piece is fully out.
New Line In and Leak Tested
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Push each end on dry until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder, and keep grease, oil, and silicone completely off the sealing surfaces, since lubricant on a barb creates a seep path and lets the hose walk off over time. A tight end goes on easily after half a minute in hot water. Position each clamp just behind the raised bead, tighten evenly without crushing the rubber, and return the hose to its original clips.
Close the float bowl drain screw and turn the petcock to ON. Watch both joints for a solid minute while fuel refills the bowl, then wipe everything down with a clean rag so fresh seepage shows immediately. Start the engine and inspect at idle, then ride briefly and check once more warm, since heat expansion can reveal a clamp that seemed fine cold. Squeeze the tank vent hose while you are there too, because it hardens on the same schedule and a restricted vent produces starvation symptoms of its own.
