Fuel hose is the cheapest part on a 2012 Grizzly 350 IRS and one of the few that can strand you outright. This machine uses a carburetor rather than fuel injection, so the whole delivery system amounts to a tank, a fuel valve you turn by hand, a short rubber line, and the carburetor inlet. Nothing is pressurized, there is no in-tank pump to work around, and the entire job asks for basic hand tools and about an hour of unhurried attention.
Why Rubber Fuel Line Has an Expiration Date
Hose failure comes down to chemistry more than mileage. The compounds that keep fuel line flexible leach out steadily over the years, leaving a wall that is hard, brittle, and prone to cracking wherever it bends. Heat radiating off the engine cycles that hardening along faster, and the constant shake of a utility quad in rough terrain turns micro-fissures into weeping splits. Machines kept in dry, high-desert conditions age their hose noticeably quicker, because low humidity draws moisture out of the rubber and stiffens it from the surface in.
Ethanol in modern pump gas works the opposite direction, breaking down the inner liner and pulling water into the fuel. Long idle stretches with fuel standing in the line let gum and varnish build up inside as well, which narrows the passage and starves the carburetor. Between the two, a decade-old hose on this Grizzly is living on borrowed time regardless of how many hours are on the odometer.
Assembling Tools & Handling Gasoline Sensibly
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
- An approved fuel container with a lid, plus a drain pan for spills
- Fuel-rated replacement hose sized to the original inside diameter
- Fresh clamps — spring clips or small worm-gear bands
- Line-clamping pliers for pinching off the hose mid-job
- Screwdriver, socket set, razor blade, and a stack of clean rags
Set up outside or with the shop door wide open. Gasoline vapor sinks and gathers at floor level, where a water heater pilot, a battery charger, or a dropped extension cord can find it. Kill every ignition source in the room, keep an extinguisher beside you, and never drain fuel into an open bucket you plan to leave sitting.
Warning Signs Worth Acting On
Catching a failing hose early beats discovering it on the trail. Watch for:
- Fresh fuel staining or a small puddle beneath the tank area after parking
- A persistent gas smell around the machine, strongest with a full tank
- Visible surface cracking or a hardened, inflexible feel when squeezed
- Engine bogging, surging, or dying under throttle as if starved
- Damp grit collecting at either hose end where fuel has seeped and dried
Because the 350 feeds by gravity, leaks are worst when the tank is near full and the valve is open. Test under those conditions instead of judging a dry hose on an empty tank.
Removing the Tired Hose
Rotate the fuel valve to off, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty into your pan through the overflow tube. Pull the seat and whatever front bodywork blocks access to the tank outlet and carburetor inlet. Take pictures of the routing, including every clip and the path the hose takes past the frame.
Ease each clamp back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. A gentle twist breaks the hardened bond at the barb; steady pull straight off does the rest. When a hose refuses to budge, run a razor down its length and peel it away rather than prying at the spigot, since the valve outlet and carburetor inlet both bend easily. This is a 4WD machine with independent rear suspension, so the hose routes around additional front differential hardware and frame structure that a two-wheel-drive quad does not carry — note those clearance points as the old line comes free.
Installing the Replacement
Match the new hose to the original length exactly. A line cut long will sag against the frame or drift toward hot exhaust, and both outcomes shorten its life. Slide each end all the way onto its barb until it seats, working completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place here; lubricant on a barb creates a leak path that clamp tension cannot close. If the hose fights you, dip the end in hot water for a few seconds to soften it.
Set clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly — firm enough to seal, not so tight that the band bites into the rubber. Reseat the hose in its factory clips so it stays away from the steering and front driveline, and swap the inline filter if it looks dark or gritty, keeping the flow arrow pointed toward the carburetor.
Confirming a Dry System
Turn the valve back on and wait. Give the fuel several minutes to work down the line and pressure the joints under a full tank, then wipe both connections with a light-colored rag and look for staining rather than dripping. Start the engine once the static check is clean and inspect again at idle, when heat and vibration expose seepage a still test hides.
Ride a short loop, shut down, and check one final time before the plastics go back on. If the machine still stumbles with a new hose and clear filter, the trouble has moved downstream to the float bowl and jets, not the line you just replaced.
