On a 2012 Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS those clues deserve prompt attention, because this machine runs electronic fuel injection rather than a carburetor. There is no petcock under the tank to shut off flow, and the hose feeding the throttle body belongs to a pressurized circuit fed by a pump mounted inside the tank. Tackled in the right sequence, replacing that hose is a manageable afternoon job for anyone comfortable pulling plastics.
Reading the Early Warning Signs
A fuel line rarely fails without giving notice. Walk around the Grizzly with a flashlight and look for the following:
- A wet patch or small puddle beneath the center of the chassis after the quad has been parked overnight
- A strong fuel odor that lingers around the seat area, usually most noticeable in the first minutes after shutdown
- Fine cracks, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels stiff and glassy when you squeeze it
- Dust caked into a dark ring at a fitting, which is the signature of fuel seeping and drying repeatedly
- An engine that bogs under load, hesitates when you snap the throttle, or feels starved as though the tank were nearly empty
Injected machines complicate the puddle test. A pinhole on the pressure side can atomize fuel into a fine mist that evaporates before it ever reaches the ground, so a strong smell with no visible drip still points to a leak. Trust your nose here as much as your eyes, and check again with the key cycled on so the pump has pressurized the line.
What Actually Kills a Fuel Hose
Rubber fuel hose is a consumable. Over years of service it loses the plasticizers that keep it soft, and the wall slowly transitions from pliable to brittle. Every heat cycle from the 686cc single accelerates that change, and the constant chassis flex the Grizzly sees on rutted two track works those hardened spots into genuine cracks. Owners in arid regions notice this sooner than most, since low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in.
Ethanol blended pump gas attacks from the opposite side. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and gradually degrades the inner liner, softening and swelling it while the exterior continues to stiffen. Fuel left sitting for months makes this worse, gumming the passages and shedding fine debris downstream. A line can look perfectly acceptable from the outside and still be crumbling internally, which is why age matters as much as appearance on a machine well over a decade old.
Tools, Parts, and a Word About Vapor
Lay everything out before you open a single fitting:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils in seconds
- A sealed metal or fuel rated plastic container for captured gasoline
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- Fresh clamps in the style your Grizzly uses, plus line clamping pliers to pinch off any low pressure section given the absence of a petcock
- Basic hand tools for the seat, side panels, and any hose retaining clips
- Shop rags, a sharp razor blade, and a small flat blade screwdriver
Do this work outdoors or with the garage door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a fan moving air down low protects you far better than a cracked window overhead. Keep heaters, grinders, work lights with hot bulbs, and anything else that sparks well clear of the area, and disconnect the battery negative before the first fitting comes loose.
Bleeding Off Pressure and Freeing the Old Line
Start by relieving system pressure. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the block beneath the seat, crank the engine until it stalls or refuses to fire, then switch the key off and disconnect the battery. Remove the seat and the center bodywork to expose the tank and follow the hose forward toward the throttle body, photographing every clip and clearance point as you go.
Slide a drain pan under the connection and drape a rag over it. Even a depressurized line holds residual fuel that will run down the frame. Worm gear and spring clamps should be slid well back along the hose before you attempt to twist anything free. If your machine uses a locking quick connect at the tank, squeeze the release tabs squarely and pull straight off rather than levering sideways, since those collars grow brittle with age. Old hose often bonds to the barb with varnish, and slitting it lengthwise with a razor is far safer than yanking on a plastic fitting.
Because this is a 4x4 chassis, the line routes past front differential hardware and extra crossmembers that a two wheel drive quad does not carry. Note exactly which side of each brace the hose passes on before it comes fully free.
Threading the New Hose Into Place
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Extra length looks harmless on the bench but will chafe against the frame or foul steering components once the plastics go back on. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and do the work dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a path to creep past the sealing surface, so keep them off the fittings entirely. A quick dip of the hose end in hot water softens it enough to slide on without help.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly rather than crushing the hose. Where a self locking quick connect is used, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to verify it has latched, since no clamp belongs there. Return the line to its original guides so it stays away from the front driveline and exhaust heat.
Confirming a Dry Repair
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and builds pressure, which lets you inspect both joints while everything is still dry and easy to read. Wipe each fitting with a clean rag, then fire the Grizzly and watch again at idle for a minute or two before the bodywork returns.
One last platform note: the fuel filter on this injected Grizzly lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly instead of sitting inline where you can reach it. New hose does nothing for a restricted filter, so if the bogging or hesitation survives a clean install, the in tank unit is the next place to look.
