The 2013 Rancher 420 2x4 closed out the carbureted era for this platform, and that makes the fuel line job on it refreshingly mechanical. A manual valve at the tank, a gravity-fed hose, ordinary clamps, and a float bowl you can drain on purpose — nothing here holds pressure or requires you to disable a pump before you begin.
Knowing the System You Are Working On
With the seat off you can see the whole arrangement. The fuel valve mounted at the tank is the shutoff, and closing it stops flow entirely. From there a short hose drops to the carburetor, held by clamps at each end. The float bowl at the bottom of the carburetor retains fuel even after the valve is shut, so its drain screw becomes part of the procedure rather than an afterthought. This being a 2WD Rancher, there is no front differential crowding the frame, which leaves the hose exposed and simple to trace end to end.
Recognizing a Hose That Needs Attention
Signs tend to arrive in this order: a smell, then a stain, then a stumble.
- A gasoline odor under the seat, strongest with the fuel valve left open
- A wet patch or small puddle on the floor after the machine has sat
- Fine cracking, a chalky white surface, or a stretch that feels rigid when squeezed
- A crust of dust glued to dried fuel residue at either clamp
- Bogging under load, lean running at higher rpm, or the feel of an empty tank when it is not
Because this Rancher relies on gravity rather than a pump, there is no reserve of pressure to compensate for a partially restricted hose. That is why performance complaints often appear when the engine is working hardest.
What Ages a Fuel Hose
Heat is the main driver. The plasticizers that keep fuel hose pliable slowly leave the rubber under repeated heat cycles, and the hose stiffens until it can no longer flex with the chassis. Once that happens, vibration and frame movement crack it at the bends and under the clamps.
Environment and fuel both accelerate the process. Machines kept in dry, low-humidity regions lose moisture from the hose wall continuously and harden earlier than identical quads in wet climates. Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks the inner liner whenever it sits motionless for a season, absorbing water, softening the material, and leaving gum that can restrict the passage. Because that internal damage stays hidden, hose age is as meaningful as hose appearance on a Rancher this old.
Preparation, Tools, and a Real Safety Note
Set out gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed gasoline-rated container, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, fresh clamps or spring clips, pliers, a razor blade, a flat-blade screwdriver, and a stack of rags.
Then handle the ventilation seriously, because it is the one part of this job that can genuinely hurt you. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drops to the floor and travels along it toward water heater pilots, portable heaters, and electrical connections sitting at that height. Position the Rancher outdoors or immediately inside a fully open door, extinguish every flame source in the building, keep an extinguisher within reach, close your fuel container the moment it holds gas, and carry soaked rags outside instead of piling them near the bench.
Removing the Old Line
Close the fuel valve and let the engine idle until it stalls, which burns off most of the bowl's contents. Slide the pan under the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and empty the remainder before closing it. Take the seat off along with any panel blocking the tank fitting, and photograph the hose in place so you can duplicate the routing later.
Push both clamps well back along the hose. Break the varnish bond by twisting the hose at each barb rather than pulling on it, and keep a rag at the tank end because the hose still holds fuel with the valve shut. When an end will not release, slit it lengthwise with a fresh blade and peel it off the fitting; giving up on a hose you are discarding is far better than distorting a barb you plan to reuse.
Installing and Testing the Replacement
Cut the new hose to the same length as the piece that came off. Seat each end fully onto its barb, dry, and keep every lubricant away from the fittings — grease, oil, and silicone all prevent a proper seal and give fuel a path to work past the clamp. Hot water is the only assistance a tight hose end should need. Position new clamps just behind the bead at each fitting, tighten them evenly enough to grip without cutting the rubber, and route the hose back through its original clips, clear of the exhaust and the shift linkage.
Turn the fuel valve on and stand there watching both connections for a full minute under good light with a dry rag ready, because a gravity-feed seep is often slow to appear. If everything stays dry, start the engine, idle it for several minutes, blip the throttle, and inspect once more. Reinstall the seat and take a short loop near home before trusting the machine with a full day of work. One last item: the fuel valve on this Rancher contains a strainer screen, so if fuel delivery still feels marginal after a clean hose install, check that screen before digging into the carburetor.
