The Slow Death of a Fuel Hose
Rubber intended for fuel service is compounded with additives that keep the wall flexible. What is left behind is a wall that feels hard rather than springy, sometimes with a chalky bloom on the surface. Levering a decade-old collar sideways is a good way to break it. If varnish has welded the hose to its barb, twist gently to free it, or slit it lengthwise and peel it away. Hot water on a stiff hose end is the correct shortcut.
Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to snug. Route the hose through its original guides and check clearance to the exhaust and the front driveshaft area with the bars swept both directions.
Then prove the work. Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while both fittings are clean and dry. Inspect with a light, wipe everything down, and inspect again for fresh dampness. Start the engine, check at idle, blip the throttle, and check once more before the plastics return.
