A hardened fuel hose can leave a 2012 Grizzly 450 EPS stumbling on a climb one weekend and dripping onto the garage floor the next. This model is carbureted, which puts the whole repair in friendly territory: the line is unpressurized, gravity feeds it from the tank, and a hand-operated fuel valve gives you a real shutoff before you open anything. The power steering unit up front simply means you plan your access a little more deliberately than on a machine without it.

Symptoms That Justify the Job

  • A small puddle or wet streak under the frame after the quad has sat with fuel on
  • A gasoline smell that refuses to clear from an enclosed garage
  • Hairline cracking near the hose bends or a hardened, glassy feel when pinched
  • Bogging under load, lean surging, or the engine behaving as though it is out of gas
  • Grit collected in a damp ring at either fitting where fuel has been seeping

Gravity feed means head pressure from a full tank is what pushes fuel past a marginal joint. Fill it, park level with the valve open, and check again an hour later rather than judging the hose on a low tank.

The Chemistry Behind a Failing Line

Fuel line rubber loses its softening compounds year by year, and the wall that remains is stiff enough to fracture at the bends instead of flexing. Heat radiating off the 450's engine accelerates that hardening, and dry, arid conditions speed it further by pulling moisture out of the hose from the outside surface inward. A quad parked in a shed ages its hose almost as fast as one that works every weekend.

Ethanol-blended gasoline handles the interior. It breaks down the inner liner and draws water into the fuel, and long idle stretches with fuel standing in the line leave gum and varnish that narrow the passage. Because those two mechanisms move in opposite directions, a hose can look presentable and still be crumbling internally, which is why years in service is the honest measure on a machine of this age.

Tools, Materials, and a Word on Fumes

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves plus safety glasses
  • A lidded fuel-rated container and a low drain pan
  • Gasoline-rated replacement hose sized to the original inside diameter
  • Fresh spring clips or small worm-gear clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers for holding back fuel at an open fitting
  • Flat screwdriver, socket set, sharp razor blade, clean rags

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects along the floor, exactly where water heater pilots, battery chargers, and power tools live. Work in open air or with the overhead door fully raised, shut off every ignition source in the room, keep a fire extinguisher within reach instead of across the shop, and cap the fuel container as soon as draining is done.

Coaxing the Old Hose Off the Fittings

Turn the fuel valve off, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through its overflow tube into the pan. Remove the seat and enough front bodywork to reach both ends of the run cleanly, which on the power steering model means working around the EPS assembly and its wiring rather than through it. Photograph the routing and every clip before anything is disturbed.

Slide the clamps well back along the hose, then break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist and pull the hose straight off. If it has fused solid, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of levering, because the valve spigot and carburetor inlet both bend easily. As a 4WD chassis, this Grizzly routes its line past front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers, so note each clearance point on the way out.

Installing the Replacement Line

Use the old hose as a template and cut the new one to the same length. Anything longer sags into the frame, chafes a crossmember, or drifts toward exhaust heat, and all three cut the life of a part you just bought. Push each end fully onto its barb working completely dry — grease, oil, and silicone on a sealing surface hand fuel a path around the clamp that tightening cannot close. A few seconds in hot water is the right way to soften a tight end.

Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without biting into the rubber. Return the hose to its factory clips well clear of the steering hardware and front drive, and swap a dark or sediment-loaded inline filter while access is open, keeping the flow arrow pointed toward the carburetor.

Leak Check and Final Inspection

Open the valve and let the machine stand several minutes with a full tank so both joints take real head pressure. Wipe each connection with a clean light-colored rag and look for amber staining, which appears well before any drop forms. With the static test clean, start the engine and inspect again at idle, since vibration and heat reveal seepage a still check misses.

Ride a short loop, shut down, and give both ends one final look before reinstalling the plastics. A fresh hose corrects delivery but not metering, so if the bogging that sent you here survives a new line and a clean filter, the float level and jets inside the carburetor are where to look next.
