The 2011 Grizzly 450 4x4 is carbureted, so the hose you are about to replace is unpressurized, gravity fed, and controlled by a fuel valve you turn with your hand. There is no in-tank pump to depressurize, no relay to pull, and no locking coupler to release — the entire supply path is a tank, a valve, a hose, and a carburetor inlet.

Following the Supply Path Before You Start

Trace the hose visually before reaching for a tool. It leaves the fuel valve spigot under the tank, drops through a retaining clip or two, and terminates on the carburetor inlet. Running nearby are the carburetor vent hose and the float bowl overflow tube, and neither of those carries supply fuel. Identifying the right hose now saves you from cutting the wrong one when you are elbow deep in bodywork.

The 4WD layout on this machine puts front differential hardware and extra frame structure in the neighborhood of that run, so the line takes a slightly longer, more sheltered path than it would on a two-wheel-drive quad. The procedure is unchanged, but the new hose has to follow the same route to stay away from moving parts and hot surfaces.

  • A gasoline smell that lingers around the machine in a closed garage
  • Hairline cracks near the bends or a chalky, hardened feel when you squeeze the hose
  • Bogging under throttle, lean surging, or behavior that mimics an empty tank
  • Grit packed into a damp ring at either barb

Head pressure from a full tank is what exposes a marginal joint on a gravity-fed machine. Fill it, park level, leave the valve on, and check again in an hour rather than trusting a dry glance.

Why the Rubber Gave Up

Fuel hose loses its softening compounds steadily with age, and a hose that has shed them no longer flexes — it fractures wherever it bends. Heat radiating off the engine advances that hardening, and dry, arid air speeds it further by pulling moisture from the hose wall inward from the surface. None of that requires hard riding; a machine parked in a shed ages its hose nearly as fast as one that works every weekend.

Ethanol-blended gasoline handles the other half of the damage. It degrades the inner liner and draws water into the system, and fuel that sits through a long idle stretch leaves gum and varnish behind that narrows the passage. That is how a hose can look fine outside while shedding material and restricting flow inside, and it is why calendar age is the better guide on a machine of this vintage.

Tools, Parts, and Ventilation

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and safety glasses
  • A lidded fuel-rated container plus a shallow catch pan
  • Gasoline-rated replacement hose sized to the original inside diameter
  • Fresh spring clips or compact worm-gear clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch the hose closed while an end is open
  • Flat screwdriver, socket set, sharp razor blade, clean rags

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it collects at floor level and drifts toward pilot lights, chargers, and brush-motor tools. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully raised, shut off every ignition source in the space, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach instead of across the shop, and cap the fuel container as soon as draining is finished.

Removing the Old Hose

Turn the fuel valve off, then loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through its overflow tube into the pan. Remove the seat and the bodywork covering both ends of the run, and photograph the routing with every clip still in place. Slide the clamps well back along the hose before you disturb either fitting.

A gentle twist breaks the varnish bond that years of service build at each barb, and the hose then pulls straight off. If it has fused solid, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away rather than levering on the fitting, because the valve spigot and carburetor inlet both deform easily and neither is worth the risk. Note how the line clears the front driveline on its way out.

Fitting the Replacement

Match the new hose to the original length and cut it there. Excess slack sags into the frame, chafes a crossmember, or drifts toward exhaust heat. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms, working entirely dry — grease, oil, and silicone on a sealing surface create a leak path that clamp tension cannot close. Soften a tight end in hot water for a few seconds instead of forcing it.

Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting the wall. Return the hose to its factory clips, well clear of steering components and the front drive, and change a dark or sediment-loaded inline filter while access is open with its flow arrow pointed toward the carburetor.

Leak Check and Final Notes

Open the valve and let the machine stand for several minutes with a full tank so both joints see real head pressure. Blot each connection with a clean light-colored rag and watch for amber staining, which reveals a weep long before a drop forms. When the static test is clean, start the engine and inspect again at idle while vibration and heat surface anything the still test missed.

Take a short shakedown loop, shut down, and give both ends one last look before the plastics go back on. A new hose fixes supply, not metering — if the bogging persists with fresh line and a clean filter, the float level and jetting inside the carburetor are where to look next.
