How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2012 Can-Am Renegade 1000

Set yourself up properly and this is an afternoon job on the 2012 Renegade 1000. Rush it and you will be mopping gasoline off the garage floor. The difference comes down to preparation, because the 976cc Rotax V-twin in this sport quad is fuel injected and fed by an electric pump mounted inside the tank. There is no petcock to close, and the line you are replacing holds pressure any time the key has been on. Everything about the approach follows from that.

Parts, Tools, and Ventilation

Lay out the following before a single clamp comes loose:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves — gasoline pulls the oils straight out of bare skin
  • An approved metal or fuel-rated plastic container plus a wide drain pan
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the correct inside diameter; ordinary low-pressure carburetor hose is not acceptable on this circuit
  • New clamps in the matching style, and a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank outlet on your Renegade uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers for closing off any low-pressure section, which matters more here precisely because there is no shutoff valve
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and side plastics, a razor knife, and a generous supply of clean rags

The safety piece is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drifts downward and collects at floor level rather than rising out an open window. Work outside or with the shop door fully open, and get air moving low in the space. Pull the plug on chargers, space heaters, and grinders, kill any pilot light in the building, and keep an extinguisher where you can reach it without standing up.

The Chemistry and Physics Behind a Failed Hose

Fuel line degrades on two fronts at once. Externally, the compounds that keep rubber pliable leach out over years of heat cycling, and a hose that was once soft turns rigid and glassy. The Renegade's V-twin puts real heat under the plastics and real vibration through the frame, and both work that hardened material until hairline cracks appear at the bends. In dry, low-humidity climates the process runs faster, since arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall.

Internally, ethanol-blended fuel is the culprit. Alcohol in the gas absorbs water and slowly breaks down the hose liner, softening it and leaving gum in its wake. A machine parked for weeks at a time with fuel in the system gives that reaction every opportunity. The practical result is a hose that can pass a casual visual inspection while shedding degraded material toward the injectors.

Signs Your Line Is Done

Take any of these seriously on a machine of this age:

  • Gasoline pooling under the frame or wetting the skid plate after the quad has been parked
  • A strong fuel smell around the tank, often most noticeable right after shutdown while residual pressure remains
  • Cracks, a chalky surface, or a section that feels stiff and refuses to flex when squeezed
  • The V-twin bogging under acceleration, running lean at higher rpm, or behaving as though it is short on fuel
  • A ring of dirt stuck to a fitting, which marks fuel that has been seeping and evaporating over time

On a pressurized system a fine leak can vaporize before it drips, so a persistent odor with no visible puddle is still a legitimate finding.

Taking the Old Line Off

Relieve the pressure before anything else. Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it sputters and dies, switch the key off, then disconnect the negative battery terminal. Pull the seat and the side panels that cover the tank outlet and the run of hose heading toward the throttle body. Slide the drain pan into position and drape a rag over the first joint you open, because a depressurized line still holds a surprising amount of fuel.

Move clamps well back on the hose before you attempt to separate anything. Spring clips come off with pliers; worm-gear clamps just loosen and slide. A quick-connect coupler releases when you press its tabs squarely and pull straight back, and it breaks if you lever it sideways, so resist the temptation. Rotate each hose end gently to break the varnish bond at the barb, and when one refuses to release, split it lengthwise and peel it away rather than risking a cracked fitting. The Renegade 1000 is a selectable 4x4, so trace where the line passes front differential hardware and additional frame bracing, and photograph the clips before the old hose is fully out.

Installation Without Shortcuts

Cut the new hose to match the old one exactly. Surplus length is not a safety margin; it lets the line droop into the frame or against the front driveline where it will abrade. Push each end onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and assemble it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel fitting — a lubricated sealing surface is exactly how pressurized fuel finds its way past a clamp. Warm the hose end in hot water if it fights you.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to snug, not crushed. If your machine uses a self-locking quick-connect at the tank, seat it until the collar clicks and then pull firmly to confirm engagement; that fitting is designed to work without a clamp and adding one causes problems. Secure the hose back into its original clips so it stays away from exhaust heat and the front drive components.

Pressure Test and Finish

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle spins the pump and pressurizes the line, giving you a clean look at both joints while everything is still dry. Wipe each fitting with a fresh rag and watch for a bead forming. Then start the engine and inspect again at idle, following the whole run with a light. Several uneventful minutes at idle, plus a short shakedown ride, is the standard to meet before the plastics go back on.

Bear in mind that the fuel filter on this injected Renegade is built into the in-tank pump module rather than sitting inline where you can reach it. New hose solves hose problems only. If the 1000 still stumbles like it is starving after a clean install, the in-tank assembly is your next target.
