Vibration, engine heat, and a decade of pump gas eventually catch up with every fuel hose, and the 2011 Grizzly 550 4x4 Power Steering is no exception. The replacement is a reasonable home job, but the first thing to settle is what kind of fuel system you are dealing with, because that decides how you shut the supply off and which hose you buy.
Start by Knowing What You Are Cutting Into
This Grizzly 550 is fuel injected. An electric pump sits inside the fuel tank, feeding pressurized fuel through the supply hose to the throttle body, where an injector meters it. There is no petcock anywhere on the machine, so you cannot simply rotate a valve to OFF and walk away. The pump also holds pressure in the line after the engine stops, which means the hose has to be depressurized on purpose before you open a fitting. On the parts side, only hose rated for injection pressure belongs on this quad.
A Decade of Heat Cycles Takes Its Toll
Fuel hose does not fail from abrasion so much as from chemistry. Every time the engine warms up and cools down, a little more of the plasticizer content that keeps the rubber pliable escapes. Over years the wall grows stiff, shrinks slightly, and stops conforming to the barb it is clamped to. Machines that live in dry, high-desert or high-plains air get there faster, because low humidity accelerates the same hardening process.
Ethanol-blended fuel handles the other half of the destruction. Alcohol pulls moisture into the system and slowly eats at the hose liner, so the inside can be soft, swollen, and shedding particles while the outside is turning glassy. Add the varnish and gum left behind when fuel evaporates during idle months, and you get hose that is fused to its fittings and hiding early seepage under dried residue. On an eleven-year-plus machine, calendar age is reason enough.
Warning Flags on the Ground and in the Air
- A wet patch or small puddle beneath the quad after it has been parked overnight
- Raw fuel smell hanging around the machine, most obvious right after you shut the engine down
- Fine cracks, splits, or a hardened section you can feel by pinching the hose
- Grit stuck to a damp ring at a fitting, which is dried fuel collecting dust
- An engine that bogs when loaded, hesitates off idle, or behaves as though the tank is nearly empty
On a pressurized system a small leak does not always drip, since escaping fuel can atomize and evaporate. Trust your nose here as much as your eyes, and treat any of these signs as reason to pull the plastics and look.
Assembling Your Kit
Have all of it staged before the first fitting comes loose: nitrile gloves, eye protection, a wide drain pan, an approved sealed fuel container, injection-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps in the correct style, a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler, line-clamping pliers to stand in for the absent fuel valve, hand tools for the seat and plastics, and a generous supply of clean rags.
Ventilation deserves real attention rather than a passing thought. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles low, collecting under the machine and around your feet where you will not notice it. Either roll the Grizzly outside or open the bay completely and put a fan on the floor moving air out. Eliminate every ignition source, hot work lights included, and set a fire extinguisher where you can grab it without standing up.
Pressure Down, Hose Off
Begin by pulling the fuel pump fuse and cranking the engine until it stalls, which vents most of the stored pressure. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Take the seat off along with whatever side panels block your view of the tank and the hose run heading toward the throttle body.
Position the pan, drape a rag over the joint, and expect residual fuel even after depressurizing. Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before you disturb the connection. A quick-connect coupler releases when both tabs are pressed evenly and the fitting is pulled straight off — side loading cracks collars that have grown brittle over the years. Hose varnished onto a barb should be split lengthwise with a razor and peeled away, never wrenched.
Study the routing before the old piece is completely free. Because this is a 4x4 with power steering hardware and a front differential filling the forward chassis, the factory hose path threads through specific clearance points that a two-wheel-drive layout would never need. Reproduce it exactly.
Dry Fit, Firm Seat
Measure the replacement against the original and cut it to match. Slack is not neutral — a long hose sags toward the exhaust or saws against a frame edge until it wears through. Push each end onto its barb until it bottoms out on the shoulder, and install it completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting build a channel that pressurized fuel will find, no matter how hard you tighten the clamp. Soften a stubborn end in hot water instead.
Set fresh clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting, tightening evenly to a firm grip without cutting into the rubber. Where the tank side uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until it clicks and then pull hard to confirm the latch caught; no clamp is wanted there. Reinstall the hose into every original clip so it stays away from the header and the front driveline.
Verify, Then Ride
Put the pump fuse back, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Every cycle primes and pressurizes the hose, letting you check both joints while the rubber is still clean and dry. At that stage even a trace of dampness is obvious, which is exactly what you want.
Once the static test comes back dry, start the 550 and let it idle for a few minutes while you look at both connections with a fresh rag and pay attention to the air around the tank. Reinstall the plastics only after it has run clean. If delivery still feels weak afterward, remember the filter on this machine lives inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the hose, so a restricted in-tank filter is the natural next stop.
