Of all the parts on a 2012 Brute Force 750 4x4i that can leave you walking, the fuel hose is the one you can rule out for the cost of a few dollars and an hour of your time. The 749cc V–twin is fed by an injection system, and that detail governs the order of operations from the very first step.
Spotting a Line About to Fail
Inspection is quick. Squeeze the hose along its length and pay attention to how it responds: sound rubber flattens under your fingers and springs back, while a line at the end of its life feels hard and keeps its shape. Bend it at a curve and look for hairline cracks opening on the outer surface, and check whether the black has gone chalky gray.
Examine the fittings next for a wet sheen or a ring of dust cemented in place by dried fuel, both of which indicate a slow weep. Then trust your nose, because a gasoline odor that lingers around the tank after shutdown often precedes any visible evidence on this machine. Running behavior fills in the rest: bogging when loaded, a stumble on quick throttle, or a lean feel at higher rpm all point at compromised fuel delivery.
The Injected Fuel System Under the Seat
There is no petcock on this Brute Force. An electric pump inside the tank pressurizes the line running to the throttle bodies, and that pressure survives shutdown, so a fitting opened carelessly sprays gasoline. The system has to be bled down on purpose before any tool touches a connection.
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stumbles and quits, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Line–clamping pliers cover the role the missing petcock would play, pinching a soft section closed to stop the tank siphoning while a joint is apart. It is also worth noting that this is a 4x4 with independent rear suspension, so the hose threads past front differential hardware and additional frame bracing on its way to the engine.
What Breaks Down in Old Hose
Fuel line stays pliable because of plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those compounds gradually leave the material over the years. The remaining wall stiffens and shrinks slightly, and it can no longer maintain a tight seal against a barb under a clamp. Heat cycling from the big twin drives the process forward every time the machine is parked and airflow stops.
Dry climates make it worse still, drawing moisture out of the hose wall and hardening it from the outside in. Working the opposite direction, ethanol–blended pump fuel attacks the inner liner, attracting water and degrading the inner surface, and the harm compounds when fuel sits stationary in the hose for months rather than flowing through it. That is how a hose passes a casual glance and still sends debris toward the injectors.
Prep, Protection, and Pressure Relief
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the correct inside diameter
- Clamps matched to the fittings present, plus a quick–disconnect tool if a locking coupler is fitted
- Line–clamping pliers, since no shutoff valve exists on this model
- Gloves and eye protection
- A shallow drain pan and a sealed, gasoline–rated container
- Screwdriver, pliers, sockets for the seat and panels, clean rags, a sharp blade
Ventilation carries the real risk in this job. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and gathers at floor height, precisely where your head will be while you reach under the fender, so airflow has to reach the ground. Move the machine outdoors or raise the overhead door completely, keep battery chargers and hot drop lights away, and shut off any appliance with a pilot flame in the building. Gloves stay on the entire time, because gasoline passes readily through skin.
Working the Old Line Loose
Once the circuit is bled down and the battery is off, remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank and the hose run toward the throttle bodies. Slide the pan underneath and drape a rag over each fitting as it comes apart, since residual fuel stays in the hose regardless of how thoroughly you relieved pressure.
Push clamps well back along the hose before disturbing a fitting, then twist the hose to break the varnish bond instead of pulling straight and hard. Quick–connect couplers call for a different touch: compress the locking tabs squarely and draw the fitting off in line, never at an angle, because plastic collars grow brittle and split when pried. A fused hose end should be slit lengthwise with the blade and peeled away. Photograph the clips and clearance points before the old line clears the frame.
New Hose on Clean Fittings
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Slack does not help; it lets the hose sag into the driveline or chafe against a frame tube until it wears through. Wipe varnish and grit off both barbs, then push each hose end on until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder.
Everything is assembled dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone belongs on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to creep out along under the clamp. Warming a stiff hose end in hot water is the correct way to ease it on. Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten evenly to firm rather than crushed. A self–locking quick–connect gets pushed until the collar clicks and then a firm tug to confirm the latch, with no clamp added. Reseat the hose in every factory clip and verify it touches nothing hot.
Three Checks Before You Ride
Refit the pump fuse or relay, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line, giving you a calm look at both joints with the engine off. That is check one. Follow it with a fingertip pass over each fitting, since a slow seep is easier to feel than to see. Check two is with the engine idling and warming, when heat and vibration reveal a marginal clamp. Check three comes after a short easy loop, with the machine shut down and the fittings inspected one final time.
If fuel delivery still feels soft after all of that, the hose is no longer the suspect. On this 2012 Brute Force 750 the filter is integrated into the in–tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline where it could be replaced alongside the line, so a restriction there would explain symptoms a new hose cannot fix.
