On the 2012 Rancher 420 4x4 ES with power steering, that hose carries every drop of fuel the engine will ever burn, and when it hardens or splits you get either a slow fuel leak onto hot metal or an engine that acts like the tank is empty. Replacing it is a straightforward afternoon job once you know what sits where.

Symptoms That Point Straight at the Hose

This generation of Rancher gives fair warning before a line lets go. Look for these before you start chasing carburetor jets or ignition parts:

  • A damp patch or small puddle of gas on the skid plate or garage floor under the left side of the machine
  • A gasoline smell that lingers around the tank area long after shutdown
  • Visible hairline cracking, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels stiff and glassy when you pinch it
  • Bogging under load, a stumble climbing hills, or an engine that surges then dies as if starved
  • A dust-caked ring at either fitting, which is dried fuel residue collecting grit

The lean-running symptoms are worth taking seriously. A hose collapsing internally or drawing air past a loose clamp starves the carburetor exactly like a plugged filter, and running that way puts real heat into the top end.

What Actually Breaks Down Inside the Line

Fuel hose ages from both directions at once. The rubber slowly loses the plasticizers that keep it flexible, and every heat cycle off the 420 single accelerates that loss until the hose no longer conforms to the barb it is clamped onto. Riders in dry, high desert country see this happen faster because low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall and stiffens the outer jacket well ahead of schedule.

From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas does the opposite. Alcohol attracts water and slowly attacks the inner liner, softening and swelling it while the exterior turns brittle. A Rancher parked for a few months with E10 sitting in the line comes out the other side with gum in the passages and a hose that looks fine but sheds material toward the carburetor. On a machine this age, calendar time matters as much as what your eyes tell you.

Confirming What You Are Working With

The 2012 Rancher 420 is carbureted, so your fuel system is gravity fed and unpressurized. That is good news. There is a manual fuel valve, the petcock, mounted where you can reach it below the tank, and turning it off genuinely stops flow. The line drops from that valve to the carburetor inlet and is held at each end by a small spring or wire clamp. Nothing on this machine is under pump pressure, which is the key difference from the fuel-injected Ranchers that arrived later in this platform's run — those have no petcock at all, run a pressurized circuit off an in-tank pump, and often use a locking quick-connect coupler where yours has a simple barb and clamp.

Because this is a 4x4 with electric shift and the power steering unit, the area around the steering stem and the front of the engine is more crowded than on a two-wheel-drive quad. The line routes past additional frame structure and clears the front driveshaft and the shift motor harness. Take a photo of the routing before anything comes loose.

Gloves, a Bucket, and Moving Air

Set everything out before you open a fitting:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves — gasoline strips skin oils fast and carries through cheap latex
  • An approved metal or plastic container for the fuel you drain, plus a funnel
  • Replacement fuel hose matched to the original inside diameter and length
  • Fresh clamps or a small clamp assortment, since the originals lose tension
  • A flat-blade screwdriver for the float bowl drain, hose pick, sharp razor, shop rags
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and the plastic panels over the tank

Work outside or with the door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation low in the space matters far more than a cracked window overhead. Keep the battery disconnected, no grinders or heaters running, and no smoking anywhere near the machine.

Getting the Old Hose Out

Turn the petcock to the off position first, then pull the seat and the panels covering the tank so you can see the valve, the full run of hose, and the carburetor inlet. Set your container under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty through the drain tube. That removes most of the fuel that would otherwise run down your arm.

Slide each clamp back along the hose with pliers before you disturb the connection. Twist the hose gently on the barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling straight against it. If a hardened end refuses to come free, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away — replacing a cracked plastic carburetor inlet costs far more than the hose does. Note which clips and guides the line passed through on the way down past the driveline, and do not confuse the tank vent hose running off the filler area with the fuel supply line.

Seating the New Line Without Shortcuts

Cut the new hose to match the old one exactly. Extra length chafes on the frame or gets caught by the steering, and a short piece pulls at both barbs every time the chassis flexes. Push each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder of the fitting. Never use grease, oil, or silicone spray to ease it on; lubricant on a sealing surface gives fuel a path to weep out later. A few seconds in hot water softens a stubborn end enough to slide home.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and snug them evenly without crushing the rubber. Route the hose back through its original guides so it stays clear of the exhaust and the front differential hardware, with no kinks or tight bends anywhere along the run.

Fuel On, Eyes Open, Then Ride

Close the float bowl drain, turn the petcock to on, and simply watch for two full minutes before touching the starter. Gravity will find any gap you left. Run a clean dry rag around both fittings and check it for wetness rather than trusting a glance. Start the engine, let it idle, and check again while it is warm and vibrating, since a marginal clamp often seeps only under vibration. Reinstall the plastics and the seat once you have several minutes of dry running, and give the fittings one more look after your first real ride.
