Replacing the Fuel Line on a 2013 Rancher 420 2x4 ES

Owners of the 2013 Rancher 420 2x4 ES have the last of a straightforward, low-technology fuel system, and that simplicity makes hose replacement a job almost any rider can handle in an afternoon. Fuel travels from the tank through a manual valve, down a short length of hose, and into the carburetor under gravity alone. There is no pump to depressurize and no pressurized coupler to release, which is the situation you would face on the injected Ranchers built after this generation.

The Last Carbureted Years of This Rancher

Understanding the layout is worth a minute. The petcock at the tank stops fuel flow completely when you rotate it to off, so you have a proper shut off rather than needing line-clamping pliers. The hose ends are plain barbs held by spring clips or worm-gear clamps. And the carburetor has a float bowl drain screw, which lets you empty the bowl into a container instead of pouring it over the engine cases when you disconnect the line.

Access is reasonable too. As a two-wheel-drive machine, this Rancher has no front differential or extra driveline hardware crowding the space between the valve and the carburetor, so the run is short and the clips are easy to reach once the seat and the covering panel are off. Keep the line's original clearance from the exhaust and from the electric shift wiring in mind as you work.

Hose Degradation Explained

Rubber fuel line stays supple thanks to softening compounds mixed into it, and those compounds slowly leave under a decade of engine heat. What is left behind is a stiff, thin wall that no longer absorbs vibration, so cracks start at the bends where stress concentrates. In dry regions the hardening arrives sooner, since low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose from the outside in.

Meanwhile, ethanol-blended fuel left standing during an idle stretch of the year absorbs water and slowly attacks the inner liner. That leaves a soft interior surface that can shed fine material and form gum deposits, and on a carbureted machine those deposits have a short path to the jets. The combination of exterior hardening and interior breakdown is why age deserves more weight than appearance when you decide whether to replace.

Catching a Failing Line Early

Give the machine a real look, not a glance:

  • Check the floor where the quad parks for a wet patch or a dried stain
  • Trust a persistent gasoline smell around the tank and carburetor even before you find fuel
  • Pinch the hose along its length and note any section that feels hard instead of springy
  • Look for surface crazing at the bends and a chalky finish on rubber that was once glossy
  • Watch for grit packed into a dark ring at either fitting, which marks repeated weeping and drying
  • Take bogging on climbs, surging, or an engine acting starved as running evidence

Since this system relies on gravity instead of pressure, leaks tend to drip visibly rather than atomizing and evaporating the way they can on a pressurized injected line. That makes early detection easier if you actually look.

Prep and Safety at the Bench

Assemble fuel-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps or spring clips, gloves, eye protection, an approved fuel container, a drain pan, a screwdriver for the float bowl drain, a short hose to direct that drain, hand tools for the seat and fender fasteners, a razor knife, and clean rags.

Then handle the gasoline properly. Its vapor is heavier than air, which means it sinks and travels along the floor toward pilot lights, chargers, and other low ignition sources rather than dispersing upward. Work outside or with the door fully open, remove anything that sparks or burns from the space, keep an extinguisher within reach, and carry used rags outside when you are done.

Removing the Old Fuel Line

Turn the fuel valve to off and let the engine run until it stalls, which empties the hose and much of the carburetor. Remove the seat and the panel covering the tank and carburetor. Slip your short hose onto the float bowl drain fitting, run it into the container, and loosen the drain screw so the bowl empties cleanly, then snug the screw back down.

Slide both clamps well back along the hose before you open a joint. Twist the hose gently on each barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling against it, and if an end has cemented itself in place, cut it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away so the fitting takes no strain. Photograph the routing and every clip before the hose is completely out, since getting the new line back into its original path is what keeps it away from hot and moving parts.

Installing and Clamping

Trim the replacement to match the original length. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, working dry throughout. Nothing lubricated belongs on a fuel fitting, because grease or silicone breaks the seal between rubber and metal and gives fuel a route out from under the clamp. Warm the hose end in hot water for a few seconds if it resists.

Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without crushing the hose wall. Then work the line back into its clips so it clears the header and the wiring with a little slack but no loops that can chafe.

Checking Both Ends for Leaks

Open the fuel valve and let gravity fill the line and float bowl before you crank the engine. Watch both fittings for a full minute, then wipe each with a clean rag and study it for a damp streak. Start the machine, let it idle for several minutes, and inspect the joints again once the hose has warmed and settled.

Before the bodywork goes back on, confirm the valve shuts off completely and check the small screen behind it, because a new hose will not fix a restriction upstream of the line. With both connections dry and the hose properly routed, this Rancher is ready for whatever the property needs next.
