A Grizzly 350 IRS that hesitates halfway up a climb, leaves a damp spot on the garage floor overnight, or greets you with a strong gasoline smell before you even reach the key is usually complaining about a tired piece of rubber rather than a failing engine. This model is carbureted, which means fuel leaves the tank through a manually operated fuel valve and drops down to the carburetor by gravity through a short length of hose. That layout makes the repair genuinely approachable for a home mechanic, and it also explains why one split hose can empty an entire tank onto your driveway.

Symptoms That Point Straight at the Hose

Before you buy anything, confirm the hose is actually the problem. Look and sniff for the following:

  • A puddle or wet streak under the left side of the frame after the machine has sat with the fuel valve open
  • Gasoline odor that lingers in a closed garage long after the engine has cooled
  • Hairline cracks, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels stiff and glassy when you pinch it
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble off idle, or behavior that mimics running out of gas even with a full tank
  • A dust-caked ring at either barb, which is dried fuel residue collecting grit

On a gravity-fed machine like the 350, a weeping hose often shows itself only when the tank is full and head pressure is highest. Fill it up, park on level ground, and come back in an hour before deciding the line is fine.

What Actually Kills a Fuel Hose

Rubber fuel hose does not wear out from use so much as from time. The plasticizers that keep the wall soft slowly migrate out, and once they are gone the hose behaves more like hard plastic than rubber. Every heat cycle off the engine and every chassis flex on rough two-track then works those stiff spots into real fissures. Riders in dry, low-humidity country see this happen faster, since arid air pulls moisture from the hose wall and hardens it from the outside inward.

Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from the other side. Alcohol in the fuel draws water into the system and slowly breaks down the inner liner, so a hose can be hardening on the outside while softening and shedding material on the inside. Fuel left standing in the line for a season accelerates both processes and can leave gum deposits that partially choke flow. On a machine of this vintage, age alone justifies a fresh hose even if the old one still looks presentable.

Gathering Gear & Setting Up a Safe Space

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils fast
  • A sealed metal or fuel-rated container plus a shallow drain pan
  • Replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for gasoline
  • New spring clips or small worm-gear clamps, or a mixed clamp kit
  • A pair of line-clamping pliers to pinch the hose while you work
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, small socket set, sharp razor blade, and clean rags

Do this job outdoors or with the overhead door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a cracked window well above the bench does nothing for you. Keep heaters, grinders, chargers, and anything with a pilot light out of the space entirely, and have a fire extinguisher within arm's reach rather than across the shop.

Getting the Old Hose Off

Turn the fuel valve to the off position first, then drain the carburetor float bowl using the drain screw at the bottom of the bowl and its overflow tube, catching the fuel in your container. Remove the seat and the front fender or side panels needed to expose the tank outlet and the run of hose heading to the carburetor. Photograph the routing and every clip before anything comes loose.

Slide the clamps back along the hose rather than fighting them in place. Twist the hose gently on each barb to break the varnish bond that forms over years, then work it off straight. If it has bonded hard, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of levering on the fitting, because the valve spigot and carburetor inlet are easy to bend and expensive to be wrong about. Being a 4x4 chassis with independent rear suspension, this Grizzly carries extra front driveline hardware and frame crossmembers, so trace where the hose passes and note any clearance point you will need to duplicate.

Seating the New Line Without Fighting It

Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Extra length looks harmless but lets the hose sag into the frame, chafe on a crossmember, or drift toward exhaust heat. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry. Never use grease, oil, or silicone spray to ease it on — any lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep past the clamp. A quick dip of the hose end in hot water softens it enough to slide home on its own.

Position the fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting so they cannot walk off, and snug them evenly without crushing the wall. Return the hose to its original clips and keep it clear of steering components and the front drive. If the inline filter shows sediment or discoloration while you are in there, replace it now and mind the flow arrow.

Leak Check Before the First Ride

Open the fuel valve and leave the engine off for several minutes. Watch both joints closely and wipe them with a clean white rag — a faint amber stain is a leak even when nothing drips. With both ends dry, start the 350 and let it idle while you check again, since vibration and engine heat find seepage that a static test misses.

Finish by taking the machine for a short loop and inspecting once more with the tank full. Reinstall the plastics only after everything reads dry, and if the bogging that sent you here persists with a clean new hose, look next at the float bowl and jetting rather than the plumbing.
