Planning the Job on a Machine With Some Years on It
A 2012 Renegade 1000 X XC has enough seasons behind it that its original fuel plumbing is worth a hard look whether or not anything has gone wrong yet. Cross-country trim means this quad was built for fast, rough miles, and years of that kind of vibration take a measurable toll on rubber. Before you order anything, get the seat and side panels off and trace the hose from the tank fitting to the throttle body so you know exactly how long a piece you need and how many clips hold it. Ten minutes of looking prevents a parts order that turns out an inch short.
The Rotax Twin Is Injected, So There Is No Petcock
Confirm the fuel system before you plan a single step. This Renegade uses the Rotax V-twin with electronic fuel injection and an in-tank pump module, so nothing on the machine resembles the gravity fed petcock arrangement of an older carbureted quad. Fuel remains pressurized in the line long after shutdown, which means bleeding pressure down is the first physical step rather than closing a valve. Expect factory clips or a self-locking quick-connect coupler where the hose meets the tank, and buy replacement hose rated for injection pressure with an inside diameter matching the original.
Why the Old Hose Went Hard
Fuel hose degrades on two fronts. Heat cycling and vibration steadily drive plasticizers out of the rubber, and the wall stiffens until routine chassis flex starts opening fine cracks in the surface. Dry, low humidity regions push this along faster by drawing residual moisture out of the hose, so a machine kept in arid country often looks a decade older than its calendar age.
Meanwhile, ethanol blended fuel does its work from the inside. Alcohol attracts water and gradually attacks the inner liner, and a Renegade that has sat unused with fuel standing in the lines can develop soft, swollen spots along with varnish and gum that flake off downstream. On a thirteen year old machine that has spent time parked between riding seasons, both processes have had plenty of opportunity.
Recognizing a Line About to Fail
Symptoms usually show up well before an outright split:
- A wet patch or small puddle beneath the quad after it sits overnight
- A gasoline smell around the tank that will not go away, strongest just after shutdown
- Fine cracking, chalky surface texture, or hard sections you can feel when pinching the hose
- Swelling or a soft bulge near either fitting
- An engine that bogs under throttle, stumbles at part load, or behaves as though it is low on fuel
- A ring of caked dust at a joint, which is dried fuel residue from slow weeping
Injected machines make small leaks harder to see, because pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole tends to atomize and evaporate before it hits the floor. A smell you cannot account for still counts as a finding worth chasing.
Tools and a Genuinely Safe Setup
Collect nitrile gloves, safety glasses, EFI rated hose in the correct size, new clamps in the stock style, a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank coupler needs one, line-clamping pliers, an approved sealed container for drained fuel, a shallow catch pan, sockets for the bodywork, a razor knife, and clean rags.
Do this work outdoors or with the shop wide open, and set a fan on the ground moving air across the workspace. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and gathers at floor level where you will not smell it clearly, so low airflow beats an open window every time. Unplug chargers, shut down grinders and heaters, put out any pilot flame nearby, and let the exhaust cool before you touch a fitting. Gasoline also strips the oils out of bare skin quickly, which is why gloves matter more than they seem to.
Bleeding Pressure and Pulling the Line
Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the starter a couple of seconds until the engine dies, key off, then disconnect the negative battery cable. With pressure gone, position the drain pan and lay a rag over the joint you will open first, because a depressurized hose still holds fuel that runs out the moment it comes free.
Move any spring clip or screw clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Release a quick-connect by pressing both lock tabs squarely and pulling straight off the nipple; levering it sideways cracks a collar that has gone brittle with age. When varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, twist it gently to break the seal instead of pulling hard, and if it refuses, split it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away so the fitting survives intact. Photograph the routing before the last clip comes loose. As a 4x4 chassis with front differential hardware and additional crossmembers, this Renegade routes the hose through more clearance points than a two-wheel-drive quad, and every guide you miss becomes a rub spot.
Fitting and Securing the Replacement
Cut the new hose to match the removed piece precisely. Extra length lets the line drift toward the exhaust or chafe on frame edges, while a short piece loads both fittings at an angle. Slide each end onto its barb until it bottoms out past the raised bead, and install everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray must stay off the fittings entirely, since lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path to weep past the hose. A quick soak of the hose end in hot water is the right way to ease a tight fit.
Set new clamps just behind the bead and tighten them evenly rather than digging into the rubber. A self-locking quick-connect requires no clamp at all: press until it clicks and then tug firmly to verify it latched. Put the hose back into every original clip so it stays clear of the driveline and hot surfaces.
Confirming the Repair
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle primes the pump and pressurizes the circuit while the engine sits cold, which is the ideal moment to study both joints. Run a clean rag around each fitting and check for the faintest damp streak, then start the engine and inspect once more at idle. Let it run several dry minutes before reinstalling any plastics.
One platform detail to keep in mind: the fuel filter on this injected Renegade lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than sitting inline where you can service it. A new hose cannot compensate for a restricted filter, so if the machine still feels starved after a clean install, the in-tank module deserves attention next.
