There is no valve under the tank to turn off, and the hose you are about to open belongs to a circuit that holds pressure after the key comes out.

Air Movement, Ignition Sources, and Skin Contact

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It sinks, spreads out along the floor, and stays there, which means the open window above your bench does nothing for you. A pilot light on a water heater across the garage, a running shop heater, or a spark when you plug in an extension cord are all realistic ignition sources at exactly that height. Work outdoors whenever the weather allows. If you are stuck inside, open the main door completely and set a fan on the ground pushing air out of the space rather than circulating it.

Protect yourself as well. Nitrile or rubber gloves keep gasoline from stripping the oils out of your skin and carrying additives through it, and eye protection matters because a fitting under residual pressure can spit when it releases. Catch every drop in a sealed metal or fuel rated container instead of letting it soak into concrete, keep saturated rags contained rather than piled up, and disconnect the battery negative cable as soon as you have relieved system pressure. None of this is optional detail; it is what separates a clean repair from a bad afternoon.

The Fuel Delivery Setup You Are Servicing

The 850 twin here is fed by electronic fuel injection. A pump module inside the tank pressurizes the supply hose, which routes forward to the rail feeding the injectors, with no manual shutoff valve at any point. The filter is built into that in tank pump assembly, so there is no inline canister to replace on the visible line, and the hose itself is a plain supply run. Fittings on this generation are either barbs held by conventional clamps or self locking quick connect couplers that require a release tool and no clamp at all, so confirm which you have before buying hardware. As a 4x4, this chassis carries front differential and driveline components near the routing, and the line works past a few extra clearance points because of them. The electric power steering unit and harness sit close to the steering post up front, so keep that wiring clear while the plastics are off.

Why That Hose Is Past Its Prime

Fuel line degrades from both surfaces on separate schedules. From the outside, the plasticizers that keep the wall pliable slowly migrate out, and the hose becomes stiff and glassy until heat cycling and chassis flex convert that stiffness into hairline cracks. Dry climate riding accelerates the whole sequence, since low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall and leaves the surface chalky sooner. From the inside, ethanol blended fuel attacks the liner as alcohol draws water into the fuel and breaks down the inner wall, with the damage concentrating whenever the machine sits and fuel stands motionless, gumming and varnishing the passage. Because those processes run independently, a hose can look fine while shedding material toward the injectors, so age is the more reliable guide.

Symptoms Worth Investigating

  • Fuel pooled on the skid plate, or a stain on the floor where the machine has been parked
  • A sharp gasoline odor near the seat, most obvious in the minute after shutdown while the rail is pressurized
  • Hairline cracking, a chalky texture, or a hardened glassy stretch you can feel by pinching the hose
  • Swelling at a fitting, or a caked dust ring left by fuel that has seeped and dried
  • Bogging under load, throttle hesitation, a lean stumble, or the feel of an empty tank that is not empty

On this platform a small pressure side leak often mists and evaporates rather than dripping, so treat a persistent smell as real evidence even with clean concrete underneath.

Removing the Old Hose

Take the pressure down first. Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank until the engine stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery. Remove the seat and side panels to expose the tank outlet and follow the run forward to the throttle body. Slide a drain pan into place and keep a rag wrapped over each fitting as you open it, because a bled line still holds fuel.

Move clamps well back along the hose before disturbing a joint. Press quick connect tabs squarely and pull straight off, avoiding any prying, since aged plastic collars crack easily. Twist a bonded hose gently on the barb to break the varnish rather than pulling hard, and if it refuses, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it clear instead of risking the fitting. Photograph the routing and every clip before the last section comes free so the new hose follows the same path around the front driveline hardware and the EPS harness.

Fitting the New Line and Testing It

Cut the replacement to the original length, since slack invites chafe or contact with a hot surface. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it bottoms out, and keep the barbs and hose ends dry. Grease, oil, and silicone create a leak path once the pump loads the circuit, so they stay out of the job entirely; hot water softens a stubborn end well enough to slide on. Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, stopping short of crushing the hose. On a self locking coupler, push until it clicks, tug to confirm engagement, and add no clamp. Return the line to every original clip.

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you inspect completely dry joints under real load. Wipe both connections and watch for beading. When they hold, start the engine and inspect at idle, then check once more after warm up when the hose has expanded slightly. Bodywork goes back on after several leak free minutes, and a short slow loop close to home is a sensible last step. If the machine still runs starved, the filter inside the tank with the pump is the next candidate.
