Setting the Bench and the Space

  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure, matched to the original inside diameter
  • A sealed fuel-rated container plus a funnel for transferring what you catch
  • New clamps in the correct style, and a quick-connect release tool if your fitting has a locking collar

  • Hand tools for the seat and panels, a razor knife, and a good supply of rags

Handling gasoline safely comes down to one physical fact: the vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and spreads across the floor rather than escaping upward. Do the job outdoors when the weather cooperates, and if you must work inside, open the door completely, clear the space of ignition sources, and take fuel-soaked rags outside when you finish.

Cutting Power to the Pump and Opening the Line

Pull the fuel pump fuse, run the engine until it stalls out on its own as confirmation that pressure has bled off, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable so the pump cannot restart while the circuit is open. Slide a catch pan under the work area and lay a rag over the joint you are about to break, because a depressurized hose still holds fuel inside it. Walk worm-gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. Release quick-connect couplers by depressing both tabs squarely and pulling straight off, and resist any temptation to lever them sideways against a collar that has been baking in engine heat since 2013. If the hose end resists, dip it in hot water for a few seconds.

Set each new clamp just behind the raised bead on its fitting and tighten evenly to snug rather than crushed. Return the hose to every factory guide and check clearance to the exhaust and the front driveline with the bars turned both directions.

Verification, Then a Word About the In-Tank Filter

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. The pump runs briefly with each cycle and pressurizes the line, giving you a loaded system to inspect while both fittings are still clean enough to reveal a fresh wet spot. Look with a light, wipe them down, and look again. Start the engine, inspect at idle, blip the throttle, and inspect once more before any bodywork goes back on. Several minutes of dry running is the standard to hold yourself to.

Fresh hose ends leaks and cures a collapsed section, but restricted flow through an aging in-tank filter produces the same lean, bogging complaints.
