A hardened fuel line is one of those failures that hides in plain sight. The hose looks like it always has until the day it splits at a barb, and then you are standing over a puddle wondering why a machine that ran fine last weekend will not idle. On a 2012 Grizzly 300 the fix is genuinely straightforward, and knowing exactly what kind of fuel system you are dealing with makes the whole afternoon easier.
Confirming What Feeds the Carburetor
The Grizzly 300 is a carbureted, air-cooled single with a mechanical fuel valve mounted at the tank. Fuel travels by gravity from that valve down a single rubber line to the carburetor inlet, and the carburetor holds a float bowl with a drain screw you can open by hand tool. That configuration matters at every step. On a fuel-injected quad you would be pulling a pump fuse, cranking the engine to bleed off residual pressure, and possibly fighting a plastic quick-connect collar. Here you turn a lever, drain a bowl, and loosen two clamps.
The 300 is a two-wheel-drive machine, which keeps the underside of the tank relatively open. Four-wheel-drive Grizzly models thread the line past front driveline hardware and extra clearance points; on this one the path is short and largely unobstructed once the seat and the left side panel are out of the way.
Age, Climate, and Ethanol Working Against You
Rubber fuel hose has a service life whether the machine gets ridden or not. The compound depends on plasticizers to stay soft, and heat cycling from the engine bakes them out year after year. What remains is a stiff tube that cracks at flex points instead of bending. Dry climates hurt more than wet ones here, because low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the surface inward.
Ethanol content in modern pump gas attacks the liner. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and softens the inner surface, so a line can be brittle outside and gummy inside at the same time. Fuel left standing during an off season leaves varnish behind as the light ends evaporate, and that residue both restricts flow and glues the hose to its fittings. None of this is unique to the Grizzly 300 — it is simply what happens to hose and gasoline over a decade.
Catching a Bad Line Before It Strands You
Give the fuel path a real look every few rides. Signals of a line on its way out include:
- Fuel odor around the tank that you notice before you even open the hood of the trailer
- A wet trail down the frame or a small puddle beneath the engine after parking
- Fine cracks in the hose surface, especially where it bends near the valve
- A hose that feels hard as a pencil rather than pliable when squeezed
- An engine that bogs under throttle, surges, or runs lean as though the tank were nearly empty
Do not dismiss a faint smell with no visible drip. A pinhole at the top of the line can weep just enough to evaporate before it reaches the floor, and it will still grow into a real leak.
Tools, Fuel Handling, and Ventilation
What you want on the bench:
- Replacement fuel line in the correct inside diameter for the 300, sized generously and trimmed to fit
- Fresh clamps or spring clips, since reused clips lose tension
- Rubber gloves, safety glasses, and plenty of rags
- An approved fuel container and a drip tray
- Screwdrivers, pliers, and sockets for the seat and side panel fasteners
- A sharp utility blade for cutting the new hose square and slitting the old one
Handle the gasoline like the hazard it is. Do this job outdoors or with the door wide open, because vapor sinks and pools around your feet. Keep pilot lights, chargers, and power tools out of the area, put the drained fuel straight into a sealed can, and never pour it down a drain.
Freeing the Old Line at Both Ends
Rotate the fuel valve to OFF. Place your drain pan below the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties into the pan through its overflow tube, then close it. Now the line holds almost nothing. Push the clamp at the carburetor inlet back along the hose, twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish seal, and work it off the barb. If it will not budge, slice it lengthwise and peel it away instead of prying against the aluminum fitting.
Do the same at the valve end. Before you install anything, look through the removed hose toward a light: a dark, sticky interior tells you how overdue the swap was. This is also the moment to inspect the valve screen for debris, a serviceable detail that carbureted Grizzly models offer and injected machines do not, since their filter lives inside the tank with the pump.
Installing the New Hose Dry
Lay the old line alongside the new one and match the length exactly. A line cut too long loops upward and can trap an air pocket in a gravity system, and it may rub the frame or drift toward hot engine surfaces. Press each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder. Apply nothing slippery — no grease, no assembly lube, no silicone. A lubricated fitting will not seal properly and lets the hose creep off under vibration. If the new rubber is stiff, soften the end in hot water for a few seconds.
Slide each clamp into place just past the fitting bead and tighten evenly. Route the hose through its original opening with a continuous downward slope, then tug both ends firmly to confirm they are locked on.
Restoring Flow and Confirming a Dry Install
Turn the valve to ON and give it a minute. Lay a clean white rag under each joint and check for the faintest color change. Start the Grizzly, let it idle until the bowl is full and the engine settles, then look again at both connections and at the ground. Rev it a few times to load the system and inspect once more. Once you have confirmed a dry install, replace the seat and bodywork, wash your hands well, and dispose of the old fuel and hose responsibly before your next ride.
