Fuel Line Replacement on a 2011 Grizzly 450 4x4 with Power Steering

The electric power steering on this 2011 Grizzly 450 adds hardware around the steering stem, but it does not change what the fuel system is. This machine is carbureted, so the hose you are replacing carries no pressure, is fed by gravity from the tank, and can be shut off with the hand-operated fuel valve underneath. What the power steering unit does affect is elbow room, since the EPS assembly and its wiring share space with the front of the chassis where the line runs.

Clearing Access Around the Steering Hardware

Take a good look at the area before removing anything. The supply hose leaves the fuel valve spigot below the tank, drops past frame structure, and lands on the carburetor inlet. Nearby you will find the carburetor vent hose and the float bowl overflow tube, neither of which carries supply fuel and neither of which should be cut by mistake. On the power steering model, wiring and the EPS unit itself occupy part of that space, so plan on removing the seat and enough front bodywork to give your hands a clear shot at both fittings instead of working blind.

Because this is a 4WD machine, the line also routes past front differential hardware and extra crossmembers. Photograph the path and every retaining clip before disturbing anything, so the replacement returns to the same sheltered route away from moving parts and heat.

How Fuel Hose Deteriorates

Fuel line gives out with time rather than mileage. The plasticizers that keep the rubber pliable escape steadily, and once they are gone the wall no longer flexes at the bends near the valve and the carburetor — it cracks there instead. Heat cycling from the engine accelerates the hardening, and dry, low-humidity air pushes it further along by drawing moisture out of the rubber from the surface inward.

Working from inside, ethanol-blended fuel degrades the liner and pulls water into the system, and gasoline that stands unused for months leaves gum and varnish that narrow the bore. Those opposing processes are why a hose can look intact while shedding material internally, and why time in service is the better basis for replacement than appearance.

Symptoms to Take Seriously

  • Fuel staining or a puddle beneath the frame after the machine sits with the valve open
  • Gasoline odor lingering around the quad in a closed garage
  • Cracking at the hose bends, a chalky surface, or a stiff section you can feel by pinching
  • Bogging on climbs, lean surging, or the engine acting like the tank is empty
  • Dust caked into a damp ring at either barb

Head pressure from a full tank is what exposes a weak joint on a gravity-fed machine, so test with the tank filled and the quad parked level before deciding the line is fine.

Supplies and Gasoline Safety

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A sealed fuel-rated container and a shallow catch pan
  • Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
  • New spring clips or compact worm-gear clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch off flow at an open end
  • Flat screwdriver, sockets, sharp razor blade, clean rags

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level, right where water heater pilots, chargers, and brush-motor tools sit. Work outside or with the overhead door fully raised, shut down every ignition source in the space, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and cap the drain container immediately after use.

Getting the Old Line Off

Close the fuel valve first, then loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through its overflow tube into the pan. Slide the clamps back along the hose so they clear both fittings, then break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist and draw the hose straight off.

If a hose has fused itself to a fitting, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away rather than prying, since the valve spigot and carburetor inlet bend more easily than they look. Keep an eye on how the line clears the EPS wiring and the front driveline as it comes out, and set the old hose alongside your new length as a template.

Fitting the New Hose & Checking for Leaks

Cut the replacement to the original length and no more. Extra slack sags into the frame, chafes on a crossmember, or wanders toward exhaust heat. Push each end fully onto its barb dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone on the sealing surface, because any lubricant there gives fuel a route past the clamp that tightening will not close. Soften a tight end in hot water for a few seconds instead of forcing it on.

Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting the wall. Route the hose through its factory clips, keeping it away from the steering hardware and the front drive, and change the inline filter now if it looks dark or holds sediment, with its flow arrow aimed toward the carburetor.

Open the valve and let the system stand several minutes with a full tank so both joints carry head pressure. Blot each connection with a clean pale rag and look for amber staining rather than waiting for a drip. Once the static check is clean, start the engine and inspect at idle, take a short shakedown ride, and check both ends one last time before the plastics go back on. A new hose restores supply but not metering, so continued bogging points to float level and jetting inside the carburetor.
