The 2013 Rancher 420 4x4 ES with power steering carries its fuel in a simple gravity-fed circuit, and the actual hose swap takes only a few minutes once the machine is opened up and the right parts are sitting on the bench. Do the gathering first and you will never be standing there with an open fitting in one hand looking for a clamp.
Laying Out Parts and Tools First
- Rubber or nitrile gloves, and eye protection if you are working under the machine
- Replacement fuel hose in the correct inside diameter, cut a little long so you can trim to match
- New clamps sized for the hose, since the factory spring clamps relax with age
- A sealed container for drained gas and a funnel that fits its neck
- Needle-nose pliers, a hose pick, a sharp razor blade, and a flat-blade screwdriver
- Sockets for the seat catch and the plastic panels around the tank
- Plenty of shop rags and a spare pair of gloves
Now the safety part, and it is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor pools at floor level rather than rising, so open the garage door completely or roll the quad outside instead of relying on a window. Disconnect the battery negative before you begin, keep every ignition source out of the area, and have the container capped when you are not actively pouring into it.
Knowing Which Fuel System Sits Under Your Fenders
The 2013 Rancher 420 uses a carburetor, which means a manual petcock below the tank, unpressurized hose, ordinary barbed fittings, and a float bowl you can drain from underneath. Turn that valve off and fuel flow genuinely stops. Later Ranchers on this platform moved to fuel injection and work differently at nearly every step: no petcock exists to shut, the circuit holds pressure from an in-tank pump that must be bled down before anything is opened, and the connection at the tank is frequently a self-locking quick-connect rather than a hose clamp. Your machine is the simpler of the two.
One practical note on this specific configuration. Between the 4x4 front driveline, the electric shift hardware, and the power steering unit near the steering stem, there is less open space around the front of the engine than on a two-wheel-drive quad, and the line takes a slightly longer path around that structure. Photograph the routing and every clip before you disturb it.
Why These Hoses Give Up
Rubber fuel line does not fail suddenly so much as it quietly runs out of service life. The compounds that keep it soft migrate out over years of heat cycling off the engine, and the hose gradually stops being able to squeeze itself against the barb it sits on. Dry climates speed this along noticeably, because low ambient humidity draws moisture from the hose wall and hardens the outer surface long before the mileage would suggest.
Meanwhile ethanol-blended fuel works on the liner from inside. It pulls in water, attacks the inner wall, and leaves varnish and gum behind whenever the machine sits unused for a stretch with fuel in the system. The two processes together produce a hose that is brittle outside, degraded inside, and still looks acceptable from three feet away. If your Rancher has its original line, age alone justifies replacing it.
Catching a Bad Line Before It Strands You
Watch for a fuel smell that hangs around the machine, a wet spot under the left side after parking, or visible cracks and a chalky texture on the hose itself. Flex a suspect section with gloved fingers; a healthy hose bends smoothly while a failing one feels stiff and crackles. Weeping at the fittings shows up as a dark stain or a collar of dirt stuck to dried fuel.
Running problems count as symptoms too. A restricted or internally collapsing line delivers less fuel than the carburetor asks for, and the engine responds with bogging on acceleration, a stumble under load, or a lean surge at steady throttle. Riders often chase that as a jetting or spark issue when a five dollar hose is the actual cause.
Draining Down and Removing the Old Hose
Turn the petcock off. Remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so the valve, the hose run, and the carburetor inlet are all in view. Slide your container under the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty into the container through its drain tube. Drop a rag under the first fitting you plan to open, because the hose itself still holds fuel even with the valve closed.
Work each clamp well back along the hose before touching the connection. Rotate the hose on the barb to break the varnish grip instead of hauling straight back on it, and if an end has hardened onto the fitting, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off. That is always cheaper than cracking a carburetor inlet or bending the petcock spigot. Keep track of every clip the line passed through as you free it from the frame.
Fitting the Replacement and Verifying It
Trim the new hose to the exact length of the old one, then push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder. Install it dry. Grease, oil, or spray lubricant on a fuel fitting is a slow leak waiting to happen, since it prevents the rubber from gripping the metal the way it needs to. Hot water for a few seconds is the only assistance a stiff end should get.
Position the new clamps behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without biting into the rubber. Return the line to its original guides so it stays away from exhaust heat and the front driveshaft, with no kinks. Close the float bowl drain, open the petcock, and watch both joints for two full minutes with the engine off, wiping each with a dry rag and checking the rag rather than eyeballing it. Then start the engine, let it idle and warm, and inspect once more while it is vibrating. Panels and seat go back on only after the repair proves dry.
