Understanding and Replacing the Fuel Line on a 2012 Honda Rincon 680 4x4

Before a wrench touches your 2012 Rincon 680, it helps to picture what the fuel system actually does. Everything about this job — the order of operations, the tools you need, why you cannot just pull a hose off — follows directly from how fuel moves through this machine. Ten minutes of understanding saves an hour of frustration and a garage floor full of gasoline.
Tracing the Path Fuel Takes
Your Rincon 680 is fuel injected. Inside the tank sits an electric pump assembly that draws fuel through a filter and pushes it out under pressure through the supply hose to the throttle body, where an injector sprays a metered amount into the intake stream. There is no gravity feed and no carburetor anywhere in that chain, which has three direct consequences for you.
First, there is no manual fuel valve to close. On a carbureted quad you would flip a petcock off and walk away; here the only way to stop flow is to cut power to the pump. Second, the line holds pressure after shutdown, so it must be relieved on purpose before a fitting is separated. Third, the filter lives inside the tank with the pump instead of hanging inline on the hose you can see, so replacing the hose does nothing for a clogged filter. Some joints on this platform also use a self locking quick connect coupler in place of a conventional clamp.
Chassis Layout and Hose Routing
This is a 4x4 machine with independent rear suspension, and that fills the frame. A front differential and driveshaft occupy the forward section, and suspension linkage sits behind. The fuel hose run itself is short, living in the area under the seat and tank plastics, but it is retained by clips positioned deliberately to hold it away from rotating driveline parts and hot exhaust. A two wheel drive utility quad has a somewhat more open path through the same region. Because those clearances were chosen for a reason, photograph the routing before you disturb it and put the new hose back along exactly the same course.
What Makes a Fuel Hose Fail
Fuel line degrades from age far more than from use. The plasticizers that keep the rubber soft slowly migrate out of the compound, and the hose passes through stiff on its way to brittle. Engine heat cycles, ambient temperature swings, sunlight, and ozone all accelerate that. Machines in dry climates lose their hoses first, because low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and leaves a glazed, crack prone surface years earlier than in a humid region.
Ethanol blended fuel adds a second, independent attack from inside. Alcohol in pump gas absorbs moisture out of the air, and fuel left standing through an off season begins breaking down the inner liner while gum and varnish accumulate around each barb. A hose can therefore look presentable while quietly shedding fine material toward an injector with a tiny orifice, which is why a hose on a machine this age gets judged by the calendar rather than by eye.
Warning Signs and What They Mean
- A gasoline smell around the tank, worst right after shutdown while pressure remains in the circuit
- Fuel puddling under the frame, or a dark wet streak on the skid plate
- Surface cracking, a chalky texture, or a section that feels rigid rather than springy when squeezed
- Bogging as the throttle opens, hesitation under load, or a stall resembling an empty tank
- A ring of caked dirt at a fitting, marking fuel that seeped and dried over time
Because the supply side is pressurized, escaping fuel often atomizes and evaporates before reaching the ground. A persistent odor over a dry floor is a real symptom, not a false alarm.
Tools, Parts, and Safe Air
- Hose rated for fuel injection pressure, in the original inside diameter
- New clamps matched to the fittings, plus a quick connect release tool if a locking coupler is used
- Line clamping pliers, since there is no petcock on this model to stop flow
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, and a stack of rags
- A drain pan and a sealable metal or fuel rated container
- Small sockets, a flat blade screwdriver, and a sharp utility blade
Give ventilation genuine attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools along the floor, where you cannot smell it easily and where a spark is most likely to find it. Open the door completely and set a fan at ground level pushing air out of the space. Shut off appliances with pilot lights, disconnect the battery before fuel is exposed, keep an extinguisher within reach, and cap the recovery container between pours.
Removal, Installation, and the Final Check
Relieve pressure first: remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the starter for a few seconds until the engine stalls, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Pull the seat and the plastics over the tank, slide the drain pan into place, and drape a rag over the first joint you open, because a depressurized hose still carries fuel.
Slide clamps well back before disturbing a fitting. On a quick connect, press the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off with no side loading, since aged plastic collars snap. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond at the barb, then draw it off steadily; if it has fused on, slit it lengthwise and peel it away rather than prying on the throttle body or pump module.
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original and push each end fully onto its barb dry. Hot water is the only permissible aid for stiff rubber — grease, oil, and silicone must stay off the fittings, because lubricant on a sealing surface both creates a leak path and lets the hose creep off under pressure. Fit new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten them evenly, snug without cutting the wall. If a self locking coupler is present, push until it clicks and tug firmly to confirm the latch; that fitting needs no clamp.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle pressurizes the line so you can inspect both connections dry and under working pressure. Wipe and recheck, then start the engine and look again at idle with the machine vibrating. Ride a short slow loop, shut down, and inspect one last time before the panels return. If a delivery problem outlives a leak free install, the in tank filter and pump assembly is your next target.
