Changing the Fuel Line on a 2012 Yamaha Grizzly 700 4x4

There is one move that separates a tidy fuel line job on a 2012 Grizzly 700 from a soaked garage floor, and it happens before a wrench touches a fitting. This machine is fuel injected, its pump lives inside the tank, and the hose stays pressurized after shutdown. Bleed that pressure down first and the rest of the replacement is honestly easy work.

Bleeding Down Before Anything Else

Lift the seat and find the fuse box. Pull the fuel pump fuse, then start the engine and let it run until it coughs and dies on its own, which empties the pressurized side of the circuit. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable so the pump cannot be energized while your hands are in there. Only then should you start taking plastics off.

This step exists because there is no petcock on this Grizzly. Riders coming from carbureted quads instinctively reach under the tank for a valve to shut off, and on an injected machine there is nothing to find. Line clamping pliers are the substitute for that valve once the circuit is open, letting you pinch the hose closed to stop siphoning from the tank while you work.

Removing the Old Hose Without Damaging Fittings

With the seat and side panels off, follow the hose from the pump plate on the tank back to the throttle body. Slip a drain pan underneath and cover each joint with a rag before you open it, because a bled line still carries residual fuel that will run out the moment it is free.

Walk the clamps down the hose and away from the barbs first. If the pump plate uses a plastic quick connect, compress its release tabs squarely and draw the coupler straight off the nipple. Do not lever it sideways — a collar this old has grown brittle and will crack. Hose that has varnished itself onto a barb should be rotated gently to break the bond; if it still refuses, slit it lengthwise with a sharp knife and peel it off rather than prying on the fitting, which is far more expensive than the hose.

As the original comes out, note its exact path. This is a four wheel drive chassis, so front differential hardware and extra frame structure create clearance points and clip locations that a 2WD machine does not share. Photograph them while everything is still in place.

The Case of the Hardening Hose

Understanding why the hose failed keeps you from repeating the problem. Rubber fuel hose contains plasticizers that keep it supple, and heat cycling drives those compounds out over years. What remains is stiff and glassy, unable to flex with the machine, and it starts to split at bends and clamp shoulders. Arid climates accelerate the process, because low humidity dries the hose wall from the outside faster.

Ethanol blended fuel works the opposite direction. Alcohol in pump gas attracts moisture and slowly attacks the inner liner, gumming and softening it, and a Grizzly left sitting with a partial tank through an off season gets the full effect. The result is a hose that can look acceptable on the outside while shedding material inside, which is why calendar age is a legitimate reason to replace plumbing on a machine of this vintage.

Warning Signs You Should Not Ride Past

  • Fuel pooling on the skid plate or dripping to the floor after the quad has been parked
  • A strong gasoline smell around the center of the machine, worst in the first minutes after shutdown
  • Cracks, crazing, or a chalky bloom visible on the hose surface
  • A hose that feels hard and brittle rather than pliable when pinched
  • Bogging, hesitation, or a lean surge under load, as though the engine were running out of fuel
  • A dust caked ring around a fitting, the telltale of fuel weeping and evaporating over time

On an injected machine a pressure side pinhole often atomizes rather than dripping, so a smell with no visible puddle still warrants investigation.

What to Buy and How to Stay Safe

You need hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not the low pressure hose intended for carburetor feed. Add new clamps in the right size, a quick connect release tool if your pump plate uses a locking coupler, line clamping pliers, nitrile gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container, a drain pan, rags, basic hand tools, and a sharp knife.

Now the genuinely important part. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles and spreads at floor level rather than rising out an open window. A closed garage with a water heater or shop heater running is a real hazard while a fuel line is open. Work outside if the weather cooperates, or with the door fully up and a fan moving air across the floor. Shut off every pilot light and heating element, keep an extinguisher nearby, and carry fuel soaked rags outside instead of piling them in a bin.

Fitting the Replacement and Confirming It Is Dry

Cut the new hose to the same length as the old one, no longer. A hose cut generous will sag against a frame tube and chafe, or drift toward the exhaust where heat will finish it early. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely off the fittings; lubricant on a sealing surface hands pressurized fuel a path to creep out. If a hose end fights you, dip it in hot water for a few seconds to soften it.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly rather than crushing the hose. Self locking quick connects get no clamp at all: press until the collar clicks, then pull firmly to verify it has latched. Route the hose back through every original clip so it sits clear of the front driveline and hot surfaces.

Reinstall the fuel pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the circuit so you can inspect both joints while everything is still dry, which makes even a slow weep obvious. Wipe the fittings clean, look and feel for seepage, then start the engine and inspect again at idle. Several minutes of dry running earns you the right to put the plastics back on. One last note: because the filter on this Grizzly resides inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the hose, persistent starvation after a clean install points at that module next.
