The 2012 Rancher 420 4x4 delivers gas the old-fashioned way — a petcock on the tank, gravity down a short rubber line, and a carburetor with a drainable float bowl. That layout means there is no fuel pressure to relieve and no pump to disable, so the moment you turn that valve off, the job is entirely under your control.

Why Old Fuel Hose Cannot Be Trusted

Rubber fuel line is engineered to flex, and it loses that ability with age. The plasticizers that keep the wall pliable migrate out season after season until the hose is stiff and glassy. Heat radiating off the cylinder pushes it along, vibration through a working chassis turns stiffness into cracking, and a dry climate accelerates everything by pulling moisture out of the rubber from the outside.

Inside, ethanol-blended pump gas is doing separate damage. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and slowly breaks down the inner liner, a process that runs fastest when a machine sits for months with gas standing in the line. The upshot is a hose that has hardened outside and softened inside, sending fine debris toward the carburetor while it waits to split. That is why age matters as much as appearance on a Rancher this old.

Symptoms Worth Chasing Down

Look for these before condemning anything more expensive:

  • Fuel pooling under the frame after a night parked, always in the same place
  • A strong gasoline smell in an enclosed garage with the machine cold
  • Cracking or a hard, chalky surface where the line bends near a fitting
  • A grimy collar of dried fuel residue at the petcock or carburetor barb
  • Bogging on hills, stumbling at part throttle, or a lean condition that behaves like an empty tank

Pinch the hose between two fingers as your quick field test. Healthy line flattens and springs back immediately. A hose that stays deformed, feels like a plastic tube, or crunches audibly is finished.

Supplies and Working Safely With Gas

  • Correct-diameter fuel line for the Rancher 420, plus fresh clamps
  • Gloves, plenty of rags, and a clean blade for square cuts
  • Drain pan and an approved sealable container
  • Screwdriver, small pliers, and sockets for the seat and tank shroud

Ventilation deserves more than a passing mention. Gasoline vapor is denser than air and settles at floor level, which is exactly where your head is when you reach the carburetor inlet. Work outside or with the door fully open, remove every ignition source from the space including pilot lights and shop heaters, and never start this with a hot engine.

Freeing the Original Hose

Turn the petcock to OFF and give the line a moment to stop feeding. Take off the seat and the plastic covering the tank so both ends of the run are accessible. Slide the catch pan under the engine, aim the float bowl drain hose into your container, and open the drain screw to empty the carburetor bowl before disconnecting anything.

Push both clamps back along the hose. Original line will be bonded to the barbs by years of varnish, so twist gently to break it loose instead of hauling on it. If a fitting still holds, slice the hose lengthwise and peel it away rather than levering against the petcock spigot, which bends easily. Pay attention to the routing on the way out. The 4x4 driveline adds front differential and driveshaft hardware to work around, so the hose path is a bit tighter than on a two-wheel-drive machine and every original clip has a purpose.

Fitting, Clamping, and Testing

Cut the new hose to the same length as the old one. Extra length looks harmless and ends up rubbing on the frame or looping toward hot exhaust. Push each end all the way onto its barb, past the raised bead, working the rubber on dry. Warm water softens a stubborn end enough to slide. Keep grease, oil, and silicone completely away from the fittings, because a lubricated sealing surface will not grip and gives fuel a route to weep past the clamp.

Install the new clamps just behind the bead at both ends, snug and even. Return the hose to every factory guide so it stays away from the header and clear of the front driveline. Close the float bowl drain screw and verify it is tight.

Now open the petcock and let gravity do your leak test. The line fills within a minute, and any marginal connection shows itself as a bead of fuel at a clamp. Wipe both joints dry, wait, and check again. Start the engine, let it idle so the fittings vibrate, and inspect a third time before you go anywhere.

Two Details Worth Handling Now

With the system drained, replace the inline fuel filter and inspect the small vent hose that runs from the tank cap. A crimped or blocked vent will starve a gravity-fed carburetor exactly as convincingly as a failing line, and a filter loaded with tank sediment recreates the bogging you set out to fix. The visible, inline filter is a genuine convenience on the carbureted 420 — the fuel-injected Ranchers that came later put the filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, where you cannot simply swap it in the driveway. Once the joints stay dry through a short test ride, reinstall the plastics and your 2012 Rancher is sorted.
