Nothing ruins a weekend faster than the smell of gasoline under your 2012 Grizzly 550 4x4 Power Steering. Fuel hose is a wear item, and after this many seasons the piece running from the tank to the throttle body has earned replacement whether or not it is dripping yet. The work is manageable at home once you understand what kind of system you are opening.
Symptoms That Point at the Hose
Start with what you can observe without tools. A stain or wet spot on the skid plate, a puddle on clean concrete after the machine sits, or a dark ring of dust stuck to a damp fitting all indicate fuel is escaping. A persistent gasoline odor around the quad is just as telling, and on this Grizzly it often appears before any visible drip because pressurized fuel escaping a marginal joint atomizes quickly.
How the engine behaves adds the rest of the picture. Bogging as you load the throttle, a lean stumble at part throttle, or the feeling that the tank is running low when the gauge disagrees can all trace back to compromised supply plumbing. Run the hose through your fingers with everything off. Rubber that feels rigid, sounds crunchy when squeezed, or shows fine surface checking has stopped sealing reliably against its barbs.
Chemistry and Climate Working Against Rubber
The hardening you feel is not imaginary. Repeated engine heat cycles bake the flexible compounds out of the hose wall, leaving material that is stiffer and slightly smaller than when it was new. Dry regional air makes it happen faster by pulling moisture out of the rubber, which is why quads in arid country show cracking sooner than identical machines in humid climates.
The fuel inside is no friend either. Ethanol blends attract water and gradually break down the inner liner, softening it while the exterior turns brittle, and material that sloughs off heads downstream toward the injector. Fuel that sits through a long stretch of inactivity evaporates and leaves varnish behind, gluing hose to fitting and masking a slow seep beneath dried gum. Neither process announces itself, which is why replacing on age makes sense.
No Fuel Valve Means a Different Approach
Do not hunt for a petcock on this one. The 2012 Grizzly 550 runs electronic fuel injection with the pump mounted inside the tank, so there is no manual shutoff and the supply line remains pressurized after shutdown. You relieve that pressure deliberately as the first step of the job. It also means your replacement must be hose rated for injection pressure rather than the low-pressure hose intended for carbureted machines, and that the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump module instead of an inline element you can reach.
Bench Setup and Ventilation
- Rubber or nitrile gloves plus eye protection
- A drain pan and an approved sealed container for the fuel you collect
- Injection-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
- New clamps in the correct style, and a quick-disconnect tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers, filling in for the fuel valve this machine does not have
- Sockets and drivers for the seat, plastics, and tank hardware, and a stack of clean rags
Handle the gasoline side with respect. Vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level under the quad rather than drifting out an open window. Work outdoors or open the garage fully and run a fan low to move air across the floor. No flames, no sparks, no hot incandescent lamps, and keep a fire extinguisher on the floor beside you rather than across the shop.
Removal Without Breaking Fittings
Pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine until it quits, which bleeds off most of the residual pressure. Key off, negative battery cable disconnected. Remove the seat and enough bodywork to see the whole hose run rather than working by feel.
Slide the pan into place and lay a rag over each joint before opening it, since a depressurized line still holds fuel. Walk clamps well back down the hose first. For a quick-connect coupler, squeeze both release tabs evenly and pull straight off with no rocking — those collars grow brittle with age and snap when levered. If varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, cut it lengthwise with a razor and peel it rather than twisting and risking the fitting.
Record the routing before the old hose is out. As a 4x4 with power steering, this Grizzly packs a front differential and steering hardware into the forward chassis, and the hose path deliberately clears them. Photos of every clip and guide save time and prevent chafing on reassembly.
Putting the New Line in Place
Trim the new hose to the same length as the piece you removed. Extra length finds hot exhaust or a sharp frame edge; too little pulls at the fittings. Seat both ends fully onto their barbs, dry, until they bottom against the shoulders. Keep grease, oil, and silicone completely off the sealing surfaces, because lubricant is exactly what gives pressurized fuel a route out from under a clamp. Warm water will soften a tight hose end if needed.
Install new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly — firm, not crushing. A self-locking quick-connect gets pushed home until it clicks, then tugged to verify engagement, and takes no clamp at all. Route the hose back through its original clips exactly as it came out.
Checking Your Work Under Pressure
Reinstall the pump fuse and Reconnect the battery, then turn the key on, let the pump finish priming, and turn it off. Repeat several times without starting. This static pressure test is the best chance you get to spot a leak, because any moisture on brand-new dry hose stands out immediately. Inspect both joints between cycles.
With nothing weeping, start the engine and let it idle for several minutes, rechecking with a clean rag and smelling the air near the tank and throttle body. Only after a clean run should the plastics and seat go back on. If the Grizzly still feels starved after a confirmed dry install, the in-tank filter and pump assembly are where to look next, since no serviceable filter exists on the hose you just replaced.
