Before you buy a single part, understand how fuel actually reaches the engine on your 2011 Grizzly 700. Get that wrong and you will order the wrong hose, look for a shutoff valve that does not exist, and open a fitting that is still holding pressure. Get it right and the replacement becomes a straightforward afternoon of work with tools you already own.
How Fuel Moves on This Machine
The 2011 Grizzly 700 runs electronic fuel injection. An electric pump sits inside the fuel tank and pushes fuel under pressure through a hose to the throttle body, where the injector meters it into the 686cc single. Nothing here relies on gravity, and there is no petcock beneath the tank to twist closed the way there is on a carbureted utility quad. That means two things for you: the hose you install has to be rated for injection pressure rather than the soft low pressure stuff sold for carburetor use, and the circuit must be bled down before you crack a fitting.
Filtration also lives in a different place than riders expect. On this platform the filter element is part of the pump assembly inside the tank rather than sitting inline where you can see it on the hose. Fresh plumbing cures leaks and cracks, but it does nothing for a restricted in-tank filter, so file that away in case delivery symptoms outlive the new hose.
The Reasons Hose Goes Bad
Fuel hose ages from the wall outward and the bore inward at the same time. On the outside, heat cycling drives the plasticizers out of the compound over years, and the once flexible rubber turns hard and glassy. Hardened hose cannot flex with the machine, so hairline splits open at bends, at clamp shoulders, and anywhere the hose has been under tension. Riders in dry, high desert country see this happen noticeably faster, because low humidity accelerates the drying process from the outside in.
On the inside, ethanol blended pump gas does its own damage. Alcohol pulls moisture out of the air and attacks the inner liner, gradually gumming and softening it. A Grizzly that sits for months with a partial tank gets the worst of it, since the fuel is standing still against the liner the entire time. That is why the mileage on the odometer matters less than the year on the title when you are judging whether a hose is due.
Symptoms Worth Acting On
Look and listen for the following before a small problem becomes a trailside one:
- A puddle or wet streak on the skid plate or shop floor under the middle of the machine
- Persistent gasoline odor, most noticeable in the minutes right after you shut the key off
- Surface cracking, crazing, or a chalky white haze on the hose, particularly at curves
- A hardened, brittle feel when you pinch the hose between your fingers
- An engine that bogs on a climb, stumbles under acceleration, or surges lean as if the tank were low
- Grime that has caked into a ring at a fitting, which marks fuel that has been weeping and drying repeatedly
Keep in mind that a pressure side pinhole can atomize fuel into vapor without ever dripping, so a strong smell counts as evidence on its own.
Tooling Up, Plus the Safety Part That Matters
Set out injection rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps to fit, a quick connect release tool if the pump plate uses a locking coupler, and line clamping pliers to substitute for the shutoff valve this machine does not have. Add nitrile gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container, a drain pan, rags, basic sockets, a screwdriver, and a sharp knife.
Ventilation is not a formality on fuel work. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and spreads across the floor where an open window above your head does nothing at all. Do this outdoors if you can, or with the garage door fully raised and a fan moving air at floor level. Shut down anything with a pilot light or open element, keep an extinguisher close, and take fuel soaked rags outside rather than leaving them in a bin.
Pulling the Old Hose
Bleed the pressure first. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the box under the seat, run the engine until it starves and stalls, key off, then disconnect the negative battery lead. Take the seat and the side plastics off so you can see the tank, the pump plate, and the entire hose run back to the throttle body.
Put the drain pan in position and drape a rag over the fitting as you release it, since a bled circuit still holds a slug of fuel. Slide clamps well clear of the barbs before you disturb anything. If you find a plastic quick connect, squeeze both release tabs evenly and pull it straight off the nipple; levering it sideways will crack a collar that has been getting brittle for more than a decade. Where the hose has bonded to a barb with varnish, twist it gently to break the seal, and if it will not release, slit it lengthwise and peel it away rather than putting a pry tool near the fitting.
Study the routing before the original comes out. The 4x4 driveline on this Grizzly adds front differential hardware and frame structure that a 2WD quad does not carry, and the hose threads past those clearance points. A couple of photos now will save you guesswork later.
Installation, Then Proving It Holds
Trim the new hose to the exact length of the old one. Extra length sags into the frame, chafes against a crossmember, or migrates toward the header. Work each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry — no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere near a sealing surface, because lubricant gives pressurized fuel a path to creep along and weep. Hot water is the correct way to soften a hose end that resists.
Place new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, firm enough to seal without biting into the hose. A self locking quick connect needs no clamp; push until the collar clicks, then tug to confirm it has latched. Return the hose to every original clip so it stays away from the front driveline and hot exhaust.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you inspect the joints while they are still dry. Wipe them down, watch for any bead of fuel forming, then start the engine and check again at idle for several minutes. Only after that clean run should the bodywork go back on.
