A weeping fuel line is the kind of problem that starts small and ends with a quad you cannot trust. On a 2012 Brute Force 300, the fix is genuinely simple compared to most fuel work, because this machine uses old-school gravity plumbing rather than a pressurized circuit. That makes it an ideal job for a rider who wants to build confidence with a wrench in hand.

Catching the Symptoms Early

Most failing lines give you warning before they leave you walking. The classics on this model include a small wet spot on the floor beneath the left side of the machine where the fuel valve lives, a gasoline odor that lingers around the front plastics, and visible surface cracking that shows up when you bend the hose gently between your fingers. Any one of those alone is enough reason to pull the seat and look closer.

Running behavior tells you just as much. A hose that has hardened and partially collapsed, or one that is sucking air past a loose joint, starves the carburetor. That shows up as a bog when you get into the throttle, a lean stumble at part throttle, or an engine that acts like the tank is nearly empty while the gauge says otherwise. Weeping around a fitting often leaves a telltale dust-crusted ring where fuel has seeped and evaporated over and over.

Why Rubber Loses the Fight

Fuel hose ages from both directions at once. On the outside, years of heat from the air-cooled 271cc single drive the plasticizers out of the compound, and the wall turns from soft and pliable to stiff and glassy. Once that happens, ordinary chassis vibration works small fissures into every bend. Riders in dry, arid climates see this happen noticeably sooner, since low humidity accelerates surface drying and chalking.

On the inside, ethanol-blended fuel goes to work on the liner. The alcohol content attracts moisture and slowly breaks down the inner surface, so a hose can be shedding fine debris toward the carburetor while the exterior still looks passable. Sitting is worse than riding here. A Brute Force 300 that spends months parked with old gas in the line gums up and degrades faster than one used regularly, which is why age deserves as much weight as appearance when you decide to replace.

Your Fuel System in Plain Terms

This is a carbureted machine, and that simplifies everything. A petcock, or fuel valve, mounts at the tank and lets you shut off flow completely before you disconnect anything. Fuel then travels downhill under nothing but gravity to the carburetor inlet, held on by simple hose clamps or pinch clamps at each end. There is no pump to depressurize, no fuse to pull, and no quick-connect coupler to release.

You also have a float bowl drain screw on the carburetor, which is genuinely useful. Opening it with a hose routed into a container empties the bowl cleanly so you are not fighting a puddle when the carb side comes loose. Being a 2x4 machine, the Brute Force 300 has no front differential crowding the frame, so the hose run is short and unusually easy to reach compared to a four-wheel-drive utility quad.

Setting Up the Job

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • An approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
  • Replacement fuel line in the correct inside diameter for this model, cut to length
  • New hose clamps or a small clamp assortment, since original clamps lose tension with age
  • A short length of clear tubing for the float bowl drain
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, basic sockets, and clean rags

Handle the fuel itself with respect. Work outside or with the door wide open, because gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools down near the floor where a pilot light or an errant spark can find it. Keep the extinguisher close, skip any grinding or welding in the same space, and let spilled fuel evaporate outdoors rather than wiping it into a pile of shop rags you toss in a bin.

Removing the Old Hose

Turn the petcock to the off position first. Take the seat off and lift or remove the plastics that block your view of the tank outlet and the carburetor inlet. Route your clear tube from the float bowl drain into the container, crack the drain screw, and let the bowl empty, then close it back up.

Slide a pan under the work area and lay a rag over the joint you plan to open. Back the clamps off and walk them well up the hose so they are not in your way. Twist the hose gently on the barb to break the varnish bond rather than yanking it straight off, since old hose grips hard and a sharp pull can stress the petcock spigot or the carb inlet. If it refuses to release, split it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away in two pieces. Once the line is out, note where it passed through any guide or clip on the frame so the new one takes the same route.

Installing and Verifying

Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Too long and it can chafe or kink against the frame; too short and it puts tension on both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry. Never use grease, oil, or silicone on a fuel fitting, because a lubricated sealing surface leaks and lets the hose creep off under vibration. If the hose is tight, a quick dip in hot water softens the end enough to slide on.

Position fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and snug them evenly. Overtightening a worm-gear clamp cuts into the hose wall and creates the exact leak you are trying to prevent. With both ends secured, open the petcock and wait a minute while fuel fills the line and the float bowl. Inspect both joints with a dry rag and good light, looking for any bead of fuel forming. Fire the engine, let it idle a few minutes, then check once more with the engine running and warm. Only when both connections stay completely dry should the plastics and seat go back on and the 2012 Brute Force 300 head back out to work.
