Three complaints bring owners to this job: a crack they spotted while washing the quad, a puddle they found on the floor, and an engine that bogs when it used to pull. On a 2012 Grizzly 350 4x4 all three usually resolve to one length of rubber hose, and replacing it is well within reach for anyone who can handle a screwdriver and a drain pan responsibly.

Cracks, Puddles, and a Bogging Engine

Give the fuel path a real inspection and look for these specifics:

  • A wet spot or outright puddle on the ground beneath the machine after it has been parked
  • A gasoline smell near the tank that lingers whether the valve is open or closed
  • Hairline crazing, deeper cracks, or a bleached chalky surface on the hose
  • A hose that feels hard and glassy when squeezed, or one swollen soft at the fittings
  • Bogging under throttle, stumbling on a climb, or lean surging like the tank is running out
  • A grime ring at a barb, the dried evidence of slow seepage over many rides

The running problems get misdiagnosed constantly. A line restricted by varnish or partially collapsed internally still feeds a smooth idle, then starves the carburetor as soon as the engine asks for volume, which on a working 4x4 means right in the middle of a load or a hill.

Age and Fuel Chemistry

Two independent processes retire a fuel hose. Externally, heat cycling from the engine drives the plasticizers out of the rubber. As they leave, the hose stiffens and stops flexing with the chassis, so vibration turns light surface crazing into genuine cracks at the sharpest bend. Dry, arid air compounds it by wicking moisture from the hose wall, which is why quads in low-humidity regions harden their lines faster than their hours would predict.

Internally, ethanol-blended gasoline goes after the liner. Alcohol attracts water into the fuel and degrades the inner surface, softening it and releasing fine material that travels toward the carburetor jets. Fuel left standing during quiet months leaves gum and varnish as the volatile fractions evaporate, narrowing the bore and gluing the hose onto its barbs. That is why a hose from this era frequently has to be cut off rather than pulled.

Carburetor, Valve, and Float Bowl Drain

The 2012 Grizzly 350 is carbureted. A manual fuel valve threads into the tank, one hose feeds the carburetor inlet by gravity, and the float bowl at the bottom of the carburetor has a drain screw. Nothing holds pressure, so the pressure-relief routine that a fuel-injected quad requires — pulling a pump fuse, cranking until the engine dies, sometimes releasing a plastic quick-connect collar — simply does not apply. You will not need line-clamping pliers either, because the valve does that job mechanically.

As a four-wheel-drive machine, this 350 carries a front differential and drive shaft under the frame. The hose therefore takes a marginally longer path and passes an extra clip or clearance point compared with a 2x4. Trace the route and note each retainer before the old hose comes free.

The Short List of Tools

Have this on the bench before you begin:

  • Fuel-rated hose in the original inside diameter, cut long for trimming
  • New clamps or spring clips, since aged clips no longer grip properly
  • Nitrile gloves and eye protection
  • A sealed approved fuel container and a shallow drip pan
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets for the seat and plastics, and a razor knife
  • Rags and a work light

The gasoline itself is the hazard worth planning around. Fuel vapor is heavier than air and runs downhill to floor level, exactly where water heater pilots, battery chargers, and low outlets are found. Work outdoors when you can, and inside, open the door completely and shut off anything that sparks or cycles. Cap drained fuel right away and keep an extinguisher one step away.

Removing the Line Around the Front Driveline

Turn the valve to OFF. Take the seat and any obstructing panel off, position the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties through the overflow tube, and close it again. The hose is now nearly dry.

Slide the clamp at the carburetor end well up the hose. Give the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, then walk it off the barb with steady pressure. Rubber that has hardened onto the fitting should be slit lengthwise and peeled away with the blade, which spares the aluminum inlet from prying damage. Repeat at the valve. On this 4x4, work the hose out of each clip in order and guide it past the front drive components rather than pulling it through in one motion. While the area is open, check the valve screen for sediment — that is the serviceable filter on a carbureted Grizzly, unlike an injected model where the filter lives inside the tank as part of the pump.

Dry Assembly and Clamp Position

Set the old hose against the new and cut square at the matching length. Extra hose creates problems instead of solving them: slack can migrate toward the front drive shaft or hot exhaust, and a raised loop can trap an air bubble in a gravity feed. Push each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, assembling everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray stay off the fittings entirely, because a lubricated barb will not seal and vibration gradually walks the hose off it. Soften a stiff new hose end in hot water for a few seconds.

Locate each clamp just behind the raised bead on the fitting and tighten evenly — firm enough to grip, not tight enough to bite. Route the line through the original clips with a continuous downhill run, verify clearance from the differential hardware and the exhaust, and pull on both ends to confirm they are captive.

Closing Out the Job

Open the fuel valve and watch for a full minute, with a clean dry rag beneath each connection. Any darkening on the rag means a fitting is not fully seated or a clamp needs another turn. Start the engine, let it idle while the bowl refills and things warm up, then inspect both joints and the concrete under the quad. Blip the throttle several times and take a final look with the light, including the section near the front driveline. With a dry install confirmed, reinstall the plastics and seat, wipe up spilled fuel, and dispose of the old hose and drained gasoline properly.
