How old is too old for a fuel hose? There is no odometer reading that answers it, because the hose on a 2013 Recon ages on the calendar rather than on the trail. A machine with four hundred careful hours on it can have hose in worse shape than one that gets ridden hard every weekend, and understanding why explains when to replace it.
Age Beats Mileage on Rubber Parts
Fuel hose stays flexible because of plasticizers blended into the rubber. Heat drives them out permanently, and it does not take hard riding to generate heat — every warm-up and cooldown cycle from the air-cooled 229cc single takes a little more. After a decade or more the compound has stiffened enough that the hose no longer springs back when squeezed, and a hose that cannot flex cannot absorb the bend where it curves toward the carburetor. Stress concentrates at that curve and a crack opens there first, every time.
Climate shifts the timeline. Owners in dry, high-desert regions see hardening arrive years earlier, because low ambient humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and works the stiffening in from the outside. The same machine in a humid climate can keep a pliable hose noticeably longer.
What the Fuel Itself Contributes
Ethanol-blended gasoline attacks from the opposite direction. Alcohol pulls water out of the air and holds it in the fuel, where it sits against the hose liner continuously, and it acts as a mild solvent on rubber compounds all the while. The worst case is fuel standing motionless in the line for months, which oxidizes into gum and varnish. That deposit hardens a layer inside the hose that restricts flow and simultaneously releases fine particles that travel downstream into the carburetor jets. A hose can therefore be brittle on the outside and crumbling on the inside while still looking acceptable at a glance.
The Warning Signs
- Raw gasoline smell lingering around the quad well after shutdown
- A damp spot or slow drip on the floor under the left side of the engine
- Fine surface cracking, especially on the outside of a bend
- A chalky gray appearance or a hard, slick feel to the hose
- A caked dirt ring at either fitting where fuel has seeped and dried
- Bogging on climbs, hesitation off throttle, or an engine acting starved with a full tank
Since the Recon is gravity fed, a crack anywhere above the carburetor can empty the tank onto the floor with the ignition off. That is the practical reason not to postpone a hose you already have doubts about.
The System on Your Recon and What You Need
The 2013 Recon uses a carburetor. Fuel leaves the tank through a manual petcock with OFF, ON, and RES settings and drops through one short hose into the carburetor inlet. Nothing is pressurized, there is no pump, and closing the valve isolates the system completely. That differs from an injected quad, where a tank-mounted pump keeps the supply line under pressure and the fuse must be pulled and the engine run until it stalls before any fitting is opened.
Two-wheel drive keeps the access simple: pull the seat and the plastic over the tank and the whole hose run is exposed. Four-wheel-drive utility quads route their lines around a front differential and additional frame crossmembers, which adds clips and clearance points. Gather gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, two new clamps, gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container with a funnel, a screwdriver, pliers, a socket set, a razor blade, and rags. Buy new clamps, since old spring clamps have lost tension and worm-gear bands stay deformed after their first tightening.
The genuine hazard is vapor. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks off the machine, spreads across the floor, and finds ignition sources at ground level like water heater pilots, shop heaters, and battery chargers. Work outside if you can. Indoors, open the overhead door fully, shut off anything with a flame, keep drained fuel capped rather than open in a pan, and wear gloves because gasoline strips skin oils immediately.
Removing the Old Hose
Turn the petcock to OFF. Slip a short piece of hose over the float bowl drain nipple at the bottom of the carburetor, run it into your container, and open the drain screw so the lowest point of the system empties before you disturb anything. Slide both clamps back clear of the fittings, then grip the hose beside each barb and rotate it a quarter turn in both directions. That shears the varnish bond and the hose pulls off with minimal force. A hose too hard to twist should be slit lengthwise with the razor and peeled off the spigot rather than pried, protecting the petcock outlet and the carburetor inlet from cracking. Photograph the routing before the old hose is fully free.
Installing the Replacement and Verifying It
Cut the new hose to match the original length so it follows the same gentle arc, clear of the exhaust and shift linkage, without kinks. Dip each end in hot water briefly, then push it fully onto its barb until it seats past the retaining bead. Assemble everything dry, because grease, oil, or silicone on a barb keeps the rubber from gripping the metal and opens a slow weep that clamping will not seal. Position the new clamps just behind the bead at both ends and tighten evenly, snug enough to seal without biting into the wall. Both connections here are clamped barbs, in contrast to injected machines where some joints use self-locking quick-connect couplers that require no clamp.
Open the petcock and let it stand five minutes with the engine off, using gravity as your test pressure. Inspect both joints under strong light, then wipe each with a clean dry rag and look for fuel transfer on the cloth. When both come back dry, start the engine and check once more at idle, since vibration reveals a marginal seal that held perfectly still. Take the extra minute to pull the petcock screen and rinse it in clean fuel while access is good. That filter is serviceable on a carbureted 2013 Recon, whereas an injected machine keeps its filter inside the tank with the pump and offers nothing to clean on the visible line.
