The 2013 model year was the last of the carbureted Rancher 420s before the platform moved on, which makes yours one of the easiest ATVs on the trail to service in this particular area. Everything between the tank and the engine is mechanical, visible, and unpressurized. Here is how to inspect that circuit properly and renew the hose before it decides to renew itself somewhere inconvenient.
The Circuit You Are Working On
Fuel leaves the tank under nothing but gravity, passes through a manual fuel valve mounted where your hand can reach it beneath the tank, and travels a short rubber hose to the carburetor inlet. Turn the valve off and flow stops, full stop. Both hose ends are barbed fittings secured with small spring or wire clamps, and the carburetor carries a float bowl drain screw and tube so the bowl can be emptied deliberately into a container.
Compare that with the injected Ranchers that followed on this platform, because generic fuel line guidance often assumes them. Those machines have no petcock, so the hose must be clamped shut with pliers or the pump circuit shut down and the residual pressure bled off before anything is loosened. Their inline filter is not inline at all; it lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. And their tank side connection is frequently a self locking quick connect coupler that takes no clamp and should never have one added. Your 2013 needs none of that.
Age, Heat, and Ethanol
Two independent processes are working on your hose right now. From the outside, heat cycling off the 420 single drives the plasticizers out of the rubber year after year. The compound hardens and loses the springiness that let it grip the barb, so a connection that was dry for a decade can begin weeping with no crack anywhere on the surface. Riders in dry, arid country reach this point sooner, since low humidity keeps pulling moisture out of the hose wall and stiffening the jacket.
From the inside, ethanol blended fuel absorbs water and slowly degrades the liner, softening and swelling it and leaving gum and varnish behind, particularly during stretches when the machine sits unused with fuel in the system. Neither process leaves an obvious external mark until it is well advanced, which is why a decade old hose on an otherwise healthy Rancher is a reasonable thing to replace on age alone.
How a Failing Line Announces Itself
- Persistent gasoline odor around the quad that lingers after it has been parked
- Dampness or a small puddle on the skid plate or shop floor below the tank
- Visible fine cracking, chalky discoloration, or a stiff section that crackles when bent
- Grit caked in a ring at a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried repeatedly
- The engine bogging on hills, stumbling when the throttle is opened, or surging like the tank is dry
Those last symptoms are the ones owners misdiagnose most often. A hose that restricts flow, collapses internally under suction, or lets air past a fatigued clamp will lean the mixture out and mimic a jetting or ignition problem exactly. Rule out the cheap part before ordering the expensive ones.
Parts, Tools, and Handling Fuel Sensibly
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, plus eye protection when you are working underneath
- Replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, left slightly long to trim
- Fresh clamps, since the factory spring clamps lose tension with age
- An approved container with a funnel for the fuel you drain out
- Needle nose pliers, a hose pick, a sharp razor, and a flat blade screwdriver for the bowl drain
- Sockets for the seat and tank plastics, and a stack of clean rags
Ventilation is not a formality here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level exactly where you will be working, so open the overhead door fully or push the machine outside rather than relying on a window overhead. Pull the battery negative terminal first, keep grinders, heaters, and flames out of the space entirely, and keep the fuel container capped between pours.
Taking the Old Hose Off
Close the petcock. Pull the seat and the panels covering the tank so you can see the valve, the entire hose run, and the carburetor inlet together. Position your container under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through the drain tube. Put a rag beneath the first fitting you plan to open, since the hose remains full with the valve shut.
Slide each clamp back along the hose before you touch the joint, then break the varnish bond by twisting the hose on the barb rather than pulling straight against it. An end that has effectively glued itself on should be slit lengthwise with the razor and peeled away instead of levered. As a 4x4 with electric shift, this Rancher routes its line past the front driveline and additional frame structure with the shift motor harness close by, so note the clips and guides before the hose is fully out and do not mistake the tank vent hose for the fuel supply.
Fitting the New Line and Proving It Dry
Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed so it neither chafes on the frame nor pulls at the fittings. Push each end onto its barb dry, all the way until it bottoms against the shoulder. No grease, no oil, no silicone spray; anything slick on that sealing surface gives fuel a path to work its way out later, and it is the most common reason a fresh install starts weeping. Hot water for a few seconds is the only assistance a stiff end should get.
Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, snug without crushing. Route the hose through its original guides, clear of the exhaust and the front driveshaft, with no kinks or tight radius bends. Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and give it two full minutes with the engine off while gravity searches for a leak. Wipe both joints with a dry rag and read the rag, not the fitting. Then start the engine, let it idle to temperature, and inspect once more while it vibrates, because a marginal clamp will often only show itself then. Plastics and seat go back on after several minutes of dry running.
