Gasoline earns respect, and the smart move is dealing with that before a single clamp comes loose. Push the 2011 Big Bear 400 outside if the weather cooperates, and if it will not, raise the garage door from top to bottom instead of settling for an open window. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it flows downward and pools in a layer along the floor exactly where you will be crouched with an open fuel line in hand. Kill every ignition source in the space: water heater pilot lights, plug-in shop heaters, grinders, torches. Pull on nitrile or rubber gloves and keep them on for the whole job, because raw fuel strips the oils out of skin within seconds and carries whatever was dissolved in the tank right along with it.

How Fuel Reaches the Engine on This Machine

The 2011 Big Bear 400 is carbureted and gravity fed. A manual petcock at the tank governs flow, one rubber hose carries fuel down to the carburetor, and the float bowl meters it from there. Nothing is pressurized and there is no pump module inside the tank, which is why turning the petcock to off is complete isolation for this system. Fuel-injected quads take a very different path, since they have no petcock, hold pressure in the line, and require pulling the pump fuse and pinching the hose with clamping pliers before any fitting is touched. Your carburetor's float bowl drain screw is a bonus the injected setup does not offer.

What Makes Old Line Fail

Rubber hose has a service life measured in years rather than hours. Every heat cycle drives more plasticizer out of the wall, and once the material hardens, routine chassis vibration opens hairline cracks where the line bends. That process accelerates in dry regions, because arid air steadily removes moisture from the outer surface and stiffens it from the outside inward.

Ethanol-blended fuel handles the interior. Alcohol draws in water, and hose left full through a long inactive stretch gradually loses its liner to that mixture while collecting gum and varnish that reduce the bore and plug the petcock strainer. A hose can be quietly choking flow and shedding debris while presenting a perfectly acceptable exterior, which is why replacement on a machine of this age is preventive maintenance rather than a repair.

Symptoms That Justify the Swap

  • A gasoline puddle or dark damp patch beneath the engine after the quad sits
  • A fuel odor that clings to the machine even with the petcock shut
  • Fine cracking, chalky texture, or a stiff section that stays flattened after a pinch
  • Bogging under load, stumbling on hard throttle, or lean running that mimics an empty tank
  • A crusted dirt ring at either fitting from fuel seeping and drying over time

One bad section means the whole run is due, since the entire hose has aged at the same rate.

Parts and Tools Worth Having Ready

  • An approved fuel container and a shallow catch pan
  • Replacement line matched to the original inside diameter, cut long and trimmed to fit
  • New clamps — spring clips or miniature worm-gear clamps for both ends
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and a sharp razor knife
  • A short piece of clear tubing to direct float bowl drainage, plus plenty of rags

Old Line Out, New Line In

Close the petcock, lift the seat, and remove the bodywork blocking the tank outlet and the hose route to the carburetor. Slide the pan under the machine, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty into your container through the clear tube. Draining the low point first is the difference between a couple of drips and a real cleanup.

Back both clamps well clear of the barbs. Old rubber typically bonds itself to the fittings with dried varnish, so twist the hose to shear the seal rather than pulling straight against it. When a hose stays stubbornly attached, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away in pieces — prying risks cracking the petcock spigot or the carburetor inlet. Study the routing before the last end frees up, because this 4x4 threads its line past front driveline hardware and extra frame crossmembers that a two-wheel-drive Big Bear does not carry.

Cut the new hose to match the original length precisely. Extra rubber sags into the frame and wears through, while a short piece loads the fittings sideways until one pulls off. Push each end onto its barb past the raised bead and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all create a leak path under the clamp by leaving a film on the sealing surface, so keep every lubricant away and use a few seconds in hot water if the hose fights you. Fit the clamps just behind the bead at both ends, tighten evenly without deforming the wall, and clip the line back into its original guides, well away from exhaust heat and steering movement.

Making Sure It Does Not Weep

Tighten the float bowl drain screw and open the petcock. Because the feed is gravity driven, the line fills right away and any marginal joint will bead within the first minute. Wipe both fittings dry with a clean rag and look again, then start the engine and let it idle several minutes before a third inspection with the machine warm and vibrating. Only after all three checks come back dry should the panels go back on. And remember that on a carbureted Big Bear like this one, the filter screen sits inside the accessible petcock rather than inside the tank the way an injected model's pump filter does, so lingering lean symptoms after a clean install point straight at that screen and the carburetor jets.
