Nothing on a 2013 Outlander MAX 400 fails more quietly than the fuel line. It does not squeal, it does not throw a code, and it usually gives up on a hot day with the tank full. Understanding what is happening to that rubber over the years is the best defense, because it turns an unpredictable roadside failure into a maintenance item you replace on your own schedule.
What Years of Fuel and Heat Do to Rubber
Fuel hose degrades chemically from two directions. On the outer surface, engine heat cycling combined with sunlight and general weather exposure drives the plasticizers out of the rubber compound. Those compounds are what make hose flexible, and once they are gone the wall stiffens until it can no longer move with a chassis that flexes on every rut and root. What begins as fine surface checking works its way inward until it becomes a crack that passes fuel.
The inner surface suffers separately. Ethanol-blended gasoline holds water in suspension and slowly attacks the liner, softening it from the bore outward, while fuel that sits and oxidizes leaves gum deposits that either restrict flow or break loose and lodge in the carburetor's small passages. Riders in dry, arid regions see the exterior hardening arrive years earlier, since low humidity constantly pulls moisture from the hose. This is why a machine with few hours that sat for a couple of seasons can need hose before one that works every weekend.
Catching It Before You Are Stranded
A failing line gives you warning if you are paying attention. Watch for a wet spot or a puddle under the machine after it has been parked, since a gravity fed system runs at low enough pressure to drip rather than mist. Trust a gasoline smell that lingers in the garage even when you cannot find the source. Inspect the hose closely at bends and fittings for hairline cracks, a chalky texture, or a dried, dirt-collecting ring where fuel has seeped and evaporated. Pinch a few sections; hardened rubber creaks and stays deformed. Add running behavior to the picture, because a restricted or partly collapsed line produces bogging under load, lean surging at cruise, and stumbles that mimic an empty tank.
How This Model Delivers Fuel
The Rotax 400 single in this MAX is carbureted, and everything about the procedure follows from that. Fuel travels from the tank through a shutoff valve to the carburetor under gravity alone, so closing that valve genuinely stops the flow, and the carburetor's float bowl drain screw lets you empty the bowl into a container in a controlled way. The connections at both ends are plain barbs secured with clamps. Fuel injected Outlanders differ at every one of those points: they have no valve, an electric pump inside the tank keeps the supply line pressurized, some fittings are self-locking quick-connect couplers that take no clamp, and the pump fuse has to come out so the engine can stall and bleed the pressure before a fitting is opened. Assembling Tools and Working Safely

Getting the Old Line Out of the Frame
Close the fuel valve first, then back out the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty into your container. Pull the seat and any panel that blocks the view of the run from tank to carburetor, and slide a catch pan underneath the work area. Photograph the routing and every clip before you disturb it, because the 4x4 driveline on this MAX carries the hose past front differential hardware and adds frame clearance points a two-wheel-drive layout would not have, and the two-up chassis lengthens the run modestly.
Slide the clamps back along the hose rather than struggling with them at the fittings. If varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of twisting, which spares the carburetor inlet and the valve outlet. A rag under each joint catches the fuel still sitting in the low spots.
Fitting Fresh Hose Without Lubricant
Cut the new piece to match the original length so the line neither drags on a frame tube nor pulls at its ends when the chassis works. Push each end onto its barb dry, driving it fully past the raised bead. Keep grease, oil, and silicone away from the fittings entirely: lubricant stops the rubber from gripping and gives fuel a channel to creep out along. Hot water for a few seconds softens a tight hose end and leaves no residue behind. Position new clamps just behind the bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without biting into the hose. If an inline filter goes in as well, observe its flow arrow and support it so its weight does not hang on the line, then thread everything back through the original clips well clear of exhaust heat.
The Final Leak Check
Tighten the drain screw, open the fuel valve, and let gravity fill the line and bowl while you watch both connections closely. Wipe them dry with a clean rag and check again, because fresh seepage shows up far better on clean rubber. Start the engine and let it idle several minutes, inspecting a third time with the machine hot and vibrating, then take a slow lap and look underneath one last time. Since the filter on this carbureted MAX 400 sits inline where you can see it rather than inside the tank as it does on injected models, changing hose and filter together leaves the whole fuel path fresh.
