Refreshing the Fuel Line on a 2011 Grizzly 350 2x4

A 2011 Grizzly 350 2x4 that suddenly acts starved for fuel or leaves a shiny spot on the shop floor is usually telling you the same thing: the hose between the tank and the carburetor has reached the end of its life. This is one of the least expensive repairs on the machine, and it goes quickly once you understand what you are looking at.
Tell-Tale Leaks and Lean Running
Owners typically notice one of two things. Either fuel is escaping, or the engine is not getting enough of it. The full symptom list looks like this:
- A puddle or damp patch on the ground under the quad after it has been sitting
- An unmistakable gasoline odor around the tank, sometimes without a visible drip
- Crazing, cracks, or a bleached chalky look on the hose, worst where it bends
- A hose that feels stiff and glassy, or one that has swelled soft at the fittings
- The engine bogging when you get into the throttle, hesitating on climbs, or surging lean at steady speed
- Dust caked into a ring at a barb, which is dried residue from slow seepage
Poor running with a clean-looking hose throws people off. Internal collapse or varnish buildup can restrict flow enough to starve the carburetor under load while the engine idles perfectly in the driveway.
Rubber Does Not Last Forever
Fuel hose is a wear item on a calendar, not an odometer. The compound depends on plasticizers for flexibility, and engine heat drives them out cycle by cycle until the hose behaves like rigid tubing. Once that happens, ordinary vibration turns hairline surface crazing into real cracks, usually at the tightest radius near the fuel valve. Dry, arid air accelerates the whole process by wicking moisture out of the hose wall.
Fuel does damage from the other side. Ethanol-blended gasoline attracts water and works on the inner liner, softening it and shedding fine material downstream. Any period where the 350 sat unused with fuel in the line compounds the issue, because the light components evaporate and leave gum and varnish behind. That deposit narrows the bore and cements the rubber to the barbs, which is why a decade-old hose often has to be cut off rather than pulled.
Petcock, Gravity, and a Float Bowl
This 350 is carbureted. The fuel valve mounts at the tank with ON, OFF, and reserve positions, one hose carries fuel down to the carburetor inlet under gravity alone, and the float bowl at the bottom of the carburetor has a drain screw for exactly this kind of maintenance. Nothing is pressurized, so there is no pump relay to pull and no need for line-clamping pliers to hold back fuel. Fuel-injected utility quads require both, along with occasional wrestling of a brittle plastic quick-connect coupler, so consider the simplicity here a genuine advantage.
The two-wheel-drive chassis keeps the run short and the access good. On four-wheel-drive Grizzly models the front differential and drive shaft occupy space beneath the tank and the hose picks up a slightly longer path with extra clearance points to navigate.
Getting Organized and Staying Safe
What to have ready:
- Replacement fuel-rated hose in the stock inside diameter
- Fresh clamps or clips, because reused spring clips no longer hold reliably
- Gloves and eye protection
- A sealed approved fuel container and a low drain pan
- Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, a razor knife, and rags
Give the gasoline real respect. Vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, exactly where a water heater pilot or a charging battery sits. Do the work outdoors, or with the overhead door fully open and every ignition source shut down. Pour drained fuel straight into a sealed can, never into a drain, and keep an extinguisher close enough to reach without stepping over the machine.
Off With the Old
Close the fuel valve first. Remove the seat and any panel in the way, put the pan under the carburetor, and open the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties through its overflow tube. Close the screw. At this point the hose contains almost nothing and you can work without a shower of fuel.
Retract the clamp at the carburetor inlet up the hose and out of the way. Twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond at the barb, then walk it off with even pressure. Hardened rubber that refuses to move should be slit lengthwise with the blade and peeled off, which keeps you from prying against a soft aluminum fitting. Repeat the process at the valve. With the hose out, inspect the valve screen for grit while it is exposed — that is your serviceable filter on a carbureted machine, in contrast to an injected quad where the filter lives inside the tank as part of the pump module.
On With the New, Nothing Slippery
Match the new hose to the old length before you cut, and cut square. Do not add slack: extra length sags into the frame, chafes on hard parts, or forms a high spot that can trap an air pocket in a gravity feed. Slide each end onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and do it dry. Leave grease, oil, and silicone entirely out of this — a lubricated fitting will not seal properly and vibration will slowly push the hose off. Soften stubborn new rubber in hot water for a few seconds instead.
Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten evenly, snug without cutting in. Return the hose to its original frame passage with a continuous downhill slope, then pull on both connections to verify they are locked in place.
Sign Off With a Careful Inspection
Open the fuel valve and watch for a full minute with a dry rag under each joint. Any trace of fuel means a fitting is not fully seated or a clamp needs another turn. Start the engine, let it idle while the bowl refills, then check both connections and the floor beneath the quad once more. Snap the throttle a few times and take a last look. When it stays dry through all of that, reinstall the seat and side panel, clean up, and dispose of the old hose and drained fuel properly. Your Grizzly 350 should now start easily and pull cleanly all the way to the top of the hill.
