Everything about this repair on a 2012 KingQuad 750AXi hinges on one step that comes before all the others: getting the pressure out of the fuel system. This 722cc single is injected, an electric pump sits inside the tank, and the delivery hose is still live after the key goes off. Open a fitting on a pressurized line and you will spend the next hour cleaning up instead of wrenching.
Killing the Pressure First
Find the fuel pump fuse or relay and remove it, then crank the starter in short bursts until the engine stalls and refuses to fire again. Those few seconds of running consume the pressure the pump was holding, turning what would have been a spray into a controlled dribble. Switch the key off and disconnect the battery negative before any bodywork comes off. Since this platform has no petcock, keep line-clamping pliers within reach as a mechanical shutoff for any section that could still feed while a fitting is open.
Getting Clear on the Fuel System
The AXi badge means electronic fuel injection. On this KingQuad the pump, strainer, and filter element live together as one module dropped into the top of the fuel tank, which is why nothing along the visible hose can be unbolted or cleaned. That hose simply carries pressurized fuel from the tank module up to the throttle body. Being a 4x4, this machine also routes the line past front driveline hardware and extra frame structure that a two-wheel-drive quad would not carry, so plan on reaching around more than you expect. Trace the whole run with a flashlight and count the retaining clips before anything moves.
What Causes a Hose to Fail
Age, not mileage, does the work. Heat from the engine steadily drives the plasticizers out of the hose wall, and once the rubber has stiffened it no longer flexes with the chassis. Vibration crazes the surface, the crazing deepens, and eventually a crack opens into the bore. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate the whole process because ambient air constantly pulls moisture from the outer jacket, even on a machine that sits untouched. Inside the hose, ethanol-blended pump gas absorbs water and gradually attacks the inner liner, with the worst damage occurring on quads that spend months parked with fuel in the system. The end product is a hose that is hard and cracked outside while breaking down inside and releasing fine particles toward an injector orifice.
Symptoms and What They Mean
- Fuel odor around the tank and seat that persists after shutdown, while pressure is still trapped in the line
- A wet ring, dark patch, or slow drip on the skid plate or garage floor
- Fine cracking, a chalky surface, or a section that feels stiff and glassy when pinched
- A band of packed grime at a clamp, left behind by fuel that seeped and evaporated
- Bogging under throttle, a lean surge, or starvation symptoms that intensify as the tank empties
Remember that a pressure-side pinhole on an injected machine often atomizes fuel so thoroughly that nothing reaches the ground. A persistent smell over a dry floor is a real symptom on this KingQuad, not a false alarm.
Tools, Replacement Parts, and Ventilation
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan plus a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the factory inside diameter, not economy carburetor line
- Fresh clamps in the style fitted, and a quick-connect release tool if the pump flange uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers, standing in for the petcock this model does not have
- Sockets for the seat and side panels, a razor knife, a small flat blade, and plenty of rags
Take the ventilation point at face value. Gasoline vapor is denser than air and settles across the floor, exactly where a water heater pilot or shop heater pulls its air. Work outdoors when you can. Inside, open the overhead door fully so air circulates at ground level, shut down every flame and heating element in the building, and keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach.
Working the Old Line Out
With pressure gone and the battery disconnected, remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so both hose ends are accessible. Slide the pan under the work area and drape a rag over the first joint you plan to open, because a bled line still holds residual fuel that will run out.
Back each clamp well away from its fitting before pulling. Spring clamps release with a squeeze of the tabs; worm-gear clamps just loosen and slide aside. A plastic quick-connect at the pump outlet comes apart when you press its tabs squarely and pull straight off — keep everything square, since collars that have aged for years crack under sideways leverage. Hose that has varnished onto a barb should be twisted a quarter turn to break the bond, or split lengthwise with a razor and peeled off, which is far kinder to the throttle body spigot than a hard pull. Photograph the routing and every clearance point near the front differential before the hose is completely free.
Reassembly and the Final Check
Cut the new hose to the original length. Extra slack lets the line droop into the front driveline or rub a frame edge until it wears through. Push both ends fully onto their barbs until they bottom out, and install them dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all create a path for pressurized fuel to creep along a sealing surface, so keep every lubricant away from the fittings. A few seconds in hot water is the correct way to soften an end that resists.
Place fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten them evenly, snug without crushing the wall. A self-locking coupler on the tank side takes no clamp at all; push until it clicks and then tug firmly to confirm the latch has engaged. Reseat the hose in all its factory clips so it clears exhaust heat and rotating parts.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you inspect both joints while the engine is still off. Wipe them clean and watch for the faintest bead of fuel. Then start the engine, let it idle, blip the throttle, and check one more time with a fresh rag. Give it several leak-free minutes before the bodywork returns. If the machine still feels short on fuel after a dry install, the filter and strainer inside the tank module is the only other restriction in the delivery path and the logical next place to look.
